The 35-year-old is a free agent after leaving Aston Villa, where he made more than 70 appearances - the majority as a starter - over the past two seasons. Whelan, who spent almost a decade with Stoke City in the English Premier League prior to joining Villa, is currently in Edinburgh to speak with Hearts management and look around the club’s facilities. I’ll be interested in seeing how he manages with a proper holding midfielder beside him. A Haring or Whelan, if there’s any truth behind that. During the league cup game, he was being forced to pick the ball up from deep and then turning into a solid wall of opposition players. No-one really looked impressive during those games, Halkett aside. He didn’t avoid getting stuck in when necessary either, which some people seem to have completely ignored.
