RussAsia
Just hit a 91.. so even with my 20 handicap i am still over par.. A quick story about my 9 on the 15th.. i was in the bunker (as always) on the edge of the green and about to play my third shot.. about 16 yards.. so i thought about 50% with my 50 yard sand wedge.. always hit a bit more when i am in the sand.. anyway just as i was hitting the mouse to complete my shot i noticed that my club had changed to my driver and i drove the ball 128 yards out of bounds.. joke.. anyway my next shot which i hit softer landed in the rough on the edge of the green.. my next 2 shots went a combined 2 yards.. the 2nd of which went 0 yards.. Point being you are right on the edge of the green but in the rough.. i now realise you shouldnt play a chip shot as they go nowhere but what shot should i be playing.. any advice welcome.. Boof
Meh. Parred everything on the back 9 - I'm sure I heard this Beth Page bint going "Ma Ha" every time a birdie putt shaved the hole. 75 isn't going to trouble the engraver.
AndyMcI
Shot 73! Feels like i coulnd't have shot any lower, ecstatic, couldn't be happier Then i look at the leaderboard and Deviskan has shot 67 !!
ArmiyaRomanova
Interesting... Of the 10 players who've registered a score so far, 6 are Pros with no handicap advantage. But three of those with handicaps are now shooting around Par. Deviskan's got a commanding lead at the moment (is there something to be said for negative handicapping after all?). Will be interesting to see what happens when more players with handicaps turn in their rounds over the weekend, but early indications are that it is working to even thinks out a bit. AndyMcI
I always change it to full - even at very short distance these seem easier to control. I'll need to give that a try. I think with chip the problem its because it has to roll through the rough or fringe right in front of the ball. I'm guesing that full shot or pitch allow you to clear the rough stuff and first bounce is on the green.
Bigsmak
I always change it to full - even at very short distance these seem easier to control. I pitch it from the side of the green, and the bunkers and they work a treat. I only chip from the fringe or about 2 yrds off the green (have holed a few of those) TIP: If it is in a 40% lie.. take 2 clubs more and it seems to work out about fine! (unless your miles away)
Boof
Point being you are right on the edge of the green but in the rough.. i now realise you shouldnt play a chip shot as they go nowhere but what shot should i be playing.. any advice welcome.. I find chips and pitches a bit more controllable now after a lot of bad words (and practice) as long as there's no long stuff in the way. Any long stuff has me going for full or flop shots. It's crucial to read the lie of the ball.

Dave Spacey
I just shot a 73, seem of got to grips with my putting, i like faster greens. Had a couple of birdie's and only 1 double bogie on the 15th . With my handicap of 9 does that mean I'm in front of Deviskan?
ArmiyaRomanova
Try the flop flys high without much roll afterwards Flops out of rough or bunkers are very difficult to control though - you have to hit the meter bang in the centre or risk the ball going nowhere, or savagely off to the right. Unless I'm doing something very wrong....

Up to those that set up the tournaments to deal with their aftermath imho. And on that note, when the Bethpage Rage Single Round Tourney closes tomorrow I'll put up a leaderboard and ask for opinions on the handicap system. If they're generally positive, I'll start a four-round 'major' tourney - with handicaps applicable - late Monday evening. ArmiyaRomanova
BETHPAGE RAGE The final leaderboard from our single round tryout of a handicap system. Congratulations to the Winner, milanos, and to second and third placed hmfc21 and Dave243, who all used their handicaps to devastating effect on what's a tough course. The usual front-runners (Deviskan, ElephantStones, AndyMcI7, Chris1874) all still finished in the top ten despite having no stroke advantage, so well done to them. On balance, I do think that this evens the field out - although I am wary that some folk who haven't played that much and so haven't worked their averages down will get some additional benefit from their artificially high handicaps. But this advantage should disappear over time. I'm sufficiently encouraged to try the handicapping system out over a full four-round tournament, with different courses and conditions. So, late this evening I'll start another 'Major' tourney with handicaps in place. For anyone who wants to give themselves a better handicap advantage by lodging a couple of devastatingly poor rounds to drag their average down between now and this evening - too late, I've already taken note of everyone's current averages.
