Cranston Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 RIP Alex Salmond. A true Scotsman, who wore his heart on his sleeve. I have personally become more convinced of late, that the UK will not survive in its current format, and if Scotland does become independent, we'll require politicians of Alex's calibre to succeed.
Hagar the Horrible Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 Despite not agreeing with him politically I really liked him as a person a spokesman and a champion for Scotland he gave Scotland a voice He WON election after election in which he stood head and shoulders above his opponents, he smashed the Red wall up here. But He did get a referendum on independence that should be seen as a victory in its self, the result was not what he wanted but it was a bridge to far and the timings could not have been better. History on this former FM will be kind

You are factually correct https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_funerals_in_the_United_Kingdom#State_funerals_2 It seems like there is some nuance here - Folk saying he should are quoting that Thatcher did, but as you correctly point out, Churchill was the last. Thatcher got a "Ceremonial funeral". To be honest, I don't know if he should or shouldn't. He was a political titan that truly was a once in a generation talent. However, because of recent events, I think it would be better if his family were in full and complete control of his funeral, including those attending. That control would be lost if it was a state/ceremonial funeral and flatly, I don't think that is fair for his wife, sister, nieces and extended family that watched him being put through hell by those that claimed to be his friends. I do not want to see those that wronged him and conspired to destroy his reputation, legacy & rob him of his freedom given the opportunity to weasel their way into his send off.

It is not politically or religiously affiliated and it would be quite inappropriate for it to officially sanction a round of applause either before or during a match for a once prominent politician who has never held a post at the club. The same goes for supporters who wish to mark his passing. Politics is divisive and should be kept out of football; if people want to pay their respects then that is fine, but a football match is not the place. the guy helped save the club - should get a minutes applause pre kick-off the announcer guy rather than referring to him as a politician can just refer to him as a human a hearts supporter and someone who helped save the club apart from the fact that lots of other political and religious people get acknowledged at football matches but that’s another debate
