Footballfirst
Today's case count of 2969 is the highest ever recorded since the start of pandemic (previous record was 2649), albeit with record levels of testing. The failure of the JCVI to provide a recommendation, as yet, to vaccinate under 18s leads to the inevitable conclusion that the virus will be left to its own devices in schools, effectively a herd immunity strategy by infection rather than by vaccination. If that is now the policy, then schools have to be left open with no isolation measures for contacts of infected pupils.

As the infection rates in London increase in the coming days and weeks, and among the Celtic Covid carriers and their friends and family, it will of course be all Westminster's fault. What a bunch of ****ing morons. Glass Houses ya Millwall.... Still hating Blacks down that way? Anyway Scotland has 200 per 100,000. Manchester has 400. If that is now the policy, then schools have to be left open with no isolation measures for contacts of infected pupils. I suspect it has been the policy for a short while now. It's the only thing that can explain what we're hearing from the two governments when viewed against the background of accelerating cases. Can you then explain why we in Scotland currently have the highest infection rate in Europe? Quite simple. The delta variant is highly infectious and is spreading rapidly in uncontrolled settings like schools and homes. The failure was in not preventing its arrival in the UK and once detected, containing it through effective test, trace and isolation enforcement. Our case rate is miles ahead of both England and Wales so what you have said would be equally relevant to them. So I ask again why is it so bad in Scotland? Reporting of case numbers seems to be getting a bit silly now tbh. Hospital numbers are about a tenth of what they were during previous peaks so it would be useful to have a bit of context around the "cases". How many are asymptomatic? What are they symptoms? etc. Hopefully, in the near future we can also move away from daily reporting and focus on ensuring that hospitalisations and deaths are not increasing

The infection rate is beyond what Scotland can handle through its track trace and isolation, so is now out of control. The controls worked in a confined area during the Moray outbreak, but failed when it hit Glasgow, and has now spread out of control to Edinburgh, Dundee and beyond. We know that adherence to isolation measures is low. In England, they have just abut restricted it to the highly affected areas such as Bolton, Blackburn, Burnley Salford etc, but it hasn't gone away, so could still break out more widely. Both the UK and SG governments will be looking for the school holidays to break the chains of infection.

Maybe with English schools not closing for another month we might see their infections level shoot up and ours drop.

Even with the decent reduction in the percentage of folk ending up in hospital it's still around 5% of cases. If we're recording 2-3000 cases a day at the moment that is still going to translate to 100-150 daily hospitalisations relatively soon which, clearly, is not sustainable. It would be irresponsible to completely just disregard case numbers now, so close to the end of this thing.

Yes but even those who are hospitalised are only there briefly , apparently , apart from those in ICU . Let’s not get down the road of hospitals May get “ overwhelmed “ even at its peak they werent turning people away at A and E . Yes it did impact on other treatments for other illnesses and that’s to be considered if numbers rose a lot higher than they are just now but it then it begs the question , the elephant in the room when will the NHS ever cope ? CJGJ
How can you prove your vaccination status in the rest of the UK? People in Scotland aged 16 and over can request a paper copy of their coronavirus vaccination status online via the NHS inform website, or by calling 0808 196 8565 if they are due to travel in the next 14 days. I agree that the lack of availability of non AZ vaccines for the younger age groups may have guided the JVCI's lack of a decision on school age children. The problem is that school kids have more prolonged close contact with multiple others during school hours than any other age group. With no immunity and the easing of restrictions in schools, including mask wearing and social distancing, it is inevitable that there will be rapidly increasing infection rates. We may yet see a review of the guidance on the use of AZ, or an adapted AZ vaccine for the under 30s.
