Denmark, Romania, Greece, Georgia, San Marino and Austria the worst of a bad lot in my book.

Not sure why Austria are so popular. It's shiiiiiiiiiiiiite.

Oot, Oot, Oot, Oot, Oot, In.

5/6

Got Iceland wrong.

Still, called 9 out of the 11 losers correctly this week. It's like I've seen Eurovision before.

Spain keeping up their long tradition of being completely shite.

No idea why people in Spain are obsessed with the music from the south - it's shite and just involves wailing and clapping out of time

How lucky were we to get 2nd. Ryder has a big personality but that song last year was average in my view anyway

Zelensky been told to bolt from the contest. He was hoping to make a speech.  But it was classed as " too political ".

It just feels wrong that people and  countries are eliminated in semi finals.

But anyway it is what it is. For similar motives to last year's winner, I'll predict UK to win.

Fair play Liverpool doing it well.

The Jazz Emu

Mae Muller just has something.

Can’t put my finger on it, but it’s definitely there.

I’m a little bit besotted I think.

36 acts times 3 minutes each. Use 2 stages to allow a 20 second turnaround. Under 2 hours then an hour for the voting.

If Ukraine hadn't won the sympathy vote the UK would have won by a country mile.  It was easily the best song in last year's contest, and one of the best entries the UK has ever produced.

I think you'll be disappointed! It's a good song. One of my favourites this year.

It is but in a good way, kinda camp goth metal that reminds me of a couple of bands I liked when I was a teenager. It'll likely end up somewhere in the middle of the pack.

Don't think there's any really obvious candidates for nul points, lots of mediocre guff but nothing that is so shit it stands out.

I remember some murmuring from Spain about the votes from some countries that were cancelled by the EBU because of “irregularities” and replaced by votes determined by votes from countries with similar voting patterns.

Spain was only 7 (seven) points behind the U.K. and felt that they could have taken second place.

The landslide for Ukraine possibly stopped a lot more searching questions about the replacement votes.

Anyway, what’s up with Ireland recently?  Only 2 finals out of the last 10?  Is it falling out of favour? RTE not wanting the hassle?  Soul-searching about the regular failure to qualify?

This was the last major voting scandal.

For a semi final and only for the jury votes.

A very strange bunch of 6 nations choosing to collude, not really a regional bloc.

Azerbaijan, Georgia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania and San Marino are not the first nations that spring to mind when you think of voting blocs.

Azerbaijan, Romania and Georgia refused to accept the aggregated scores and had their results read out by the Eurovision head honcho.

All nations involved quietly dropped their objections.

The semis this year were 100% public vote.

This might seem petty, or even a bit xenophobic, but not the intention. I think that there should a rule that the songs must be performed in the language of the country the singer(s) are representing.

Eurovision has had language restrictions in the past, it's been changed several times.

1956-65; no restrictions
66-72; language must be one of the official languages of that nation
73-76; no restrictions
77-98; language must be one of the official languages of that nation
99-now; no restrictions

We've been off our game for years.  There are all sorts of theories as to why, but I think it's not that we've become crap lately, more that we got spectacularly lucky back in the 90s when it was a much smaller event than it is today, and much easier for countries with English as a first language to do well.  Ireland and the UK have fared far worse in the competition ever since the language restrictions were completely relaxed in 1999.

We also participate in Junior Eurovision, and oddly enough we don't send English songs.  The national song competition is run by TG4, the Irish-language TV station, and there are no English-language songs in the competition.

One media head here was saying that RTÉ have the national song contest too closely linked with one of its major light entertainment TV shows.  Because of that, he reckons the contest is a bit of a closed shop even though officially it's open to everyone.

Yes, the 2nd list adds up to 25 years.....Ukraine had English and native languages in their songs in 2004 and 2016.
No contest took place in 2021.

I'd guess that a fair percentage of the French-language wins came between 1956 and the mid-1970s.
