They are nice words from Joanna Cherry, she's a class act and always has been.

Pretty pathetic to use his death to have a go at others but expected from her.

Some of the comments on here are a disgrace. I did not share his political ambitions but in a democracy he had the right to express these and seek independence for the country he loved, just as others had the right to reject it. He was a committed Jambo who helped greatly in our hour of need but first and foremost he was a human being who, in his passing, deserves basic decency

people can remember him however they like. Zero obligation to fawn over him

RIP Alex

Scottish independence was taken seriously because of his charismatic leadership and disciplined message. A galaxy away from what the movement has become. Picture unrelated.

RIP.  A man who dedicated his life to what he believed in. Even though I didn’t share that belief, respect to him for his love for Scotland. True passion for his country RIP

Heart of Midlothian Football Club is for all. It is not politically or religiously affiliated and it would be quite inappropriate for it to officially sanction a round of applause either before or during a match for a once prominent politician who has never held a post at the club. The same goes for supporters who wish to mark his passing. Politics is divisive and should be kept out of football; if people want to pay their respects then that is fine, but a football match is not the place.

No , disagree . He was once the democratically elected leader of our country . He was also a Hearts supporter . He deserves applause . Other clubs will do it at the weekend and it would look pretty weird if it did happen at the club he supported and helped save

Well said. I did not agree with his political views but did respect many things about him.

He was the first minister of our country. Despite the embarrassment when the queen died it was right to acknowledge it. Football is part of the community and the country. Nothing wrong with showing respect.

Indeed . I was able to do it when she died and I look forward to doing it now that he has . It would only be a small minority of brain dead xenophobics and bigots who would try and disrupt it , but they stand out more during a silence . Easily drowned out during an applause

Yep. I prefer applauses for that reason.

Alex was always inspiring to listen to and will be sorely missed.

Helped Hearts out during the administration process and was a PHM.

RIP.

Unless the SFA issues an instruction I would be very surprised if any other clubs mark his passing.

Christ, the man has only been dead a few wee hours!

Whether you loved him or loathed him, agreed or disagreed with his politics, believed or disbelieved what his lawyer said, for God’s sake give Mr Salmond the respect he deserves on this sad day, the day of his passing.

Plus, yes he was a fellow Jambo, but he was also a human being and that alone should allow him the decency he deserves.

RIP Mr Salmond

He died in a small country who successfully and peacefully gained their independence . He would enjoy the irony of that I think .

I wasn't happy with the RT thing but I was always impressed by how intelligent he was and how easily he could cut through the crap with his arguments. A sad loss to Scottish politics, and I hope that Alba successfully carry on his legacy.

Bit of a shock.

An old school politician that could lead his party. Not many of his gravitas left in Scotland or indeed the UK

He achieved so much getting the basically marginalised small SNP into Government and then to the Referendum. He always wanted what was best for Scotland. He tried to get an option for Devo Max on the Referendum showing it wasn't independence or nothing.

I feel strongly about  how he was treated in regard to his trial etc. Its not the time and there will be much more on that in the months to come. I do believe his reputation will be strengthened when all the information comes to light.

But he already deserves his place as a great of Scotland.

I agree with you.  We shouldn’t have had one for the Queen or the Pope either.  Keep all that shite out of football.

Anyway RIP to a fellow Jambo.

We had one for Sven Ericsson so be shocked if we didn’t have a minutes applause for Alex. Don’t think we could have a minutes silence as a bit like the Queens  wouldn’t be observed

If we have one it should be for him being a Hearts fan rather than as former FM.  But it will still be viewed as being political so you’re right, a minute’s silence would be a disaster.

Alex Salmond was a friend of my parents and he used to pop into their shop in Linlithgow whenever he visited his parents to buy his quarter of sweeties.  I used to deliver the messages to his mum on a Saturday morning.

He loved an audience and loved a debate, especially with folk who had just popped in to the shop. It's just how he was. Some folk would say he came across as being loud and arrogant, but I think he was just passionate.

You could always find him in the bookies or in Cabrellis the chip shop in Linlithgow.

As Fire at the Disco said in an earlier post, he was a good Linlithgow man, and even presented Linlithgow Rose with the Scottish Junior Cup when they won it at East End Park in 2007. RIP Mr Salmond.

Former First Minister, and Jambo. Minutes applause entirely appropriate.

Hear, hear.  👍    Regardless of which side of the indy debate anyone was on, it was obvious just how impressive Alex was in his oratory, passion  and  reasoning.  Very sharp brain too, and clever in his put-downs of opposing  political viewpoints.  Yet he managed to  build real friendships with some political foes  - some of whom shared the stage at his Fringe shows.   Easily the best politician Scotland has produced, and one of the best Westminster has ever  seen.   And a great Hearts man too.   Could be wrong, but I believe he played a part in supporting Bryan Jackson when he was ready to contact the Ubig administrators  with Ann Budge's offer.

His passing is especially sad since its only about 8 years since his father passed away.

Good post.  Alex had  studied the history of how several countries achieved independence - very sensible & clever guy.   Pretty  sure his adversaries like David Cameron & Gordon Brown  secretly admired him.

An intelligent politician, done his bit for independence, not sure a minutes silence is a great idea, applause maybe better.
I cant recall but did we have one for John Smith or Donald Dewar?

RIP Alex.
