Underrated Hearts players

I’ll kick off with Prince Buaben.

Got so much stick but we seemed to win more games when he was involved. Quite versatile player as well.

Good player for us.

John Millar

Second post in and that's mine too.

Solid, tough tackling midfielder that can pitch in with 10 goals a season. Haven't seen many of those over the years.

Robbie Neilson.  Solid, dependable and did the simple things well

I never appreciated robbie til he left and we suddenly had to defend loads of crosses from that side.

Fair enough. I really liked Kenny Black back then. A right dirty **** that every team needed.

Was very good until his injury in the Championship season. He came back once we were in the Prem if I remember correctly, and was just too far behind the team to keep up. Liked him, but he was never the same, and too inconsistent after that.

Correct.  He never messed about and it was rare for a cross to come int from his position out wide.  He was physically fit and did his job.  Didn;t look to make hero runs up the line but defended well

100%. Loved him. Done so much for the team, particularly during the Cathro era. Only one who looked like he gave a ****.

Not obvious considering some of the stick he got but I'm giving a shout to Gavin Reilly as well. 14 competitive starts and we only lost 1, scored in 13 of them, and scored 2 or more in 10 of those 14. Never stopped running, made himself available, stretched defences. I liked him and thought he was very underrated.

Are you sure you have the right guy?

You seem to be saying he scored at least 23 goals in 14 matches???

We must have got £millions for him?

Oh no, we didn't - we loaned him to Dunfermline

Jim Bett wasn’t underrated.

Even at the age he was when joining Hearts it was obvious how good a player he was.

It was the first time in my life I ever envied Aberdeen.

Sandy Clark. The perfect foil for Robbo

The perfect foil for Robbo, (according to Robbo  himself), was the underrated Jim Hamilton.

He was great for us. Particularly in our memorable 1988 UEFA cup run.

Julien Brellier.

It was due to him holding and covering the midfield that made Hartley and Skacel so prolific in attack.

A lot on here at the time slated Brellier, saying he brought nothing to the team. A liability some said.

88/89

Yep. I seen him score in Dublin and Vienna.

I was also in Munich.

I seen some sights on that run that shaped me as a Hearts fan forever.

Especially in Dublin 😬

Kenny Black never had and would often take a pass from a player to ease the pressure on them even though he may not have been in a better position. A tremendous team player who team mates would often talk highly of. I loved him and Whittaker (another player who took a bit of stick) as they would always give their all. Black had a sweet left foot.
