Ian Murray - "This is our Story"

I appreciate what David Southern did to assist FOH in the early days and that is clear from the book.  However, I always had reservations about his role as the club lurched towards insolvency, so I have mixed feelings about what he did (positive) and what he didn't do (negative).

He was on the inside and saw what was going on with the finances, the 2012 share issue that wasn't honoured by the Romanov regime after the £1.1m was received from fans, the sale of 7,000 season tickets, the £2m+ funds from which were spent within days of the end of the previous season. Nothing was ever said publicly about these things, nor any expression that the club was trading while insolvent.

The option would have been for him to resign and alert fans about what was going on.  Administration may have come sooner and liquidation might have followed. Had that occurred then over £3m in fans funds would have been permanently lost.   All's well that ends well, but that was one hell of a risk to take with other people's money, while continuing to take a salary from the club.

Not sure what you mean when you say the £1.1 m share purchase wasn't honoured. OK share certificates weren't issued but I think that was the least of our concerns at the time. We had done our bit in saving the club from liquidation and in the end that resulted in our shares being recognised.

I am quite relaxed about the risk Southern took. It was worth it.

(When I say relaxed I mean I think he was right.)

David Southern did a lot what was best for David Southern I always thought, Stewart Fraser could not handle the pressure in the end, mind the Lith accountant was a joke figure.

Bazzas right boot

I will probably buy this giving the responses on here.

Checked his voting record to assure myself he wasn't a plonker either, and he's not, so all good on that front as well.

I am glad I read this excellent book just after the launch considering the amount of snippets on here. If you have still to read it suggest you stay away from this thread

The story has changed a bit since I first read it this morning.

His challenge to the Unite Union is straight out the David Cameron/Theresa May/Boris Johnson phrasebook. They haven't mentioned what type of candidate they are thinking of to replace him yet but he's trying to attack them already. Oh dear.

Or not it seems

Labour MP Ian Murray has been reselected as a candidate in the next general election despite union opposition.

The Unite union accused the MP for Edinburgh South of consistently undermining the Labour leadership.

Party rules could have triggered a contest to replace him if the move was backed by a third of local members or affiliated unions.

However, all four constituency member branches have voted to reselect him.

Mr Murray said: "It is a huge honour to have been reselected as Labour's candidate in Edinburgh South for the forthcoming general election.

"Representing my home city of Edinburgh is a great privilege, and I have always put this constituency first and foremost."

Reading this just now and currently in chapter 2. Really interesting but scary at the same time.

The most ridiculous story so far apart from the sacking of George Burley was to give Juho Makela a £5,000 goal bonus. This was instructed by Fedotovas to go into the players contract, known as a “golden goal” bonus.

Makela was rubbish and didnt score many but he scored a hat trick against Alloa in the League Cup, resulting in us owing him £15,000 that we never had.

Murray also said that Romanov appeared at 11pm on a transfer deadline night and asked “Who is the best player in Scotland just now that we could sign?” He was told Barry Robson and we then faxed Dundee Utd there and then to see if we could sign him.

I thought that the minute I flicked over the page. Felt a shiver down my spine towards the end of the 3rd chapter.

A reminder of why imo FOH should have some sort of veto on any one person having control.

Like a 90% super majority veto?

Yes.

Is that what happened when Levein was allowed to make more signings?

His voting record is absymal. He may have done well by Hearts but it's probably kept him in his seat since. Dreadful wee person.

Got this from my daughter for Christmas. Had finished it by Boxing Day morning. It really is a “must read” for all Hearts fans. Even though we know how it all panned out in the end it really does show how close we were on several occasions to dying.

I'm left so imo his voting record is OK.

Obviously if your right aligned it's not.

You should be even more in disagreement with him then.

Hes is everything that is wrong with modern day labour, a centrist MP passing himself off as a man of the people.

That bit is still to be written but it ends with us beating the drop by a mile, winning the Scottish Cup and going on a legendary Europe League run......!

His voting record imo is far more aligned with the left centre than many of his colleagues in Scotland tbh.

He'd be a good SNP mp imo tbh.

Shame he's a union man over everything, but each their own.

funnily enough was planning on finding this thread to comment as I read the book over the festive period. A thoroughly great read, although there were more than a few factual errors, he should have got Robbo (“Ceefax”) to give it a proof read 😂

A really great insight into the struggle to get things done against the odds and the backdrop of a difficult bureaucratic system in Lithuania, shysters like Bob Jamieson, pathetic Hibs fans writing to the Ukio administrators, and The petty internal politics and egos within the FoH.

cannot believe some people cancelled their FoH direct debits because of Ian Murray’s politics :cornette:

I picked up on a couple of things. It's not 79.9% of shares that will be handed over to FOH. It is only 75.1%. He also refers to Halifax taking over Bank of Scotland.  It was actually a merger on a share for share basis in the two companies becoming shares in HBOS.

Yes. If only Labour had ran a more purist far left socialist campaign dominated by those men of the people Momentum and the SWP then we might have been spared Boris.

On topic the book is well worth reading. It doesn't add much to our knowledge of the Romanov years but it does give some new insights into the workings of FoH and Ann Budge (though apparently watered down to get it on sale in the Hearts shop).
