Overall enjoyed my stay last Friday with the Mrs. Rooms are Morden and stylish.

Dinner was very good, I had the venison for main and cheesecake for dessert. However the service was extremely poor. Two tables came in after us and left before us with one of them even having a 3 course meal.

Basically got ignored. Had to ask for the desert menu, ask to take our order and ask for the bill.

Breakfast was meh.

Disappointed with the Skyline as it’s always been top notch previously.

I think imo that it’s a very mixed experience of staff they have and like any business you get what you pay for.  Remember this was a whole entire hotel operation opening up at one time.  I know the restaurant has been open for a good while now but, they would have had to upscale their staff numbers, considering breakfast starting at 0700 as well.   I remember being in there the day the hotel opened and there were newbies all over the place, the waitress we had told us this was her first day on the job.  Now I’m not making any excuses but, if they were short of *experienced staff then things can quickly slip, it’s not an easy shift and if there is not an experienced floor manager pulling the strings things can go south.  I’d imagine the coin counters (yes even at hearts) will not be paying staff for pre training, apart from initial induction & safety, training on the job is their likely MO……I’m sure a poor experience is fairly rare.

* even like 2 experienced staff calling in sick on the same shift.

Girl I know who works at the skyline restaurant has said they have been struggling to get and retain staff. She says it’s a decent job when going well and decent pay/tips but the Rotas are all over the place and the management are arseholes. Been a bit of a revolving door because of it.

Most hospitality businesses seem to be like that these days.

That is hospitality for you. It's not changed. Though do notice people put less work in since covid.

That’s the crux tbh…..you’ll never meet anyone looking to forge out a career serving tables, it’s for students/kids in between jobs looking to boost their income…..I think most folks would know that.  The only decent hospitality jobs would be in management etc.

My local pub/restaurant has different staff behind the bar and serving every time I go.  Must be tough to maintain standards.

The restaurant isnt expensive and not designed for the perfect culinary experience.

The food is very decent for the price and the service is fine.

Not sure what the moaners on here really expect sometimes. Never be happy about anything types imo.

The staff were really good the other night . Unsure re tips as they have the 10% service charge . Generally not a fan of this if the food / service is shit but it was fine the other night

Yes that’s why I got out of it years ago . There’s no real room for progress unless you work every hour under the sun abd the high turnover of staff is a nightmare if you are a manager too . I enjoyed waiting / bar work though .

You’ll find them in every walk of life……my B & B has 690 superb/very good reviews with 4 average and 2 poor reviews 🤷‍♂️…..it’s not like the stats are even close.  The 2 poor reviews points were absolutely puzzling  as well and both very similar, one of them commented that they could not actually find a single thing that was good, then failed to mention anything that was bad, just a moaner 🤬.  I did ask them both to elaborate on their findings but both failed to reply.

I would like to think that there are a mixed bag of people on here with varying skill sets and experience in a whole range of topics (although maybe a minority), as well as a huge amount of bull shitters always commenting on stuff like they are ITK….separating the wheat from the chaff is always difficult🤷‍♂️

It’s like when you go to one of those work seminars where there are about 25-30 people there and, you know 2-3 of them.  Within 5-10 minutes out comes the mouthpiece/know it all who presides to be the main vocal participant for the remainder of the day.

Off topic. All the caravan cleaners at my holiday park for the last 2 seasons have been black people.

There's loads of them and they all speak great English and work like Trojans.

There must be some kind of government initiative or sponsorship

Don’t forget a lot of our youngsters all suffer from “cant-be-arsed-itis”……..when I say youngsters I mean 16-23y olds….with the older band range set to increase with kin still staying with their parents, dinner on the table, mum cleans the room, does the laundry etc…….”what, get up at 7am for work, no chance”.

Try the Golf Tavern (your neck o' the woods) or any other in the 'Scotsman Group'.

It's just a way of suppressing proper wages like in the good ol' US of A.

In Australia ye'll get frowned upon for offering a tip as they pay proper wages. Bar staff there take it as somthing of an insuIt. I fell foul of that only to experience the polar opposite only days later in San Francisco.

I have Hardly ever left hotel reviews . I certainly wouldn’t be writing bad ones unless there were serious issues with the place . I’d rather send them private email . What’s the point in being nasty writing negative reviews ?

A negative review isn’t necessarily nasty, it’s about improving a service, if business owners really want to improve a service then they will want to know what points can be improved on.

On booking.com you can set up automated messages to people who have just booked…”welcome and thanks for your *booking  (recommend restaurants)” etc….….you can also set up an automated message on the day of departure….”thanks for staying with us, please consider a review”…..etc

Consider also a lot of potential customers will look at reviews to see the standards……how big is trip advisor 🤷‍♂️.

* I also plug my bike rental at this point 😁

Sorry I should have been clearer . When  I I meant “ negative “ I meant just a whingey moaning one about silly minor issues . I’m an avid watcher of “ 4 in a bed “ and it drives me nuts 🥜 this almost perfect comedy clip says it all

Tbf manners and attentiveness cost nothing. You get a smile and and a hello at McDonalds, it's not exclusive to some kind of fine dining experience.

The service I had at dinner was great, despite them being really stretched. You recruit attitude at that sort of level. The breakfast service was solely down to disinterest and poor recruitment. If expecting your presence to at least be acknowledged makes people top food critics, so be it.

What McDonalds do you go to?

You get a 'what TF you wanting' at my nearest, after they've ignored your presence under their nose fore several minutes, by which time most people will nip round to KFC to get served immediately

It will take time to build up a good reputation. It’s not competing with the Sheraton or the Caledonian but it also needs to be a cut above lower cost hotels.

I was lucky to see first hand three of the rooms just when it was opening (long story and to do with work). They are fitted out really nicely. Staff and getting some gems who stay is always the challenge.

I worked in a 5 star hotel for 12 years and the turnover of staff was about 40% a year. It’s endemic in hospitality.
The hotel I worked in introduced the “discretionary service charge” with all money going to the staff. It gives them an extra £300 to £600 a month depending on the season and how busy they are. Its was brought in to try and retain staff as traditionally hospitality pays close to the living wage.

The guy that hands out the wrist bands at the PR hospitality bar speaks to the junior members of staff pretty appallingly . The two guys that direct people up the escalators and who are always very helpful seem to get it in the neck from him in front of supporters a bit too much . Just an observation

Pretty sure rooms on some nights we're pricier than the Sheraton.
