Funny and savage at the same time. Well worth a watch. I just cant seem to get excited about " The shape of water" but may try it. " Moonlight" and " Birdman" were ok but nowt outstanding i feel apart from Emma Stone in " Birdman" who was very good. Remember just because a film wins the " Best Film" Oscar it doesn't actually mean its the Best film of that year. After all the dreadful " How green was my valley?" beat " Citizen Kane" to the Best film of 1941. There are numerous examples of this. JFK-1
Just watched a film from 2010 starring Samuel L. Jackson called unthinkable. Apparently created a controversy at the time due to the subject matter. That being how far do we go to get vital information out of terrorist subjects during interrogation. The premise is that they have a terrorist in captivity. He has placed three nuclear devices in three separate US cities all of which are set to detonate at noon in 6 days time. Samuel L. Jackson is what you might call a 'special' agent when it comes to interrogation. His methods are decidedly unconventional. I will give an example without being too much of a spoiler. When he first approaches the subject no on else knows what he is about to do. He picks up an axe and chops a finger off the subject at which point everybody else goes ape shit. Now that's him just getting warmed up I wont give any further information on where it goes from there but I will say it does go down some very dark and questionable paths. And the question the film appears to be asking is how far do we go in a democracy when it comes to extracting information. My own opinion is that it depends what the information is. If it's tell me where three nukes due to detonate in three cities are then anything goes. Though in saying that as i said he ultimately went down a very dark and questionable path indeed which I can't speak of without being too much of a spoiler. Tommy Brown
I posted this on the TV series thread. A charming and innocent story of 3 young boys under 10 growing up in West Lothian in 1961 as Yuri Gagarin orbits the earth. The 3 boys were from West Calder and Pumpherston and do a great job for their age. It was written by an ex pupil of West Calder High school that I knew. He now adapts scripts for Foyle's War, Shetland, etc. It was made in 89. I honestly believe you'll enjoy it. Edit. Posted the wrong link above.
