Anyone recommend a good pair of running trainers?

Doing the Edinburgh half marathon this year for the first time.

I’d recommend you go into a decent running shop. The staff will be knowledgable and sort you out, should be able to do a wee test run. Run4it in Lothian Road are good. I myself use Saucony. They suit me as I’m pretty light weight with a short stride.

This is the right answer. The shoe for me won’t be the shoe for you, so many variables.

They should have a machine you run on and it can help narrow down the list for you.

I use Puma Deviate Nitros (2E width) and Asics Novablasts because I have super wide feet.

I was 12 stone 13 lbs in September 2023 heaviest ive ever been . Started calorie counting , dropping sweets , crisps etc . Tried to swap lager for diet tonic and gin ! Educated myself more about food contents re sugars , saturated fats , unsaturated fats carbs etc . Paid for a consultation with a really good nutritionalist . Been more aware of portion sizes , limited my brown bread intake ,  I’m now 10stone 12 ! Still about half a stone to lose but now a healthy weight according to BMI index .

Takes time , knowledge , effort , discipline , commitment and will power . Certainly fell off the wagon a few times but got back up again 😎

Might have been mentioned before on here but I find the free Yuka app very useful

I started going to the gym again around 18 months ago, a mix of weights and cardio. However, now I've moved jobs, I can't get to the gym as it opens at 0715, and I start work at 8. I've been doing some calisthenics work outs which I really enjoy, but certain areas get neglected as you're not using weights to pull. I don't have much space in the house for a set of dumbells, so I was thinking about a decent set of resistance bands. I like the look of the gymproluxe set. Has anyone on here used them? If not, can anyone recommend a decent set for me?

Saw these on Dragons Den a few months back and thought they looked decent.

Up to 100kg (delighted, BF at 14%).

5k time at 21m. Half marathon time at 1h30.

Squat at 150kg. Deadlift at 180kg. Bench still at 100kg.

Goal is a sub 1h10 hyrox and 1000lb club within the same month. Not too far off! Always feels good to have something to train towards, certainly helps with motivation. But 3-4 cardio sessions a week is making it very difficult to keep building muscle, super contradictory goals.

Nice work. Good combo of endurance and some decent strength numbers 👌.

I've been putting off starting running. Ideally I want to just start with setting a 5km time and chipping away at improving that, but got a couple of strength goals still to tick off.

I added some 60-90 min ‘zone 2’ runs into my training. I say zone 2, but they were zone 3/4. Amazing what a difference it made to my 5k time. So much easier.

I've been on a journey. Been taking proten shakes twice a day. Someone has said to add creatine because of my age. (41)

I've lost 7 stone of fat and then switched to body recomposition diet and exercise and have to stay I've stayed consistent at 100 kilos for the last 3 months.

I'd love to move the fat along faster but know it's a balancing act of building muscle and losing fat.

Im happy with the muscle build and arms, back, chest, legs and shoulders are coming along nicely

So my questions:

1) creatine- worthwhile adding it in?

2) stomach/abs. The reason why I stopped the fat burn at 15 and a half stone was at that point the skin started to get loose. Anything I can do at my age group to mitigate?

There is a lot of benefits to taking creatine, however, it can also have a lot of negative effects depending on any. Health conditions. I would also ensure if you do choose to take it read up properly on dosing it as it is something that needs cycled. Not something im comfortable saying to take as I dont know your medical condition. Certainly google it and have a good read before making a decision on its suitability for you.

As for loose skin, coconut oil, hot baths bio-oil, collagen, massage, firming creams (speak to your gp) and sadly time.

Creatine is fine as long as you take sensible doses and don't have any underlying health conditions.

These studies show that short and long-term supplementation (up to 30 g/day for 5 years) is safe and well-tolerated in healthy individuals and in a number of patient populations ranging from infants to the elderly. Moreover, significant health benefits may be provided by ensuring habitual low dietary creatine ingestion (e.g., 3 g/day) throughout the lifespan.

Creatine is one of the most researched supplements and has a load of benefits. It can give high creatinine readings (as this is the waste product of creatine) which can give false indication of kidney issues on a blood test (not ideal if you have kidney issues and rely on blood tests being monitored), but it's typically considered safe. I've actually got some in the cupboard I should really start using again.

Yep - had a big argument with my doctor who wanted to put me on statins and antibiotics because my Creatinine levels were high.

Was shocked when I told him absolutely not under any circumstances.

Well after doing nothing at all fitness wise for the last 2 years due to becoming a dad and just not having the time, after getting to my heaviest ever at 15 and a half stone I bit the bullet 2 weeks ago and joined the gym.

Been eating healthier and even getting up early to get to the gym before work where I can and already feeling the benefit, down to 14 stone 9 and defo have more energy.

It was a Bannatynes that I joined and I have to say i'm liking their technogym app for recording what I do on each machine at the gym and will be signing up for their 12 week intro programme so a PT can give me more of a set workout rather than me just using whatever machine is free.

Been a while since I posted in here

A few weeks back I done the Hadrian's wall ultra. 112km Carlisle to Newcastle. Following Hadrian's wall, including 5000ft elevation. Few steep sections

My longest run yet. I'm still out of shape so was all about finishing lines not finishing times. 19hours. Could've not an hour plus off but at half way it's a game whether to push on or conserve. It's my longest distance so I didn't want to burn out.

Thunderstorm at the start just to keep it interesting

Delighted to get it done. Bodies been in bits since.

Was on holiday so drove back 10+ hours from Cornwall last Friday and done the blast half marathon at cramming on sat.

