It more refers to the idea (I don't think there's any concrete evidence to support it though) that when a brand goes "woke" it leads to substantial financial loss in the aftermath. Its a great novel and was already filmed magnificently by David Lean in the 1940s with the great Martita Hunt as Miss Havisham.
