I could be wrong but I'm going for the city bypass when it was only from Wester Hailes to Fairmilehead. Occasion? At a guess something to do with the 70 Commy games when it was used for cycling.

The bypass wasnt built until the 80s. It was used for cycling in the 1986 Commonweath Games.

I love this thread. Not being from Edinburgh (Midlothian born and bread) I recognise quite a few of the places. Others I dont but once someone states where it is I do. Others, even with the name of the place I am none the wiser. Google maps helps to an extent but for some places they are unrecognisable.

The stories and personal stuff folk share I find fascinating.

Catching up on the thread is a great way to start Boxing Day. Thanks to all the contributors for keeping this amazing thread going.

When I lived in Clerwood Loan used to walk down to the Harp and have a five o'clock pint while the wife done her duty and fed the bairns. That was 1964 to 1966/67

Oh Sharpie that's going to cause angst amongst some of our posters.

Westburn. There used to be a subway under the road behind the end house in the bottom picture. The steps down to it are still there, but its been bricked up, and the end which is near the flats is below ground level now. It must have been in some state when they had that flooding.

Its funny how two men can be so opposite. Merrilees was too small really to qualify for the police but was a man of ambition desire. Jock on the other hand was a big man, had looked into a police career but when he was told that the police in those days  when arresting drunks had barrows they used to carry them to the jail, Jock who had a penchant for the amber liquid did not feel he could rightly do this. Jock had two life goals, where he would get his next pint, and his next stake for a bet at the bookies. His loving sister my mother often supplied both. So when Merrilees the wee man sat in his proud office, Jock the big man was  as he done most of his life still working on the railway tracks.  Thats life a it is lived.

South Bridge - 1930's

If it was raining, you could go in via the Chamber St door, walk through the store and come out on South Bridge, thus staying dry for at least 50 yards. Seemed worth it when l was 12

Any idea when they knocked down the block before the bridge?

I haven't but I'd imagine in the 60's as I can't recall seeing that block

This is from 1980.  I feel I should remember it, but can't.

I'm the same. Always got off the bus at Gorgie Road and I used to get taken to the South enclosure in the 70's and then I started going to the school end in the 80's via McLeod Street as well..

Bizarre how I can't remember that building like it was in that phot.

Really thinking about it now maybe I have a vague memory of it being demolished.

It's been mentioned on this thread that there was an ice rink at Haymarket just down from the station. It must have been out of this picture to the right past that restaurant and bar- is that correct ?

When I first moved to Edinburgh in 1981, I bought a Bartholomew street plan to help me get around. It showed the ice rink, but I never could find it.

It was there in 1981 ?!

I never even heard of it, let alone seen it ! Always went to Murrayfield. Didn't go often as I was gash at ice skating.

Judging by that map though it looks pretty well hidden from Haymarket Terrace

It was on the map, but I couldn't find it and nobody I asked knew about it. apparently it closed in 1978.

It is strange in the city there are a few views that look very similar.  First impressions with this one after a glance was looking north along Great Junction Street from near the foot of the Walk but it is Clerk Street, Newington and you can just see the Playhouse in the middle right.