2hr 13m , way over the time I'd hopes but was in a fair bit pain for most of it. Period of recuperation now.

Sticking to gentle 5km for a while.

Putting in the work but still can't get the weight off. Should probably do more intervals once the body is feeling better

My Gym membership is going up in price but by less than the cost of a cup of coffee per month. Until I opened the email I was worried it was going to be a big hike in costs. Still worth paying for all the benefits to my health as well as keeping the most muscle I can for my advancing years.

My youngest son's brother in law, is currently running from Lands End to John O' Groats.

I think it's a nine or ten week event.

The mental and physical fitness required for that is beyond me...at my peak.

I've looked at doing this previously, how was it? I'm doing Berlin marathon in September so all my focus is on that but fancy an ultra next year. I'm considering the backyard ultra at Beecraigs Park in April. 4.1 mile loops for 24 hours or as many as you can do. One loop on the hour every hour.

Was tough to say the least! First 10k I was excited and started a bit quick. Had to hold back.

Then by half way it was a game of should I conserve or push on and risk burning out.

In hindsight I could've probably knocked up to 2 hours off my time I reckon. But at these distances it's just a learning curve. Was all about getting it done.

Was a well established event though and rat race provide great aid stations and supply stops . Id certainly recommend.

My body has been in bits the last few weeks though. Hurt my back and stubbornly done a half marathon in between... I'm now in a recovery period 🤞😅

Edit- should have re-read my post as fair bit repetition there. But does sum it up.

Seeing others dropped out really fuelled me not wanting to be one of those guys

First day back at the Uni' boxing club after the summer holiday was like that. I was in my 30s at the time and everyone else was late teens or early 20s. Body absolutely destroyed for at least a week, and generally a pair of 'Irish sunglasses' to complete my misery.

Signed up for the Edinburgh men's 10k on the 21st of September and have done no training and loads of boozing. Arrived back in Qatar yesterday so will try to avoid the pub for the next four weeks and get 4-5 runs in a week. I've never done a 10k on the road before and this will be my first ever official event. Don't know what to expect, really. A bit nervous tbh.

I did this 10k in 2023.  I really enjoyed the route which takes you down and up the Royal Mile passing Arthurs Seat.  Before heading along the Cowgate towards the Western Approach road then finishing at Murrayfield.  The first 2k is mostly downhill so gets tougher afterwards.  I did quite well at this one and got my 2nd fastest 10k to date. Good Luck.

This is a beneficial routine for those of my vintage...and I recommend it for the over 65's

I basically follow this, along with some light weights, lunges and squats, every other day.

It would basically have represented a "warm up" when I was heavily involved in a combat "sport", back in my prime.

Finished in a little over 54 mins. I was pretty much at the back of the orange pen so found it fairly difficult to get past folk. I'll go for the green pen next year and hopefully knock a few minutes off that time. The conditions were perfect for my first run and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Mibbe aim for a half marathon next year too.

Well done.  I'm sure you will get into the 40s next time.  I actually got a late entry and did it myself.  As you said the conditions were perfect. I ran 38mins exactly which wasn't too far off a PB.  I should have gone off quicker but it really was conjested at the start line. Bit annoying not running 1 second quicker though. I'm tempted to go down and do the Yorkshire Marathon next month as well.

Ran the Dalmeny Trail Half marathon yesterday and what a cracking event by Blast Running. If anyone is interested in some well organised running events in and around Edinburgh, check them out, they have some pretty decent races over winter / spring. Really enjoyed yesterday, 3 weeks on from floundering in the heat of Berlin, yesterday was very enjoyable.

So having started back at the gym in March I managed to lose about 7kg (8.5kg fat lost and added 1kg muscle) but for about the last month I felt I'd just hit a plateau so decided to try intermittent fasting and after nearly a fortnight I'm starting to see the weight come off again.

Thought it would be more difficult but the only real changes I've made are being more disciplined when I'm having dinner (aiming for before 7 most days when before i'd happily eat dinner anytime up to 10pm), stopped fizzy juice etc after dinner so once i've eaten then it's water only for the rest of the night and somedays i'll take lunch at 1 instead of 12 which can give me anywhere upto a 16 hour fast (premise from what I've read is that after 12 hours from the last food/energy consumed and your body turns to stored fats for energy). Anyone else tried IF and did it work for you?

Last Saturday I did what was intended to be my last powerlifting competition before finally hanging the singlet up. Best preparation I have had and went in feeling good and ready. 3rd squat attempt with 282.5kg my hamstring tore. Bar also landed on my hand and clattered me in the neck/head in the aftermath, so nursing a mangled thumb and been recovering from neck pain and mild concussion.

Not how I planned to go out, so aim is now to rehab and by the time I am fit to compete again i'll be 40, so shooting for the masters records and then I can walk away happy 😅.

The last year has been a bit injury blighted and frustrating, injured the IT band last September and that took some time to heal. Got back to cycling and playing football, added in some weight training and then buggered the meniscus in my left knee. So last 7 weeks have been a toil, only been able to do upper body weights but nothing that uses the legs.

Knee is still sore but now manageable, started to add in some cyclin/spinning again, able to walk the dog for 30 minutes and doing some Pilates.

I definitely need to keep incorporating more Pilates/yoga/mobility work because at 46 I can't afford any more injuries

Just signed up for the Edinburgh half marathon on the 28th of May. Only done one 10k before so expecting a challenge.

It's the day after the Scottish Cup final too, so if Hearts are involved I'll need to be on my best behaviour.
