The figure jumped to 12 million in 2022-2023, a rise of 600,000 - or 0.78 percentage points. Absolute poverty is the measure used by the PM when describing the government's record. But I also think Kettle's analysis of what Sunak should do (as opposed to what he probably will do) is reasonably sound. For example, I'd forgotten that Michael Howard held on for a few months after losing in 2005. It's remarkable to think that Sunak is almost certainly a worse leader than Howard - who was a political liability and quite possibly off his rocker as well. For those not in the know, no one pays CGT on their principle residence. Rayner lived in the house in question from buying it but, for the last couple of years of ownership, she was stopping over with the guy she later married. As far as I'm aware, she wasn't letting out her own property at the time, so there's no reason why it didn't remain her own private residence. Even if there were to be a tax liability on the property (which there isn't), the absolute maximum she'd have been due to pay is under £6,500 - chicken feed to the amounts that are systematically scammed by McVey, her husband, Fox and others who have got the taxpayers paying for property that they then rent out, keeping all the proceeds.
