The Official JKB What Was The Last Film You Watched...

Oblivion 2/10.

Tom cruise vehicle for screen time. Boring, plot full of holes, and when clones appear you truly realise how shit this is. Did not care if the hero lived or died. I will not watch another cruise film again.

Sadsack hobo of an actor.

Pacific Rim - 6/10.

Whoever compared it to Evangelion was spot on. Good action sequences, but there are some ropey accents, and the intended comic relief with the scientists falls flat on its arse. Looked really good in IMAX 3D

Takeshi's Tynecastle

Monsters University - good fun, though I probably got a lot more out of what is basically a frat house comedy than my 4yo did. He much preferred the original I think, and I can see why. But despite lacking originality or any real action, it was a lot of fun and looked great.

7/10

The Fast & The Furious

Also lacked originality, and the action sequences were surprisingly unexciting. Things went fast I suppose but there wasnt much fury. The whole film seemed so inconsequential it's amazing it has spawned a franchise. Not completely awful though, and I'm only really watching it to see 5 & 6 eventually. Hopefully before 7 comes out.

5/10

Hunger Games 6/10

I've seen the trailer for the next one and it looks ok so I thought I'd best watch this one first.

I don't know what type of audience it's aimed at but it was all right.

Final destination 5. 8/10.

Not really a horror anymore, not really scary, but the creativity in how someone will meet their doom is the thrill.

Heads mashed, eyeballs flying, they seem to have made this franchise have a humour factor like the original evil dead. Plenty 'ooya fooka' moments...and cleverly ties it in with the first one.

More please.

Took my lad to see Pacific Rim in 3D last night.

Absolutely loved it - Del Toro (IMO) has set the standard for over the top monster movies with it

8/10

[edit - the Australian son, it was bugging me where I'd seen him before, until I twigged that he was Sean in EastEnders... :D ]

The Lone Ranger - Most of the jokes fell flat, the story line was disjointed, and surprisingly violent for a kiddies film. The only thing that saved it was the excellent action scenes. 5/10

...a bit disco

The Purge (2013)

Not the worst movie ever but did have a feeling of being nothing more than an over long episode of The Twilight Zone.

The Girl Next Door.

I really should stop watching films like this... I'm still a bit sad when I think about it. Checked it out online afterwards to see how loosely it was based on a true story, and it seems that the only bit that wasn't true (names aside) was that the wee laddie David, wasn't there to help her, and she had to face all those horrors without help.

Really sad story. The removal of someone's dignity and how quickly someone can be turned from bright young thing to tortured broken shell.

Hard to rate it... It was horrible to watch, but anything that inspires any kind of emotion, must be very well made.

2/10

Post apocalypse (although you don't find out why) horror (although there are no zombies or vampires) that's shot in a sort of grey tone was a real waste of my time

I liked the bit when he found out Jack Bauer's daughter used to be a porn star and Seth Bullock from Deadwood was her pimp.

Oh, wait...

Is there another film with the same name?

Yeah, a teen comedy where a laddie falls in love with his next door neighbour, only to find out she is a porn star. Hilarity ensues. I think.

A couple of crossovers and similarities... But one or two glaringly harrowing differences. This was a pretty sad film. :(

We watched Forrest Gump afterwards to cheer ourselves up... That alone should tell its own story.

Enjoyed the film. Thought that without Depp as Tonto it would have been poorer.

The World's End - 6.5/10.

Ridiculous storyline but good humour throughout. Cast bounced off each other well and it was completely different from what I was expecting when it first started. Got a bit weird towards the end which knocks the mark down a bit.

Only God Forgives

Da *** did I just watch :cornette:

Visually stunning, stylish, intense, a ridiculous torture scene, some diabolical dialogue, a terrible ending

Can't rate it as I don't know if it was the worst movie I've ever watched or the best! Not one I'll forget in a hurry either way!

Just watched this. **** me :muggy:

Absolute shite. Pretentious, vacuous shite. The visuals are great, if overly-garish for the tone, but the Oedipus imagery is ham fisted, the hands theme running through it isn't half as clever as it wants to be, and a lot of the violence was fetishistic for the sake of it. Oh, and the ****ing karaoke bits :cornette:

Dredd - Didn't get round to seeing this in the cinema. Superb and the violence is good. Karl Urban makes a great Dredd.

Lawless - 7/10 - a lot better than the reviews I'd read had made out. It's nowhere near the standard of The Proposition, but Tom Hardy and Guy Pearce are outrageous in it, and I love the look and feel of the setting. Soundtrack is immense as well.

Django Unchained - 8/10 - another one where great performances elevate a film up a couple of marks. I'm not so keen on Tarantino's insistence that everything has to lead to graphic violence, and there is a bit in this where one of the cast does something completely out of character just to get to blood, but you can't argue with how it is put together. I probably slightly prefer Inglorious Basterds, but not by much.

Watched Cloud Atlas the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Worth a punt. 7.5/10...actually 8/10, just for the Scott Monument being in it.

Exactly the same for me. Feared the worst with Simon Pegg but he played the part well too.

I read your opinions on movies and they are like the polar negative of mine - every one the opposite, it seems. I thought, as mentioned on the last page, that it was an atrocious film with very little to redeem it.

Pacific Rim -5 - laughably bad, but entertaining in its way. I cannot believe that English scientist character ever made it past the first draft of the screenplay  At least 3 of those marks are purely because Stringer Bell is in it.

Trance - 6 - Usual Danny Boyle nonsense in the third act derails what was otherwise quite enjoyable daftness. One of those films that invites you to think about it after it is finished, but has so many holes and inconsistencies that it doesn't stand up to being analysed. Enjoyable though.

I don't agree with that either

I really wanted to enjoy Only God Forgives, for instance, as I am a fan of the director and Gosling. Hated it though. For me, sometimes it is the films that I want to enjoy that I end up hating the most. I am a pernickety **** though and wee things will get under my skin

The conjuring. Good old fashion creepy horror film, not as many jumpy bits as others such as sinister, insidious etc. based on a true story which is always at the back of your mind which creates a sense of feeling unsettled and slightly uneasy. 7.5/10

The Paperboy

8/10

This got 3 extra points purely due to Nicole Kidman. The 46 year old Australian / American actress gave me the serious horn throughout this film. She claims not to remember filming the sex scenes. Well I will remember the prison scene for a wee while! Sharon Stone, that's how you do it. Anyway the film itself was based in the deep south around 59, some great moments, loved the maid, and lots of WTF moments.

Pacific Rim 6/10

I this saw tonight in IMAX 3D and it's probably the best film I've seen in 3D, it uses the format properly and it actually enhances what is a ridiculously over the top romp of a film, in equal parts awesome and cheesy.

Hell, giant robots fighting massive aliens, what's not to like? Think Power Rangers meets Cloverfield, but in a good way.

I thought it was brilliant. Keeps you thinking all the way through, so much going on and the ending is so unexpected. Definitely makes you think a lot more about how magic tricks are done.
