If you die 29 days after being diagnosed then you don't count so numbers are now lower, fact Sorry reading the thread backwards to catch up. That is nonsense If you die of or with coronavirus after 28 days of testing positive it counts as a coronavirus death. If you die of something else, unrelated to Coronavirus it doesn't. Same as in Scotland. I stand to be corrected but I don't think the England figures are as restricted as Scotland where only confirmed coronavirus cases are counted. I think a death certificate mention still counts in England. (The discussion does illustrate why any very precise comparison between death numbers in different jurisdictions is impossible.) I understood it was the way XB52 stated, that's why "nobody recovered from Covid-19" in England. Crazy if true. They changed this recently. As you know, Scotland produces 2 figure. The ONS (I think) one is the one where Covid-19 is mentioned on a death certificate and the one Sturgeon gives which is only confirmed cases. Let's see how autumn goes. We've had a good summer so people can enjoy socialising outdoors in beer gardens, parks etc. However I'm of the belief we'll have proven treatments to combat spikes among the vulnerable come winter, as various trials of treatments have shown much promise. But it doesn't mean I don't also believe we should be cautious until we know we can treat it reliably for sure. Otherwise hospital operations will be impacted again. That's a fair summary of where we are. I think fears about a "2nd wave" have been more realistically reassessed as the local spikes that we are seeing now. I think the virus is very much controllable and, as recent data suggests and evidenced by frontline Italian doctors, is likely weakening as it mutates. I think the justification for daily Scottish briefings is not there and figures could easily be announced on the website without the daily Sturgeon Show. You are right though imo, we still need to exercise caution...but also realism.

Victorian
There are a few reasons to go some way towards the belief that it might be becoming less transmissible / infectious, as well as less potent in the severity of illness. With the ever increasing return to normal activities and interactions, as well as the published R0 value being above 1 and the various sizeable clusters, it may have been reasonable to expect the overall incidence to be higher than it is. The powers that be would be quite right to suppress the belief that this is happening. The ongoing belief that it's still dangerous will help massively to drive it back to micro levels.
