I don't think the caution is regarding vaccinations, just the case numbers (fewer tests so there is a batch missing - borne out by the positivity stat)

Dennis Reynolds
Fantastic vaccination numbers and good to see case numbers still dropping. Can see a phased return to normality starting in March. Just need to be cautious and not go too wild too quickly.

Today's test total was 9,479. The equivalent figure from last Sunday was 14,163, but the test figures have been declining by about 6% in the last week or so, which would indicate (on this digital back of an envelope calculation) that we're missing roughly just under 4,000 tests, an extra 40%, and applying that percentage to the cases would mean that we would be missing roughly about another 230 cases. That would still mean that we're heading in the same direction (downwards trend in case numbers; last Sunday 1,003, today about 810-820), just not as dramatically as the incomplete figures would have suggested. Warning: Very rough calculations involved in the above.

My guess/ extrapolation is that the data which is missing is often from a particular source (ie possibly the 'in the post' tests, and that hese have a slightly lower positivity rate Can't be bothered going back and running the numbers on that, so just an observational hunch

My guess/ extrapolation is that the data which is missing is often from a particular source (ie possibly the 'in the post' tests, and that hese have a slightly lower positivity rate Can't be bothered going back and running the numbers on that, so just an observational hunch Yup, I've never been able to figure it out myself. The low test result days, with connected higher positivity rates, are usually Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (or thereabouts) which leads to the conclusion that it is the results from weekend testing that are reduced. I thought that perhaps weekend tests were the normal "I think I have Covid!" tests, whereas weekday tests also included routine testing, and that was why the positivity rate was higher for the results of weekend tests. I'm probably way wrong on that though. I just ignore the daily positivity rates and look at the 7-day rates where it all seems to even out. Footballfirst
15 minutes ago, redjambo said: Yup. It seems that the shortfall is primarily test results with yesterday's specimen date. There are only 17 positive cases dated 6 February in the national figures, when you might expect 200 or more. The total number of tests recorded was 455. She checked out all the local appointments diary for an alternative venue but no appointments available. She promised to leave a note on the system but I will try the Web chat facility which for some reason wasn't available yesterday. I'm sure it will get sorted but she won't be the only ones without a car who will be given a 'DRIVE THROUGH APPOINTMENT' 😁 You would think as its called a drive thru it just means cars. Footballfirst
Although the headline case number is up to 928 today, it was expected because of the artificially low figure reported yesterday which was affected by a delay in reporting test results. The average over the last two days was 756, which is an improvement on the corresponding days last week when the two day average was 926. So we should open up fully now because variants mean vaccines won't work anyway, but things will be better because vaccines are working? Lockdown is suppressing the new variants, so for that purpose it is working, the vaccine will start effecting the virus more significantly every day from now onwards, if we open up fully right now then the variants situation gets much worse very quickly. If you think that lockdowns are causing more harm than good that's a separate argument, but nothing to do with variants or vaccines. No once the main groups are vaccinated ie those over 50 we should then open up . I found this somewhere : “ It seems clear to me this nonsense will never end, unless we collectively decide it ends. Mass, peaceful non-compliance and civil disobedience is the only way out. Open your schools and businesses from tomorrow and let's get on with our lives. The total number of people who died under 45 years old from Covid-19 in Scotland’s hospitals in 2020 (till 24 Dec), with no underlying health conditions was TWO. Another 28 died who had comorbidities. The number of deaths from other, treatable, causes continue to go through the roof, ditto suicides. “

As far as we know, yet, the vaccines don't actually stop you getting the virus (they don't provide "sterilising immunity"), they just allow the body to fight the virus better, reducing symptoms. Vaccinated people will still be able to transmit the virus, although according to the following article, "There are some early hints that certain vaccines might be able to reduce transmission, even if they can’t eliminate it entirely." https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210203-why-vaccinated-people-may-still-be-able-to-spread-covid-19 Anyway, I am in no way an expert on virology, and welcome correction on anything I write on the subject. Do read the article I posted though as hopefully you will find it pretty interesting. Id also imagine that the immune system response is a large reason why some have died soon after the vaccination. Thank you both for these posts to answer my questions, and a really helpful article Red 👍 Apologies for the delay in reply and for now setting the thread back a few days.
