I don't think it explains 'why', to be honest. It seems to be blind faith. Good luck to them, and hope they're right.

"They know that Russia can’t win a war that is costing it 1,000 deaths a day. They know that Putin’s regime is far weaker than it seems. Finally, Ukrainians also know that, to win, they need only to outlast the Russians — which they know they can, not because of some magical belief in resilience and victory, but because the alternative to outlasting the Russians is being exterminated by the Russians."

Why are so many getting shot down recently? @Cade They've had Patriots for ages.

Class of 75

Just seen the stats. Russia has lost 84% of pre war military personnel. They have lost 315,000 in Ukraine. Unbelievable, yet still this clown is in power.

Might be those jet thingamabobbys they were getting they’ve now got them with decent air to air missiles.  I mean it’s is (was) all over the news about Ukrainian getting a handful of these……the jets issue has gone quiet now, why would you shout it from the rooftops.  Not itk, just a guess.

Ukraine are getting better equipment basically air defence not all publicised and maybe getting better at using it and better intelligence. But Russia is mounting more air attacks to support its ground attacks. So there is another side to this story.

That feels like wishful thinking and hope rather than anything concrete. Hopefully it translates into victory, in some shape or form. This isn't going to end like anyone hopes, I'd predict.

The point is that those who are living through the war are more optimistic than us watching on the sidelines. Many Ukrainians lived through the Soviet era and know Russia well. They are better placed to judge than us.

It's very hard to say.

Officially they only have 3 Patriot systems.

1 is protecting Kyiv.

The other 2 are somewhere else.

Germany has said it'll send a more mobile version of Patriot, so this could be an answer.

Or it could be that without the AWACs support, the Russian air force is lacking early warning of incoming anti-air missiles.

Or it could be F-16s already in the air in Ukraine, but this is the least likely reason.

It could be that the Russians are running out of artillery pieces (due to lack of barrels) and having to use air support in the artillery role, exposing them to more anti aircraft fire.

Or just that they're flying more missions right now in order to give Putin's election chances a boost (as if he needs that).

Or it could be that Ukraine have come up with another clever tactic to bring the Russian jets into a kill zone.

Pick yer poison.

On the matter of Ukrainian optimism mentioned above, one reason is what Ukrainians are doing themselves.

This programme has some foreign intelligence help,  something the Trump Maga caucus won't be able to stop. But this is an internal Ukrainian programme developed by Ukrainians using Ukrainian materials and knowledge.

So you can understand some optimism and positivity.

Leaked Russian military documents signal Putin’s ‘desperation’ | General Philip Breedlove

“This is a clear indication that Russia has known all along that they had limitations on their conventional capabilities.”

The leaked Russian military documents outlining the Kremlin’s plans to use tactical nuclear weapons are a sign of Putin’s weakness, says General Philip Breedlove, Former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO.

Just another Russian ship undertaking a Special Underwater Operation.

This was one of their brand new ships too, at the cutting edge of what Russia can produce. Only 4 in service with another 2 still under construction.

Well, 3 in service now........

You do realise that Russia won't lose this war and a negotiated settlement will eventually be found.

Don't see the reason to celebrate anyone dying, on either side, when it's a game being played by people who are nowhere near conflict.

If they haven't taken over all of Ukraine then they will not have achieved their objective whilst decimating their own mililtary. I'm not sure it's a win either.

These Russian ships are involved in the killing of Ukrainian civilians.

So yes its brilliant they are being destroyed. Of course its sad for the very many dead  individuals and their families. However the Russian Government has an easy way of preventing that.

You must also agree its dreadfully sad for example the death of any Hamas fighter. Guess you're saying that too on the other thread. Though again another example that could be avoided.

Russia has re-affirmed its goals of totally dismantling Ukraine.

Medvedev even had a big map up showing what their version of a "negotiated settlement" looks like.
Ukraine is reduced to only the Kyiv oblast.
Poland and Romania get the western Oblasts.
Russia takes everything else, including the Transnistria part of Moldova.

This is their idea of peace.

Feck that.
Give Ukraine everything it needs to stop the Russians.

However long it takes.
We do not want to see the USSR rebuilt and a new decades-long Cold War which will cost untold trillions and put world peace at risk.
They must be broken here.

I don't think anyone will win. All I said was they won't lose and a negotiated settlement will take place. Both sides will then spin outcome to suit their agendas.

Of course it's a tragedy for any family of someone who dies. Must be worst feeling in world to bury a child.

Trouble is, governments, that means US, Israeli, Hamas, Russia or whoever, don't give a toss and will happily send them to their deaths if they get what they want.

Majority of people want peace but they aren't ones in charge.

I think the sea and air drone thing is an absolute masterclass by Ukraine (and anyone else shipping these into Ukraine).  I’d imagine before Russia invaded these items of technology were well into their trial period of procurement and production but not on a huge scale.  Ukraine then had an opportunity to put these on the front line (whilst the tec companies watched on).  This has resulted in a master stroke of success although maybe a bit patchy at first, Ukraine now will be viewed as experts in this field and drone use by western countries will be on a massive scale up.

Russias response….clueless really, this is something that has undone them on a grand scale and will continue to do so.  I’m actually sure there is not one single piece of “top” military equipment the Russians have that has been successful for them……..NATO would go through that lot in about a week.

Russia has also stated that their new generation T-14 Armata main battle tanks will no longer be deployed to Ukraine.

The reason given is that they're too expensive to replace in comparison to T-90s.

So Ukraine have scared them off.

Russia will still roll them out for propaganda purposes but if they're too expensive to replace on the battlefield then what's the point of them?

Russia has actually managed to destroy a HIMARS system, for real this time.

This comes after two years of many, many bogus claims from the Ivans.

Wonder how many Russian vehicles, artillery pieces and soldiers this thing took out since it arrived in Ukraine.

In other HIMARS news, one of them took out three of Russia's largest rocket artillery systems about 30km behind the lines.

Just coincidence but, on the news last night, the navy were showing off their latest unmanned vessel capable of search & rescue, patrol and of course combat.

Deliberate assassination attempt or not, but a Russian missile hit Odesa yesterday, landing only a few hundred metres away from a motorcade taking President Zelenksy to a meeting with a Greek diplomat.

Looks like Russia finally managed to track down and take out a Patriot system (2x launch vehicles, at least dunno about the command centre and radar trucks)

This was over on the Donetsk front, so it now seems likely that it was this system that had been shooting down all those expensive Russian planes over the last month.

Ukraine only had 3 Patriot systems. 1 is stationed in Kyiv and will stay there.

The other 2 had been used in a more mobile role, moving around every few weeks.

Seems that this time they didn't move it for too long and gave the Russians enough time to find it.

The Russians originally said it was an S200 system, so even they didn't think it was a Patriot, at first.

People then looked at the images and found evidence that it was Patriot launchers, based on things like shapes of doors and wheels (nerds being nerds).

We'll just have to wait and see. Ukraine ain't saying anything.

Same boys that invaded Belgorod last year.

Doing it again, in Kursk too, along three lines of attack.

If nothing else, it should take some pressure off the front lines, which are stabilising now just before the spring mud season turns eastern Ukraine into a swamp.

Russia's oil refineries and power plants took a pasting from fleets of Ukrainian drones over the last day or two as well, brownouts and blackouts being reported.

Ukraine also bombed a medium sized oil tanker that had been beached ages ago  on the Dnieper delta and was apparently being used as a forward command post by the Russians.

Hints being dropped that a major operation in Crimea is coming, maybes they'll get that bridge down yet!
