He's doing an A Level course at 6th Form College in Rugby and Sports, so he's in the gym in the morning, rugby training in the afternoon three days a week, game on a Wednesday, he goes the the gym at night as extra training along with sprint training every day, I'm not entirely sure what weights he's using other than he's got up to 50kg squats(?). He started in September at 8 stone, he's 9.75 stone now.

Up the protein, up the carbs . Pasta, rice its all good. Sounds like cutting isnt on the agenda just getting bigger, still young too. As long as he is eating clean and getting in as much protein as your bank balance will allow in his diet , he will continue to gain.

Cant comment on squats , I am pretty tall and they have a habit of damaging my back when I get over 120, but I am not exactly in my prime at 37 🤣

Thanks👍

I was just a bit concerned that all the extra protein might be putting stress on kidneys or something else, he's certainly working off what he's taking in by the looks of things.

Anyone tried shilajit? Supposed to give you energy and boost testosterone?

The fact it has been around for a very long time (used in some cultures for couple of hundred years apparently) and i've only heard of it now makes me think it's a lot of sh-ilaj-it.

Yeah I am very suspicious that all the adverts are hype and sales marketing.

You should try some Testosterone for your Testosterone 🤣

Not your cup of tea , Ive tried a massive amount of supps and get bloods done quite a bit nothing worked as well as a simple ZMA. Use Mobu for all of my stuff .

If only testosterone would not leat to an early grave I’d try it.

I use ZMA from my protien.

Its not going to put you in a hole in the ground in your prime , its pretty common practice now for men 40+ to be on TRT. Can be used sensibly, like everything else it can also be abused but its certainly one of the safest steroids available.

Got a few gym goals this year:

1) Sub 1h20 mens singles Hyrox

2) Gymnast ring muscle up

3) 50m handstand walk

4) 100kg clean (this should be easy, but I get in my head anytime I get over 80kg and struggle to get under the bar)

5) Dubai Turf games, place top half of everyday category.

Will be a good year if I can hit all 5 of them!

We're at the end of March and I've managed a sub 1h20 Hyrox and a 100kg clean. Good progress so far.

I haven't been to crossfit this year though, so 2/3 are gonna be tough (and sorting a team for 5!). I think I'm gonna focus more on bulking up a bit for the next wee while, Hyrox training meant I lost about 5kg.

Anyone got any decent programming recommendations? Looking for someone to help with upper body focus for 6-8 week chunks.

Good work 👏. Hyrox is no joke. Has got me curious, maybe something to aim for once i'm done with powerlifting.

In terms of an easy to follow strength program Wendler 531. 'Boring but big' template would likely suit your goal. Could do 2 waves of it in 8 weeks.

Thanks for this! Did some reading up on it and did my first session today.

Simple and no messing around - my kind of workout. Was in an out in 30 mins (skipped conditioning as I'm doing a Hyrox PFT tomorrow).

Bulking and cutting is like putting your foot down on the accelerator in the snow, unless it's for a sustained period you are spinning your wheels.

As someone who's wasted time doing this and knows several successful bodybuilders (natural and non-natural pros), powerlifters and strongmen the correct way to do this is fully commit to one goal for a sustained period (16+ weeks IMO).

Main thing would be to check what the intended outcome is and set the goals around that.

Cheers for that 👍

There's bits on line on it but first hand experience I recon is best.

The outcome would be to increase weight with muscle before the rugby season starts in September, so 4 months or so.

2 of the lads I train with play/played rugby (not pros though, although one played for Scottish deaf national team) and their general approach was to get as big and strong as they could offseason while maintaining some level of conditioning and then once they were fully back for pre-season training their weight would come back down and settle again.

From my experience of bulking 4 months is a good period to work with. Just don't let him go too daft with the calories or it'll be more than just muscle and water he piles on 😅

Thanks for that👍 he's already getting a wee belly and moons and he's NEVER had those before, he's always Ben like a Gypsies Lurcher, all rib and cock!! So he's already getting second thoughts about bulking!

Numb nut question: what would be a realistic time frame to train for and run a marathon?

