Also 15k season tickets 5k more than Hibs and Aberdeen who have spent more cash on players.

Don't know what Aberdeen ended up with but Hibs sold around 11,700 season tickets in the end. Sure it was in the EEN (or similar) last week.

Our squad is better now than it was this time last year.

"Aw but ra injurries n that eh likesy..."

Yup, unfortunate but in truth Rowles we have cover, Beni, we have cover, Boyce we now have cover.  Could the squad do with another forward?  Yup!  Did the club find one we deemed good enough who would come to us?  Obv not, so we wait.  End of the world?  Not on yer effing nelly.

Halkett, Kingsley, Natty, Grant are obviously all minor injuries and didn't need factored in to contingency.

We have the 3rd best squad in Scotland.  We have minimum third best management team in Scotland (would you swap ours for anyone elses??).  We have the best exec team in Scotland and I'd argue that point with anyone.

We have perhaps the most torn faced, delusionally and mystifyingly overpriveleged supporters in world history (or certainly a noisy section within us).  Or perhaps we don't in comparison to other teams, but christ it doesn't half feel like it!!  And it's not just on here, it's at the games too.

Just get behind the bloody team.  And all the backroom staff who got us back to third at a canter, with a squad better than anything we've had in well over 10 years and the rest of the rest looking up at us trying to grab our coat tails.

Moaning idiots.

We signed 8 players.  Yeah we'd have liked another attacking player (who we may yet still sign) but we've said all along we won't "do a Levein" and sign players for the sake of it, if we can't get our targets we move on and make do if need be.  We did it at the start of last season at RB where we really lacked and up front where we only had Boyce and Gnando.  Remind me where we were come the Jan window.  Oh aye, miles ahead of the pack having been pretty tight to the OF for most of that.

Rant done.

Have some faith.

Or piss off.

There is nothing to add to that. Brillant post.

Central midfield was one of the three positions we'd been explicitly targeting since Shankland signed.

I’m not sure it was another DM though. I think the other two positions were significantly more important

Neilson is saying that Halkett, Kingsley and Grant are all back tomorrow. Humphrys also available and hoping Kio visa is through.

The only certain injuries we have are Beni, Boyce and Rowles. There was no clarity over Atkinson nor whether Smith and Neilson are ok after appearing to take knocks on Wednesday but this "bare bones" stuff will not wash. We have plenty players available who should be good enough to win at Livingston tomorrow.

Is it just me... but h1b5, shelick, sevco etc. all seem to sail through 'visa' hurdles where we seem to have issues? Perhaps just looking at this through maroon specs, but nobody else seems to have to wait like us 🤷‍♂️... happy to be put right/corrected.

Very good.

Either a Hibs fan or an absolute idiot. We've paid substantial fees for multiple players and you're raving on here about missing funds?? Lack of intelligence or ulterior motive...

YASSSS Roy. Outstanding post 👍

I'm disappointed we never signed anyone, but purely from a selfish point of view because its exciting and I wanted us to be part of the deadline day drama. Our squad is good enough to finish 3rd again. We strolled it last season and have made some considerable improvements including only having one player on loan (compared to having four last year). Every other player we have is ours - our assets - so if we improve them and sell them on, the money is ours not someone else's.

I think next year is where we really see the difference - once we actually have the money from playing in Europe and once we know how much that is actually going to be - instead of borrowing and spending against future income.

Great point.  I'm disappointed too but as you say, it's like an almost childish type of disa - I wanted an exciting Korean or Brazilian or an EPL wonderkid on loan, a bit of excitement.

I don't go flinging my shite around cos I didn't get it though!!!

I'm pretty glad the club is sensible these days.  And I think these solid fondations and a solid, steady squad (remember all the key players who re-signed last year?) might just allow that bit of excitement in future windows.

And you know what, while I'm here.  Do you know why it doesn't matter that we didn't sign anyone?  And do you know why we have the best non-OF squad in Scotland?  It's because our recruitment success has been exceptionally high.  People are on Toby's back, there are some questions over Natty, but our success rate in the transfer market has been waaaaay higher than we should rightly expect.

Questions have to be asked, the money had to have gone some where.

Your munching your way through your nappies at some rate...

What questions have to be asked? Seriously what questions would you like to ask.

Think about how stupid asking the question of where the £3 million in ticket sales from the 4 European home games has gone... if you want a clue it is ****ing stupid as we haven't got it yet.

We have signed 8 players Rowles, Cochrane, Shankland, Orestis, Forrest, Grant, Neilson on permanent deals and Humphrys on loan.

How many players do you think we should have signed? What players from H1b5 would you have liked us to sign? Or Aberdeen or anyone else in our league, apart from the bigot twins who we can't compete financially with?

This has been a good window for us, quality over quantity. We can't go out and sign a new player every time someone gets injured and has been widely pointed out on this thread we signed Kingsley and McKay after the window closed last year and they have been arguably our best players.

The amount of absolute shite spouted on here is incredible at times.

