When is this stalemate gong to end.

When Ukraine runs out of ammo.

OR when Russia runs out of men and machines.

The territorial gains may be static or moving very slowly, but the action is hotter than ever before after almost two years of war.

Russia is taking appalling casualties and machinery losses but those in charge seem to not care.

They're happy to expend those lives and that machinery until Ukraine runs out of ammo and has to withdraw.

Both sides have not changed their strategic goals.

Russia still maintains that Ukraine doesn't really exist and is merely a renegade Russian region that has been illegally occupied by The West since 1991.

Ukraine still maintains that it will regain all lost territory, including Crimea.

Wonder what the liklihood is of the Russian people rising up against the government? These losses must be devastating households all over Russia.

Not yet.

Most of the conscripts have been from the far-flung ethnic minority regions, foreign mercenaries or prisoners.

Even immigrant workers have been press-ganged into the army under threat of having their visas cancelled and deported back home.

So far the white Russian population has barely been scratched.

But they're running out of ethnic minorities and prisoners and immigrants.

When they finally have to start conscripting white Russians from the big cities in western Russia, that's when the internal pressure will start to tell.

Far-right bams in Romania are claiming 4 Ukrainian regions if Russia wins the war.

Including the one that Hungary already called dibs on.

Maybes all those Putin backed twats should just go to war with each other and save us the bother of sorting them out.

Kuwait is reportedly sending 100 of their upgraded T-72s (re-named M84) to Croatia for refurbishment, then on to Ukraine.

The M84 is a Yugoslav upgrade of the T-72, which is why Croatia is doing the refurb, as they built them in the first place.

Kuwait ordered a couple of hundred of these but only 150 were delivered before the break up of Yugoslavia stopped the supply.

In other news, Ukraine has shot down yet another SU-34 fighter/bomber, this time over in the Luhansk region.

They've also further consolidated their bridgehead over the Dnieper in the Kherson region.

Oh, and Russia is still losing somewhere in the region of 1,000 men, 10 tanks, a couple of dozen fighting vehicles and artillery pieces every single day.

But that more or less goes without saying at the moment.

Can’t imagine how grim it is on the inside of this. The next counter offensive won’t work either but in reality, what option do they have? Either keep fighting or surrender. Grim choice

Putin now talking about "moving the demilitarised zone so far away from the territory of the Russian Federation (i.e. the illegally annexed land) that it is out of reach of Western weapons"

So, erm, considering that ATACMS and the newly delivered gliding bombs (not to mention drones) can already hit deep into Russia, including Moscow, where exactly is he trying to draw the front line of this new mythical "demilitarized zone"?

The Atlantic ocean?

And talking of the new gliding bombs, they will add much needed range and extreme accuracy to the already highly capable Ukrainian air force.

And, as a reminder, they've not even (officially) launched strikes with their new F-16s yet.

They've had other gliding bomb kits for a while, but those were just a set of wings that attaches to a regular air dropped bomb, to extend the range of it.

These new ones are custom designed munitions. A different ball game.

Tell you what, China must be laughing their arses off this is still rumbling on.The west has no real option but to back Ukraine and it’s draining us dry now with the Middle East kicking off we will be even thinner.

As much as I detest defensive spending, every time I see the numbers being spent I think of hospitals and schools.

Unfortunately, I think we as an Island need to massively invest. We are no longer super powers but let’s make this Island a little safer, a little better protected and let’s try and make all the ships and planes we will need in this country, at least get some ship yards open and redirect some of the funds to our dying industrial cities

If we must spend money on evil please let some byproduct of the spend do some good.

€50 billion package for Ukraine approved by the EU after Hungary's wannabe dictator Orban backed down.

I don’t get Orban. He doesn’t seem to like the EU, but won’t leave. He appears to want to be inside the tent, but quite happy to pish all over everyone’s trousers. It’d be interesting to see whether or not he’s funded by Putin.

I'm not sure Putin could afford him.

Hungary's economy is highly dependent on its membership of the EU.  Orbán is a hypernationalist who wants all of the financial benefits of EU membership but who doesn't agree with its fundamentally international nature or its liberal democratic values.  He's a fan of Putin and of the old authoritarian Commie way of doing business.  But as well as that, he reflects a view which is prevalent in Hungary that Ukraine isn't their friend, and that the EU spending billions on Ukraine is not in Hungary's national interest.  I'm not saying that's a correct view, but I can see why they think that way.

There's a few heads in Eastern Europe being turned.

Hungary is the most vocal.

Slovakia's new PM is a pro-Russian bam but popular protests against him are growing.

Serbia is leaning pro-Russia. But then they've always been the bammiest bams in that region anyways.

Romanian far-right parties are supporting Russia and claiming bits of Ukraine as theirs.

Turkey continues to play both sides; this week it's sold more air defence systems to the Russians.

Whether hitching their wagons to a rapidly fading former Superpower who has fallen to a World power and in danger of falling further to a Regional power is a good idea or not will only be proven by time.