Background : I have an (ahem) friend who is late 40’s, never ran in years, carries a wee bit of weight but is looking to train for and complete a marathon, not caring about a time - would just like to say I’ve done one.

Started walking each day and will shortly start that couch to 5k. Would doing a marathon this year (running without walking) be realistic or should I just pick one from Spring next year?

Any recommendations for a good marathon for a 1st timer ( in UK).

A spring marathon means you're training through the winter and your training plans can get interrupted quite a bit with bad weather like snow & ice, and that can be quite stressful for someone doing it for the 1st or 2nd time. Although training for an autumn marathon is during the summer months, if you get out early enough you will miss the hot sun.

Just following up on this 3 months later. It’s so easy to do. You don’t need to think, you just rock up and smash 45 mins.

I do 5/3/1 of squats, deadlifts or bench (skip OHP as I have an iffy neck). Then do lower weight 5x 10 reps of same exercise. Then 5x 5 pull ups and tri dips.

I’ve put on 5kg of muscle, down to 15% BF, it’s the best program I’ve been on. Super simple and easy to follow, and any level of experience can start.

Now genuinely looking at the 1000lb club as realistic. I’ve sacked off CrossFit and just doing this plus hyrox conditioning myself.

Squat - 140kg

Bench - 90kg

Deadlift - 150kg

Excellent 👌.

Funny enough I don't tend to do OHP often either 😅, bigger focus on bench.

The beauty is if you're still doing hyrox for conditioning you could probably switch focus back to crossfit fairly easily, but much stronger and more jacked 😅

I just bought bulk electrolyte powder.

Is it good for you and stuff like that?

I'm pretty bored of CF tbh. I don't particularly enjoy the gymnastics and the pre-programming (which was amazing as I was starting) is now becoming quite limiting and frustrating my progress.

The conditioning element is good for a cardio blast, but it's normally 10-15 minutes which isn't really enough. If I do a Hyrox program, I'm getting 40-60 minutes of cardio beasting and I feel it's more beneficial.

Thanks for the help and pointing me in the right direction - you're a fantastic asset to many people on this board who're looking for help!

what do you mean and stuff like that. As in electrolytes and similar supps? Depends what you are using them for when, what you are training, how you are training. Its a very difficult question to answer without a bit more detail.

Feel free to DM me with a bit more info and ill do my best to answer your question. One thing you will find with a lot of supps is different PTs and nutritionists have opposing opinions on them.

I've never used any of these things but surely it has to be a bit more thought out than just randomly taking them here and there.

Any recommendations for knee sleeves for squatting, leg pressing and so on.

I bought a cheap pair from Amazon which were decent at first but the elastic degraded very quickly.

I bought a pair of Strength Shop double ply knee sleeves when I started out and 8 years (and several heavy gym sessions) later they are still going strong!

Theres no scientific evidence that supports wearing them. I wear neenca ones when training , usually resulting in cramp in my hamstrings and me taking them off.

Are they pretty tight? Cramping in your hamstrings sounds like they're cutting blood flow or something.

I squat so much better with sleeves on than without. Dual ply def gives a little pop out the hole. Nothing close to knee wraps (I get about 30kg out of those) but def better than without. Not even sure if i've squatted 200kg+ before without sleeves 🤔

Carbon Fibre Insoles?

I have a pair of Puma Deviate Nitro 2s. I run around a 4min km pace. They comfortably shaved 15seconds off that pace. I felt I could also sustain the pace for longer.

I read that doing lots of miles in carbon plated shoes can be a bad thing, so I have gone back to training with my Saucony Rides then using my Nitros for races (5kms, Hyrox, etc).

But you'll instantly feel the difference. The energy saving is very noticeable.

Cheers for that 👍

My son is at a sports college with a good Basketball course, a lot of the basketball players wear them, my son is doing the rugby course and hoped they would improve his speed a bit and also his jumping, he plays at fullback.

I'll get him a pair and see how he gets on.

Long time since I did any serious running but I always used to rate New Balance.

Ironically I just bought running shoes yesterday so I can start again, after playing football on Sunday and realising my cardio fitness levels have dropped from mediocre to diabolical. Just a basic £50 pair of Asics for now.
