In fairness a lot of hospitals take that attitude with smokers. My own mother was rushed to the ICU unit at the Western. The doctors initially refused to treat her as she was a smoker. The ward nurse pleaded my mothers case as my mother was a carer for my step-dad (Alzheimers) and led a normal active life. When me & sister got to the hospital we were told in no uncertain terms they would try supporting her for a few days then the breathing assistance would be removed and no resuscitation would be administered.