In other news, the BRICS trade bloc (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) has welcomed 5 new members this week; Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Argentina said no ta.

Back to the bad old days of the global south-east and north-west forming rival blocs.

The West has the money, the technology and the political clout; the East has the people and the raw resources.

Another sea drone video

Russia must be top dog when it comes to being the thickest alleged super power. Putin and his generals must realise, if they hold on to the Dombas and Crimea, these successful drone attacks will just keep on coming. No doubt we'll see a shiny picture of that missile launcher in its heyday. What an utter waste of human life.

Drones are pretty much 100% Ukrainian. Don't need US money. Not sure if that is partly the point Ukraine are making.

Ukraine is developing lots of different kinds of drone, both aerial and naval.

Some of the naval ones are large enough to carry anti-ship missiles so they're more like mobile missile batteries than kamikaze drones, and can be re-armed and sent back out.

Some of them are submersible, like ultra long range self guided torpedoes.

The aerial ones are very interesting too.

As well as the First Person View kamikaze ones and other wee ones that drop grenades they've been using to great effect, they now have much larger ones that can drop much bigger warheads and take out tanks via a top armour attack.

Also in development are bigger ones mounting machine guns. Dropping grenades on individual Russian soldiers is fairly common but you have to sneak up on them to get close enough.

Bigger, machine gun toting one will be able to hit from much further out.

Also mothership drones which can carry a squadron of 6-8 smaller drones on board, to extend their range.

It's a fast-moving technology and warfare is being changed before our very eyes.

Seems that yet another Russian Lieutenant General was killed during the various strikes on Crimean airbases.

On the Avdiivka front, the Russians are being held on the flanks so now they're trying to brute-force their way into the town from the south-east, through the already destroyed industrial area.

This has been the front line since 2014 so Ukraine is well prepared.

However, the Russians almost did something intelligent.
They found a big (1metre diameter) pipe that used to supply one of the factories in the industrial district and sent scouting patrols through it to see where it went. Where it went was behind the triple-layered Ukrainian defence lines.

So they then sent a 150-man strong assault force through the pipe. Ukraine was taken by surprise and withdrew from the main defence lines to avoid being outflanked.

The Russians then launched a strong convoy along the main road hoping to link up with the surprise attack force.

But Ukraine quickly realised what the Russian plan was, smashed the convoy, re-entered the main defence lines and attacked the surrounded Russian advance units from all sides with Bradleys and tanks.

The pipeline has been blocked with explosives and a detailed survey is being done of all the other major factories in the zone.

To the south-west of Bakhmut, Klischiivka is seeing movement in both directions as the Russians try to force Ukraine back out of the town which they liberated towards the end of last year.

I want to post a video I have already just posted in the US politics thread, I want any of you who follow this thread but not the US politics thread to see this.

You may or may not have heard that an American called Tucker Carlson who I will refer to from here on in as piece of shit is going to be the first western piece of shit to interview Putin since the invasion of Ukraine.

Western journalists have requested an interview, the BBC has asked many times, Putin always declined. But he will speak to this piece of shit because this piece of shit will take his side 100%

We all know what Putin will say, poor me, to steal a Trump line, "I did nothing wrong" This piece of shit is going to support anything Putin says, and will side with him in justifying it. He will be drooling like a fan boy, as Trump does in the presence of Putin.

"why does everybody think Putin is so bad" Carlson asks.

Presumably all the rape/torture/murder/looting/ in Ukraine is just high jinks.

The video is set to start when they begin their segment about Carlson. Prior to that they were discussing the transformation of the Republican party from Russia hawks to Putin fan boys.

Strike on an apartment block in Kyiv being reported. Made me wonder if they might try to put on a show so to speak when he's being interviewed by the piece of shit. It's bound to be in Moscow, I hope the Ukrainians can stage something big exactly when it's happening.

I like to hear a Russian perspective and for obvious reasons that can usually only come from a Russian outside Russia, as this guy is. Funny thing about his channel I have never seen before.

The video you posted isn't showing on his channel. On the video it says it was posted 2 days ago, while on his channel his latest video was 3 weeks ago, and there is no sign of this video on his channel.

I agree but I’m not sure I’d be that boastful of previous leaders in the UK and US.

There’s a wonderful documentary on BBC iPlayer called Putin and the west. It goes into detail how Putin when first chosen by Yeltsin to lead felt he could have better relations with the West and the US most importantly. We failed to understand that whilst at the time Russia was recovering from the collapse of communism its leaders still saw itself as an important power in world affairs.

Whether we like it or not the expansion of NATO is seen as threatening to Russia and the geopolitical games being played means Ukraine has become a pawn in these games.

Hopefully there is a chance when Putin goes to talk and bring Russia into the fold.

Peskov the main Putin spokesman has confirmed today that Western media has made many requests to interview Putin but they consider them biased against Russia so have refused.