What promises?

What investment, what promises?

This place is a hoot at times

people taking everything Neilson or Savage says as fact

do these people go through life accepting everything people say to them as fact ?

everyone embellishes the truth from time to time, especially people in football.

They will only ever tell you want what they want you to know or what they believe you need to know

If any football manager told me it was raining I’d look outside to check

Stop being so gullible, it’s all just football banter

HeartsandonlyHearts

Personally I’m going to wait a wee bit before jumping in the deep end. Maybe I’m just not cut out for this football fan thingy. Surely some of the drama on here is pure attention seeking?

So called Hearts fans on here seriously believe we’re worse of now than how we ended last season. That has to be a wind up.

I’ve come to the conclusion some of you think that this season is just going to be like last season. That’s the only logical reasoning to ascertain why people think a slight improvement in squad overall level is going to get us through the season. Must be discounting the extra games at a higher level and fixture congestion. Not to mention other teams won’t be as bad as they were last season.

Last nights disappointment in part stems from the chat that’s been coming from both Neilson and Savage for the past month,  a lot of lip service about wanting 2/3 quality additions before the window closes,  and wanting to be running with a squad 3/4 bigger than last season,  and other than the signing of Kio we haven’t signed anyone in the key positions both Neilson and Savage have spoke at length about on August (and Kio wasn’t one of those key positions)

If this had been a regular season transfer window I think most would have to agree it had been a pretty good one, however with European football and the need to increase both quality and the squad size I think the disappointment felt by many is just.

As long as we are still in touch of third by the time we break away for the World Cup I think we’ll be ok,  that 4/5 weeks off could be a blessing for us.

Agreed.

I know we haven't received the ECL money yet, but we have had the money for the Cup Final, the Hickey sell-on, record ST sales and the first 4 ECL home games.

I was expecting more from the transfer window than we ended up with tbh.

In saying that, I reckon Humphrys will do well for us.

I’m not sure it was another DM though. I think the other two positions were significantly more important

It clearly was given that we like to have two ball-winners in the middle and took Davenport on trial in the first week of August. You can argue about what's more important, but bringing in a CM was crucial. Haring is back-up level and Devlin can't play 90 minutes twice a week.

Is it just me... but h1b5, shelick, sevco etc. all seem to sail through 'visa' hurdles where we seem to have issues? Perhaps just looking at this through maroon specs, but nobody else seems to have to wait like us 🤷‍♂️... happy to be put right/corrected.

When did Hibs last sail through the visa issue?

The sense of entitlement/detachment from reality of some Hearts fans the last 24 hours has been nothing short of outstanding! "We wur promised whelms"

People saying Savage failed, insinuating that the board aren't backing the team, that we are withholding funds etc..

Let's just ask an honest question, if Savage and Robbie have been "aiming high" then, in all likelihood, there may be players we have approached that were just out of our reach. Say you have a short list and a long list, say your top target is our of reach financially and your 2nd target is not obtainable right now (but may be later) how far down the list is it acceptable to go, just to get some "bodies in the squad"? This was the Levein method, just grab whoever was available and we ended up with dead wood.

Do you settle for player number 8 on the long list because that's all that's available or do you keep the money aside in the hope that someone of quality comes up, or wait 6 months for one of your top targets to become available?

As I said before my interpretation of the "being more aggressive" quote is less about panic buying and more to do with giving a "take it or leave it, we will move on" final offer on the table.

What is making transfers more difficult at all levels is the upcoming world cup, there tends to be quieter transfer windows in the lead up to a world cup and it goes batshit mental afterwards. Players may be wary of moving now and not making world cup squads, or shortselling their value if they catch the eye. Take the Korean lad for example, had a tough time in Europe but still desperate to get back, having a very good season and could have an eye on breaking into the Korean team, if he comes to Scotland and fails to settle his chance may go, stay in Korea and he goes to the world cup his value may rocket....I get that not all of the targets we have will be international players, but the guys their current clubs are looking to upgrade to may be, which leaves them stuck.

There will be quality available in the free agent market, the whole recruitment team will be working hard and there will almost definitely be irons in the fire already

Glad he was though.

We only play 16 Scottish Premiership games before the World Cup. Imagine how strong we will be for the 2nd half of the league campaign!

So no far of a full strength starting 11 apart from the long term injuries

Hardly the bare bones Neilson keeps going on about

Yeah, I was hoping for an exciting exotic player. But the crucial thing is the recruitment team has been looking for players that suit us and are affordable. And I said this earlier in the thread but its worth stating, there is not one player we have signed this window where I have (from seeing them play or on paper) thought that that is anything other than a good signing. Considering that is 8 players in, its pretty good.

I think the problem is that we got carried away at the end of last season thinking of all the big signings we would make. I was as guilty of this as everyone else, I thought we would make 2 or 3 big signings, next level. I think that has carried on into peoples minds, people having a go that we must not care about Europe as we not made big speculative signings. I think it has been missed that for all the talk of the money we would get for being Europe, the TV money doesn't come until after this window, most of the ticket and hospitality money will be after the window. We could spend now, expecting that money later, but its part of prudent long term control not to do that(which I know doesn't excite fans.)

