Players who Played for big teams but were actually not very good

Rawrrrrrrr

I have always thought Rio Ferdinand MUST be providing other "sevices", I mean he is total ****e! Whenever Man U let one in guess who usually is at fault? I've never understood WHY he gets a game with them. Jackie Charlton years ago was another, although explained due to his super famous brother.

Are you serious?

Some of the contributions to this thread are pretty bizarre. It's not over-rated or disliked players.

Think you've made a mistake there!

It was Alex N'Yarko I believe....

Right enough.

Bakayoko was a CM legend though.

He was that. First player I used to sign in CM 97/98 every time!

Not me! With the ?1m I started out with, I always signed Dariusz Adamczuk, Paul Jack, Cameroon international Thomas Libih and youngster John Hamilton - just to fill out the squad a bit. It took me years to finally figure it out, and switch to 3-4-3... whereupon Hearts skooshed the SPL and Champions League.

Spot on. A midfield with Bakayoko, Svindal Larsen and Niclas Alexanderson was immense.:) Salad days.

I used to be a boring bassa and go Barca most of the time!

I was only 12 though so...:P

Used to buy

Bakayo

Trezeguet

Henry (he was quite tricky to land sometimes)

Christian Worns

Rio Ferdinand

Sibierski

Diomede

Dhorasoo

Ortega

Landreau! (Pick it out!!)

Alfonso & Oli from Betis were always good signings too.

I'm glad I gave up Champ/FM a couple years ago now!

The only time I tried it with a 'big' team was with Newcastle. The squad Dalglish left them was a joke: Ian Rush? Stuart Pearce? Alessandro Pistone?! I took them over mid-season with them in the bottom three, got Shearer back from injury a couple of months later, and ended up losing the Cup Final in the last minute to Robbie Fowler's goal. But we were on the up: our first trophy followed a year later, then the EPL, then the CL by beating Juventus in back-to-back finals (first on pens, then thanks to an own goal :)).

By this point, I'd brought in Riquelme and Veron, Jon Dahl Tomasson was doing the business in the hole (the most important position in my 3-4-3), Brian Pinas was my most consistent player - and Frank Muller (did he even exist in real life?) had taken over from Shearer. I was true to Newcastle's entertaining ethos, and it was great fun.

A lot of people seem to remember the 97/8 version for some reason. I was a bit weirded out by Hearts' real life 99/0 - because it paralleled almost exactly how I'd done that season (3rd with 54 points). I can still go back to the very first CM - very bottom-of-the-range, in which I won the European Cup with Norwich after 20 years in charge, and my favourite players were Junior Bent and Mike Sheron. David Busst always scored an own goal whenever you played Coventry in this version, for some reason... And in the first version of CM2 (95/6), I was Hearts, my sadsack brother was Rangers - and we knocked them out the Cup 3-0 at Ibrox, going on to beat Celtic in the final.

I haven't played in years - but will definitely be seeking out a copy of FM '09 now I've got a new laptop that can cope!

Miller barely ever played for Man Utd. Was a waste of a signing because he was brilliant at Celtic

Liam Miller was brilliant at Celtic? He hardly played for them!

Cannae believe Nistelrooy got slagged?? Fergie obviously saw something in him to keeps tabs on him even when he was recovering from a long term knee injury at PSV.

The guy is, IMO, my perfect centre forward up there with Alan Shearer. Big and strong, great finisher and good ability at holding up the ball and bringing others into the game..

I laugh when people say certain players flourished because the others around him made them.

Big clubs buy players or blood youngsters because they think they are good enough and can enhance the team.

Yes, there are failures but that`s football and players who stay the distance and prove their worth done it on their own accord.

Here's one though Thommo: Chris Armstrong. Or how about Stuart Nethercott or Dean Austin? Or, for that matter, Gomes or Staltieri... or Paolo Tremezanni! A Spurs messageboard greeted his arrival with the words:

"Tottenham Hotspur are delighted to announce the signing of Justino Edinborghio from AC **** Poorio..."

PEOPLE ARE FORGETING DIEGO FORLAN!

he was crap at Man United. He's proved himself at Villareal and Athletico though so i think he's a good player, he probably just went to United at the wrong time.

As for Liam Miller never playing for Celtic, he was a regular for them at the beginning of the season, then he signed for Man Utd and they got annoyed at that and left him out the team, nothing to do with football

Xabi Alonso.

I think he's s****. Maybe that's just because I'm a blue? Who knows.

Xabi Alonso is without doubt one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. One of the reasons why Liverpool are 2nd in the league.

Haha - they're all players from when I was growing up. Tremezzanni!! Dean Austin was also the utter pits, although Spurs have never been shy of signing absolutely hellish players as long as I can remember.

Chris Armstrong actually scored quite a few goals for Spurs and Palace (a quick glance at Wiki says about 100 in 260-ish appearances), so I'll let him off, but the rest are horror shows.

At the moment, Gomes looks like he could take the biscuit though. Appalling player.

