Yes, there is a small percentage of people here who are loyal monarchists. They're outnumbered by people who would prefer to dump the crown, and even more heavily outnumbered by people who don't give a shit.

Oh yes let’s add those to the list too. The British empire brutally murdered, raped and pillaged civilisations the world over, and now we get to watch an unelected “Royal” sitting on a golden throne, have a crown covered in stolen jewels driven to a palace in a convoy of three Rolls Royces, and tell you about how people starving is a priority. All whilst docile people get outraged that you’re not willing to celebrate the Queens Jubilee, whilst kids up and down the country are shaking with hunger, and wake up in a freezing cold house. I don't honestly believe Liz commented to someone y'know Big Boab in Vancouver deserves a medal so give him one, I suspect certain departments were asked to submit potential recipients and I was vetted accordingly. Interesting point you raise, almost got kicked out a cab last night for having the temerity to suggest that may have overdone it with the union jacks around town. I did two years National Service in the British army and got no medals. I didn't even get a 'thank you'. As for the monarchy, it's well past the time that Canada severed it's colonial ties with the UK. To me, it's absurd that Canada's head of state is a foreigner who is also head of the Anglican church. Last time I checked, only about 5% of Canadians are Anglican. The current arrangement is definitely a hold-over from colonial times and well past it's "best before" date. Having said that, most Canadians don't care much one way or the other ... they have more important things to be concerned about.

We've been here before with a referendum. It went down. The easy bit is getting shot of the Royals (as in, family). The hard bit is replacing the institution of 'The Crown'. An executive state presidency like the US or France? That was voted down. A non-executive presidency appointed by parliament? That was kyboshed too. Therein lies the problem at the heart of Westminster democracies like UK, Canada, Australia and NZ. They've all got 'The Crown' as their top level institution. It's a very hard thing to replace, and nobody can agree on a robust replacement.

Keep the Westminster system with a prime minister. Parliament can get rid of (bad) prime ministers at any time. Reserve powers of the (current) Governer General ('The Crown') to be handed over to the High Court of Australia (highest jurisdiction). Thereafter renamed 'The State'. Popularly elect a president every 3 years with complete authority to cut ribbons, open things, kiss babies, dish out awards and fly the flag when abroad. Bring it on......
