Am I alone in thinking there's a power play message here from France? Look at the chaos we can cause if there's no deal and you piss us off.

Macron has an EU veto (remember those days?) and control over the majority of stuff getting to our island nation. We don't hold any cards compared to that.

Well, we maybe have a couple of jokers.

I have no doubts, there is an element of that going on. Unfortunately, it plays straight into the hands of the UK government, the right wing media, and Farage et al.

What we are seeing right now (and it’s about to ramp up massively from this point), is an orchestrated attack on the EU and individual EU leaders, Remainers, Coronavirus and absolutely anything, to deflect attention away from what Leaving in January is going to mean for us all. Project Fear is, as predicted, becoming Project Reality.

So, the answer is to blame everyone and everything else other than the root cause of this debacle. And by winding-up the masses, implying bullying by the EU, unfair demands by Macron et al etc, the Government will hope to build a siege mentality, that everyone is against the UK. So, so predictable.

Sadly, more than enough people will swallow this BS.

Nearly 60% of Kent voted Leave. It was the actions of those people and the other Leave voters that ultimately put us where we are now, not “The Boris Circus Show of Horrors”. So, Christmas Greetings and commiserations to the 40% of Kent who voted Remain. To the other 60%, I underline my message of, “Suck it up”.

Yes, Kent is now living in the Utopia it voted for. Hope it gets a lot, lot worse for them. 🤞

Indeed. They voted for it so they can deal with the worst of it...meanwhile, the rest of us will eventually be forced to "suck it up" as well.

Having previously lived in Kent for a few years, I can only wish them all the very worst hardship and misery.

It's a horrible shithole populated by horrible racists.

Here's hoping the Scottish electorate comes to their senses.

We'd be stupid to look at how Westminster is running the country and not think "We can do better than this".

The Tories elected an idiot to be their leader and our PM, because they knew that the xenophobic masses in England would re elect him.  Triumphalism at it's worst. Now he's there, the predictable shitfest is occurring, quicker than expected, due to the unexpected arrival of a worldwide pandemic, which has him completely out of his depth and trying to please all his supporters, all of the time. He had Trump as his Get out of Jail card, for a trade deal, but that's now gone. He's lost his, 3 word slogan, mate, Cummings, who was probably running the country.

It seems that he's managed to piss off most of the leaders in Europe, and he has the likes of Farage, who has no accountability for any fallout from Brexit, and Francois, a xenophobic idiot, keeping the pressure on to show Johnny Foreigner that Britain still rules the waves.

I can't see him lasting through next year. He'll be dumped by the Tory Right to deflect the blame, from their party thinking, to him. Or he'll quit, citing medical grounds.

FFS people, I know I'm a bit horrible with no voters, but I think a day out at Blair drummond is a lot more loving than wanting Romanians collectively shiting in Kentish Manor Gardens. :cheese:

The whole saga is Trumpian in so many aspects.   And a bit like the Life of Brian too.     Large sections of the electorate intrigued and beguiled by a strange non-conformist candidate to the extent that they think he must  be the new Messiah because he's "different" - totally ignoring the possibility that the reason he's different is because he's dumb  and easily manipulated by dangerous folk (like Cummings or Bannon).

One aspect of the Brexit referendum fallout that annoyed me was the way Farage, Grease-Dogg, Francois, Bone  etc ridiculed absolutely any  comment or opinion made by anyone outside the pro-Brexit cult by referring to the  person as  "just a Remainer" - which morphed into "just a Remoaner".    Smug entitlement at it's most obnoxious.

Surely most European leaders are aghast at how a developed country like the UK could elect someone as incompetent and out of his depth as Boris ?

We already had the perfect storm at the time of the Brexit vote, imo, with mass migration from Syria and Afghanistan into Europe combining with Corbyn being the leader of the Labour Party, thus allowing the Brexiteers to feed on fear relatively unopposed. It wouldn't surprise me at all that the storm is still continuing...

It'll become self feeding in the next few years as the impact of the self harm bites and the types that voted for it try to find someone else to blame

Am I reading this right....

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-55404087

“The EU's executive branch, the European Commission, has called on member states to lift travel bans imposed against the UK...

But with EU countries free to set their own rules on border controls they may continue with their own policies.“

Isn’t ‘getting control of our border’ why many people voted for Brexit?

The English and Welsh weren't interested in facts, given the opportunity to get rid of some foreigners.

What we just need to do is come up with an interim deal that lasts for a fixed amount of time but doesn't entirely please either side, one that will get renegotiated in due course. Both sides can tell their folk "Look, this isn't a great deal, we know, but for the sake of minimising disruption, especially at a time like this, we've sorted it out temporarily and will revisit it".

Right, who had the UK receiving airlifted fresh food on their 2020 Bingo Card?

Lufthansa Will Airlift Food to Britain, Skirting Port Logjam

The German airline will fly 80 metric tons of food to Doncaster-Sheffield airport in northern England using a Boeing Co. 777F freighter, a spokesman said Tuesday.
. . .

The head of Britain’s Food and Drink Federation, Ian Wright, told Bloomberg TV earlier that if the port crisis wasn’t resolved there would be shortages of foodstuffs sourced from outside the U.K., such as citrus fruits and some green vegetables.

J Sainsbury Plc warned Monday that the chaos at Dover could result in gaps on its shelves for items including lettuce, other salad leaves, cauliflowers and broccoli, as well as fruit. Tesco Plc, Britain’s biggest retailer, urged customers not to panic-buy, saying it had good levels of stock, including foods sourced from France.

Presumably after consulting with 27 leaders.

Not sure what the fish think though.

They'll probably think that the deal is poissonous.

Here's some reading material for you. The French suffered tremendously during the war and a large number of folk in the resistance risked life and limb to not only resist the Germans but also to aid the Allies.

It's not going to be very pretty, this last minute deal. I take it, it needs approval from parliament?

Yes but might be approved as temporary arrangement pending proper (not rushed) consideration by Parliaments in January.

Meh, sorry, you're right. I've not got anything as clever as redjambo's poissonous post to make up for it either, which is I'm sure why you didn't lecture him as well—not because he's not a Yank

Sorry but I am a bit late. There is or soon  will be a border down the Irish Sea. Which will breach the GFA.

Which a border in Ireland would not.

Harsh on the Dutch and Belgians. Even on the French though it was certainly not their finest hour.

Genuine question; How do you think we would have fared if the channel wasn't there to act as a small buffer to the German blitzkrieg?

British Army were defeated more recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. (Possible to call the retreats / handovers to the Americans from Basra and Helmand 'tactical withdrawals).

No one says the soldiers weren't very brave. Just the circumstances were against them.

Not very different from others. But we were in a stronger position and had politicians like Churchill and Bevin who would not countenance surrender.

Brexit : a chance to talk (more) shite about a shite decision. The last four years, in a nutshell.

That means nothing. Surrender is rarely a decision taken when there are other options, it's usually only the decision when it's that or complete destruction, and only an idiot opts for the latter.
