Whilst it's obvious what the commentator meant, I still found it amusing.

As the American lad successfully completed a pole vault: "..and he's the tallest competitor in the competition...5 metres 87..."

That was a cracking race. Shame for Reekie, thought she ran a great race also.

did i hear right that 7 out of the 8 ran PBs? also the winning time was the 4th fastest ever and hodgkinsons was the 8th fastest ever? if so that is how a final should be

Think so. Bear in mind the women's 800m world record is one oldest/most disputed. 🤣

Is that not to do with the latest shoe technology?

There's some sort of carbon plate that makes them more 'bouncy' so everyone is breaking personal bests at the moment.

Disappointed for Reekie. She maybe went a little too early but risked it to try and win. I find it difficult to like the Hodgkinson lass. Something about her just doesn't go down well with me.

Winner only 19 so Hodgkinson will have her as rival for career. Tough gig.

Is that the Nike shoe Laura Muir was using?

We saw the person today who will finally beat Joyner's 200 metre record by Paris 2024. Christine Mboma.

There was a documentary on the Nike Oregon project that went into this. Shoe came in about 1mm under new rule limit, supposedly by coincidence, but no-one believes that.

Records being broken all over place but technology playing more and more of a part.

Very few records broken without the Nike shoe. Almost makes you hanker for days when the cheating was done by injection.

Nike were first, but others have developed similar shoes too. It's a big leap forward with, some reports saying the shoes can improve energy efficiency by 4%.

I'm glad Laura Muir has them.

already happened with the danes and possibly something in it since they did not ride their last race with the tape on each members shins

Just reading the full reports. The other new equipment the Danes used in 1st round was under shirts for help with aero dynamics.

The rules say if you use new equipment you are disqualified. The cycling body didn't apply their own rules. Bad taste left with other teams. Probably happy to see someone that can beat the Brits but loads of other teams also complained.

I think a big part of the annoyance is the amount of work you have to do to make sure you don't break the rules. Then Danes just did what they wanted.

There's a lot of jealousy in cycling over GB perceived superiority in recent years, especially from cycling authorities. They've changed rules and dropped races, just to stop GB winning medals.

The Dutch men and German women caught and overtook GB fair and square and deserve congratulations.

Danes cheated and cycling authorities shat themselves. If it had been GB that infringed, they would have been all over it

The Australians were the dominant country in track cycling, before GB started to get a team together in the early 200s.  Chris Hoy was one of the first, then Rob Hayles, Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Victoria Pendleton joined the squad and they started to win medals.

It was probably only when Sky and Dave Brailsford got involved, maybe 12 years ago, did they start getting seriously involved with the technology side of cycling.  They looked for every incremental improvement, as they do in F1, re aerodynamics both of the bikes and the riders and GB became the dominant country for a decade.  Other countries have now caught up on the technology while GB's talent pool is showing signs of waning.

Developing technology is fine. Developing talent is fine. Germany and Netherlands did just that. Danes cheated though as they used technology that was outside rules. Denmark know they cheated, cycling authorities know Denmark cheated and every other country competing know Denmark cheated. Cycling authorities bottled it in desperation to stop GB.

Silver for Whittaker at light Heavyweight in the boxing. The Cuban deserved Gold as he outpunched Whittaker in all the three rounds.

And cycling authorities again have it on for GB. Female rider Kate Marchant relegated from her race for minor technical offence after easily winning heat.

Meanwhile Danes run into GB rider causing crash and then scream abuse at guy on floor, despite it being their own fault and no action taken.

Danes then wear illegal gear, bit no action taken.

Pretty obvious bias.

A few good finals today.

Laura Muir in the 1500m SF

Is there a dedicated Athletics channel anywhere. Sick of BBC chopping about and changing channels.

Local tines obviously  deduct 8 hrs

Over the years the Olympics has mostly been criticised for decisions on new sports.

But actually they've done well this time.

Used to live just round the corner from Rob Haylea, in Cowplain Hants. Was out on his bike all the time.

I know she got through on repacharge but she should never have been demoted in first place (and neither should Hearts, I will never forget or forgive).

Don't know why you have mentioned sailing as they were never going to lose gold. It was attempt by French to see if they could grab silver.

Well we should do well on rowing but due to general squabbles internally, we didn't. Major fall outs in team with the old boy who was in charge previously being dumped, he didn't tolerate excuses or failure, and new empathetic and considerate coaching regime brought in.

Result = excuses and failure.

Disappointing result in hockey semi final but not entirely unexpected as Dutch No1 on world.

Still think they can grab bronze though, particularly if they play India who should close to Argentina.

Laura Muir into the 1500m Final.

Going to be tough to beat Hassan though.

Hopefully, Hassan putting too much pressure on herself by going for 5,000 & 10,000 m.

Yip, 983 to 989 plus the normal 2 Eurosport channels at 410 & 411, that's 9 Eurosport channels in total, all in HD as well.

Excellent, cheats should never prosper.

Just hope team GB can stay ahead of the Russian cheats in the medal table as well.
