Point I’m making is you wouldn’t compare Jordan Henderson to Thiago for example or Scott Brown with Rogic.

They play different roles within the middle of the pitch.

Devlin gets a lot of stick on here. Statistically he was the best CDM in the league last year. He’s only going to get better.

If a celtic fan I'd definitely compare brown and Rogic if I was choosing 2 or 3 midfielders from a choice of 5 or 6.

You need different types, but imo Beni also  tackles and wins the ball back and is much better in use of the ball.

Winning the ball is pointless if you give it away or give a foul away moments later.

I Wasn't really comparing players for the sake of it either, I was Making the point about the Beni being the most complete midfielder at the club.

Even he's not the finished article but he's the most complete and polished midfielder we have.

If folk want to take that as a criticism of the other midfielders then fair enough but Halliday, Haring and Devlin although all have strengths as a midfielder they all also have big weaknesses. I don't think that's really a debate Tbh.

Beni is the most complete and imo should be the standard we want going forward.

Both him and Devlin were improving before their injuries as well.

😭

Ahead of McGregor and Lundstrum ? I’d love to see that list

Lundstrum couldn’t kick his own arse until about February time.

A video I watched on TikTok showed the stats in one of those graphs and Devlin was well clear in things like tackles, interceptions etc. I’ve went and looked for it but can’t track it back down. Will post if I find it.

Not sure why so many stick the boot into Devlin on here and say he isn't good enough. For me he was impressive in almost every game he played, he dropped off a little then got injured. Had we had a fit Devlin and Beni at the end of the season the cup final would have been completely different. His game is all about energy and getting about the pitch. His hamstring clearly restricted that at the end. Even in the few minutes in the semi final he was the only one who put in some kind of challenge near the end. He instantly lifts the crowd and the players around him. Got to remember he is still young and will definitely improve with a pre-season behind him. The same can hopefully be said of Atkinson who is raw but has bags of potential to do well.

He played CB in a 3 against Brora and hasn’t since. That should let you know what RN thinks of him there.

He actually played CB in a game towards the end of last season, albeit only the last 15 or 20 minutes... and he looked great. Same game Sibbick got moved to RWB and also looked great. Can't remember who we played but I'm sure it was right around the split or just before.

IMO Halliday would play for every team regularly below us, you seem to be under valueing him or over estimating the quality of the top flight.

Agree last part, but maybe he doesn't want to do that and it would be a punt as he's not played at centre half regularly for about 3/4 years at least.

I doubt the teams below would be willing to pick up his wages. Don't know what he's on, but if it is too much for the teams below us, then should it really be what we spend on a squad players?

No one who isn’t connected to Halliday or Hearts knows what he’s on for sure, but I don’t think it’s a hefty wage. I think it’s starters money at Livingston but nowhere near the top of our wages.

I think Halliday enjoys being at a winning club, enjoys training, and has the perfect mentality to stay ready and come on when needed. I was after his head after the straight red earlier this season but he atoned for it by playing everything except keeper with no complaints.

Don’t think squad players mean cheap players.

Anyone who has a go at Devlin is not worthy of a response. The wee man works his socks off in midfield unlike Mr Halliday who is the luckiest player in Scotland to be handed a 2 year extended contract when he should of been freed.

Halliday staying and Haring leaving is going the wrong way for me

I hope Beni's injury is one from which he can fully recover.  On reflection I'm sure we would have made a much better fist of the cup final if all our players had been fully fit.  You generally need that kind of advantage to stand a good chance against the OF.

Very much hope we are able to resove the contract issue with Haring.  He wants to stay and I hope he does.

Just beginning to look forward with enthsism to the new season.  Neilson is desperate to win a trophy and that's wxactly the right attitude.  League Cup would be a great start.

He's on ex OF wages, I'd be really surprised if he was cheap.

But it doesn't really matter, he's a hearts player and will be for the foreseeable

Ex-OF wages but signed to a club in the Championship in the middle of COVID and signed an extension this season when he was decidedly a reserve. But who knows, and as you say, with his fresh contract, he's not going anywhere and he plays for the jersey when he's on the pitch.

Good business to sort the following season if big Pete continues to play well - stops this thread from happening next year 👍

Thought it would have been a bit longer of a deal myself but pleased with that.

Do we know if the option is for the team or for the player?

Unsure it's a  unfair comparison-they are both midfielders. However, I agree they are different players.

Beni imo works just as hard as Devlin, he just does it differently.

Running about daft is not want I want in a midfielder, they must have  quality and composure on the ball.

My original point imo still stands, Beni is our nearest player to a complete midfielder and Haliday, Haring, Devlin who I all like and do have thier strengths also have big weakness in their midfield game.

This is why the work well together as a team. The differences they have complement each other.

Glad Haring is staying but hopefully we get a ball carrying type in or we simply won't improve much, especially as Beni Likley won't be fully fit until the start of the year.

IMO, although good players to hav-e Haring and Devlin aren't good enough over half a season if looking to take on the OF and make an impression in Europe.

😭

If we filled our midfield with Beni's we would have a poor midfield. It's about a blend. I agree with you that he is our most complete but he needs a box to box and creative alongside. If by standards  you mean of equal quality in their specialisms,  I would agree.

Not sure a midfield of 2 Benis would be worse than Haring and Devlin.

Opinions tho.

I like Haring, Halliday and Devlin. They all bring something to the team but v better players they simply aren't good enough as imo their weaknesses are exposed.

We won't be giving the OF sleepless nights using them for half a season, that's for sure.

I'm hopeful we get a good midfielder in over the summer and imo Beni is the standard to match or better.

Not easy.