I do agree with you that we have the best non-OF squad in the country, and had it not been for 30 seconds against Hibs, we would be sitting with 12 points out of 15, having only lost to Celtic at Celtic Park, after a difficult European away game where despite being 1-0 down early on, we pushed them till the end, only conceeding a second goal after 2 red cards. Get a win at the weekend and it continues a strong start.

Hibs don't currently have a single player that I wish we had, which is a strange feeling because normally they have at least one or two who sort of make you nervous.

Aberdeen look like our main rivals this year but even then they have maybe two players I would quite like (Miovski and the lad on loan from Boro). I wouldn't trade our equivalents (Shankland and Cochrane/Kingsley) for them though.

Presumably being Scottish helps?

You can have dual citizenship. Ryan McGowan is similar, born in Australia but has Scottish parents so I don't think he needed a visa to sign for St. Johnstone.

:vrface:honestly didn't know that!

...we just seem to get a player then have to wait weeks on getting them through the red tape. Devlin, Rowles, Kio... maybe I'm just not paying attention to other clubs that have to wait similar time lengths 🤷‍♂️

Think it's a big week ahead. We should really be looking at 2 league wins against Livingston and St Mirren which would, I suspect, push us further clear in 3rd and see a points total of 16 out of 21 which would represent an excellent start (injury time at Easter Read apart). It's noticeable that after next weeks home matches v Istanbul and St Mirren our next 4 league games post Europe see away games which may prove tough (Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen and Ross County) so it's an opportunity to put points on the board. Additionally it's arguable that the Istanbul game on Thursday may well be the most pivotal in respect to any chance of 2nd place and I think Robbie will likely know that. It seems fairly certain that any points picked up v Fiorentina will be a bonus to us or Istanbul and frankly Riga should lose all 6 matches so the 2 games v Istanbul will likely determine any chance of a play off spot in the new year. So yeah, big big week coming up and plenty to look forward too.

Rowles > Moore - Paid money and bought him.  Unlucky about the injury

This seasons Cochrane > last seasons Cochrane - Paid money for him.  Already looking like a great buy and improving all the time.

Forrest > Woodburn - Free transfer but already done more than Woodburn in his whole time with us.  Will win us games this year

Shankland - Paid money for him and is the kind of striker we have been moaning about for years.   Go check the Shankland thread.

Kio - Paid money for him.   Unknown quantity at the moment, but looks like a bigger version of Cammy, which can only be a very, very good thing.

Grant - Paid money for him.   Looks like he could be the attacking midfielder we need to open defences.  Time will tell.

Lewis Nielson - Free transfer - highly thought of youngster who looks like he will settle in fine.  MOTM last week.

Humphrys - Loan - No idea how he will be - but certainly a better option than GMS.

We can still sign players even after the reg cut off for ECL tonight.  Just like last year when we brought in Mackay.

Could we have signed anyone else?  No idea.  Nobody knows what players/agents were asking for.  I guess we will see in the next few days/weeks.

Would Robbie like more decent quality players?  Always.  If he didn't, he wouldn't be doing his job.

Hibs only actually good signing had to retire from the Scotland National team as he knew he was miles off our no.1. Absolute diddies.

Maybe we need to realise that Europe can’t be a priority this season and manage our team accordingly now?

We may be short in a couple of spaces but we’ve got a big squad that’s more than capable of finishing 3rd again.

You say we haven’t invested in the squad to achieve this but I think we’ve probably just had one of our highest spending transfer windows in years.

I mean before it kicked off we would have all wanted signings like Rowles and Shankland. I doubt anybody would’ve been overly gutted about Kio and Humphrys.

For me I’m most disappointed not to have strengthened at the back but not enough to descend to the level of concern in this thread. It’s a bit hysterical (not your response to me just the thread in general).

I don't think our performance in Europe is a priority however what is a priority is that we qualify for Europe regularly. Other than the old firm any Scottish clubs who have been in Europe have struggled with the weekend midweek weekend schedule. And we are no different.  If we want to finish third we need to have a squad that can achieve this. As I said earlier in terms of quality I think we've improved but I'm not sure we've got enough players in. We saw on Wednesday how with some injuries we struggled against a team, at home, who had been one if the favourites to be relegated. If we expect to be third then we need to have a squad that can handle this extra workload. So I'm hoping that we pick up at least a couple more players in the next few days. We're still short up front. An injury to Shankland would leave us in a bad way. We're already short at the back just now and we're hoping to get Halkett and Kingsley back ASAP to rectify that.

Lord Beni of Gorgie

Humphrys looks a good replacement for Boyce from the vids. Maybe a little cumbersome and touch not always there, but powerful, opens his body up well and has a decent strike, not bad as an emergency
