Thanks. Do you know if it’s looking north or south and what the date is?
My dad’s father was born in St Leonard’s St in 1879.

Photo dates from the 1920’s, does not mention the direction

That has to be Traquiar Road East looking up the hill to Pinkhill Station in the distance on the Corstorphine branch line. Another line killed off by Beeching in 1967. I was only 4 when it closed but know the area well

Yes, definitely Pinkhill Station, think we must be roughly the same age, born 1963

Where the guy is standing on left of pic ; wasn't there a knockin' shop/ massage parlour there at one time (I'm not suggesting you'd have any personal experience 😄).

Correct mate, May 63, a good year for Jambo births as I‘m sure @JohnFindlay would agree 👍

I’ve edited the post as I now doubt myself not having been there since I was 4 years old. And that was a bloody long time ago.

Found it. I was totally wrong. It’s St Raphael’s Hospital on Blackford Avenue. A private hospital founded by the Catholic Church. Never heard of it in my puff.

edit. It’s a care home now.

And the charlatans have glazed over those beautiful Art Deco balconies which is maybe why nobody recognised the photo.

I know even in the forties if we were going to Princes Street my mother always wore her best clothes, and my sister had her Gillespies blazer and hat, and I  had something fairly new from the Provident check no doubt.  I am sure it was that fashion sense that gained Edinburgh the old adage, " fur coat, nae drawers", no doubt coined by a Glaswegian.

Through the front door, turn right, walk along the bus, out the emergency exit at the back. Job done.
