BRB must be visiting 😂 In all seriousness, I don't think CG will suddenly not be able to play all the games he did last season but with the extra games plus international duty, he may want a few games off as the first half of the season is going to be the busiest it has been in years. So backup keepers will defo play more games next season and I'm not sure that Stewart is the answer. With that being the case, I think signing a GK under say 25 wouldn't be a bad option as you could get someone if decent quality/potential who also is happy to learn from a keeper of CG'S quality. The club will likely know when he is planning to retire and they will also probably have him in as a coach off the back of that (or even player/coach, as GK is one of the few places that works) He plays from Aug to early November then gets a month+ off. Plays again mid-Dec to end of season. Worst case is he needs a short break in the March timeframe.

Stone goes out on loan and gets game time. Heres the problem with that: Liam Kelly is in the prime of his career, he's 26 and in the Scotland team regularly. He's playing week in week out and a club down South is going to eventually take notice. Motherwell are also paying him a very decent wage apparently too. He's not going to give that up to sit on the bench to Gordon who at 39 is playing the best football of his career and will likely keep going until something stops him. For Liam Kelly to give all that up to play 2nd fiddle and maybe play 5 games a season, we'd need to pay him more than we're paying Gordon. It would be a waste of time for him, and a massive waste of money from us when we could tie those funds up with a player that is going to play every week. Its altogether a wild suggestion Bongo. Jamie MacDonald on the other hand is tested at this level (unlike Ross Stewart), he's got bags of experience and has worked with Gordon when he was younger, trained together before Gordon joined Celtic and knows what it means to play for the club so would throw everything and the kitchen sink at the few chances he would get. After Gordon and McLaughlin I think MacDonald is probably one of the best shot stoppers we've had in recent years. We're not going to get a Zander Clarke or Liam Kelly type player to sit on our bench for 95% of the season because these players can pick literally any league 1 or 2 club and play every week or get paid a tidy packet to sit on the bench in the Championship. Your sub keeper is never going to be an exciting signing. Someone steady who can step in for up to 5 games if there is (god forbid) an injury. If Gordon suddenly retired I'd 100% back signing someone like Kelly, McCrorie or Clarke, but those kinds of players at this level don't sit on the bench. And to those who say send them on loan, we did with Stone and he hardly played for Partick because their other keeper went on a crazy run of form, so the B team allows them to be played. I suppose its a bit of a balancing act. If our younger keepers can go out and get experience with other teams who have older, better defenders and we can have an older, experienced keeper providing that experience to a young defence it would seem worthwhile, it might even be more beneficial. biffy
Liam Kelly is massively overrated pulls off some good saves and is decent with his feet but regularly makes mistakes. He also won’t be a number 2. I’ve always wanted us to sign Zander Clarke but he won’t either. That’s why it’s such a hard position to fill.