Let's not forget Gary Doherty and Ramon Vega, though - you should know all about Doherty, Shaun? Equally as awful in defence and up front - a bit like Kevin James.

controversial one - Joe Hart, totally hyped as some sort of top EPL keeper, dont rate him at all.

Same goes for Glen Johnson for me.

:1132:

He's one of the best right backs in Britain.

My brother's a Tottenham fan - and a particularly devoted one when he was growing up in the 90s. I used to wind him up endlessly about what Sugar, Francis and Graham were doing to the club (though I do secretly have a soft spot for Spurs, and would love to see them finally break through in the next year or two). So I remember the 'mare Austin had in the 1995 FA Cup semi-final; and I also recall my bro stumbling through the front door in exhausted despair after a 2-1 home defeat to Leicester in 1996/7. He started yelling about Nethercott - then broke down in tears. We've all been there, haven't we?

The hilarious thing about Vega was the way he did OK in Scotland: that didn't do the SPL's credibility much good down south, believe me! ;) And as for Ginger Pele... with Dejan Stefanovic out for the rest of the season, he's probably now our best defender. But he's still awful! Indeed, you could probably trace the club's seemingly endless decline to his signing for us as an auxiliary striker (!) early in our EPL season, while Malky Mackay was idiotically released. Troubled times at Carrow Road... :(

One other thing. It really doesn't help Gary Doc's cause that, when you watch him in the flesh, I swear he looks like he's about eighty-three!

Denis Irwin

Rio Ferdinand

Ruud Van Nistelrooy

David Beckham

There is not a team in the world who wouldn't take any of these at their peak.

I can only presume an anti Man U bias here.

I suppose it depends on your definition of a big team but I always thought that Peter Ramage at Newcastle was murder.

Winston Bogarde - four first team starts for Chelsea in a 4 year contract & on ?40k a week.

Ali Dia - claimed to be George Weah's cousin, Souness signed him on a months loan for Southampton without having seen this fraudster play.

Seth Johnson

There was a story that during Leeds worst period of financial wastage that Johnson and his agent turned up for signing talks. I think initially they were looking for ?10k a week however Leeds started at ?20k. Player and agent looked at each other in disbelief which Ridsdale took to mean not enough. Leeds then upped their offer to ?30k which followed the same routine whereby Ridsdale made his final offer of ?40k! Is it any wonder Leeds are now in the sh*tter?

When was the last time Heskey scored?

As long as he doesnt come back to Liverpool I have nothing to worry about!

Heskey has done everything but score for England recently. He's not a natural goalscorer true, but what he offers to teams is massively under-rated and largely un-noticed by many. Heskey is a very good footballer.

Tim Howard, Fabian Bartez, Titus Brambel, Damien Duff, Maluda, Phil Nevile, David Beckham, Darren Flecher, Quinton Fortune, Michael Mole ect . . .

 Beckham? I hope you are kidding.

This thread has certainly been a good barometer for gauging how much I'm going to pay attention to some posters' opinions in future.

Wayne Bridge, David Beckham, Denis Irwin, Gary Neville, Emile Heskey and John Terry are my highlights. Chucklevision.

Terry is a very good defender but he is massively over-rated by many. He's not world class as some would have you believe and he's an absolute ****** as well.

I have always thought Rio Ferdinand MUST be providing other "sevices", I mean he is total ****e! Whenever Man U let one in guess who usually is at fault? I've never understood WHY he gets a game with them. Jackie Charlton years ago was another, although explained due to his super famous brother.

Best central defender in the Premier League. A million miles better than Terry. I was disgusted when Terry originally got the captaincy ahead of Rio. Rio is a complete defender. He has everything in his game.

Liam Miller at Man Utd.

Luther Blissett at AC Milan.

Agreed on Miller. I have absolutely no idea how he ended up at Old Trafford.

Xabi Alonso.

I think he's s****. Maybe that's just because I'm a blue? Who knows.

;) Must be. He's quality.

Give that man a medal! I agree with everything you've said, especially on Ferdinand and Terry. I was raging when Rio didn't get the captaincy; and Terry, while possessing frightening levels of commitment and being built like a brick you-know-what, was only ever international class. Definitely not world class.

David Bellion at man utd.

Chris Sutton at Chelsea.

Jason McAteer at Liverpool.

Franny Jeffers at Arsenal.

BTW since when have Newcastle been a "Big Club"? Granted, they have wasted obscene amounts of money but they have never sustained any sort of level of success to warrant such a title.

It's like calling Hibs "Round-Robin specialists"!

Not fully in the spirit of the thread, but I watched the Werder Bremen vs. Cologne match with a couple of German mates yesterday, and seeing Kevin McKenna trying to mark Diego made me chuckle.

I like the lad, but whoever gave him the number 23 shirt must have been taking the pish.

Still, bet he's happier playing against the likes of Bremen and Bayern Munich than being a utility man against the likes of Kilmarnock.

For the particularly hard of thinking, despite it being said about 16 times already in the thread - I WAS BEING SARCASTIC WHEN I SAID THAT VAN NISTELROOY WAS HALF THE PLAYER CARL CORT WAS!!

Deadly serious for a moment, though - Paul Scholes is gash, always has been.
