When I was wee my local chemist had a set of scales like that. 2p a shot. Once you stepped off the dial would go baclk to zero and the next person would have to put in 2p. We werent well off so when we went to get weighed we would have to wait until one of our siblings stood on it before we could get off so that we could all get weighed for 2p. Could the thing in the photo be an outdoor version? Dont think i ever saw an outdoor one other than at farms to weigh animals.

Sharpie
It certainly looks like a weigh scale but they were never that I remember outside in the weather. Although there is snow on the ground it looks like there is a break in the stone edge where it is located and it could even be set into the ground permanently. It and purely suggestion may have been c onverted into a contemporary gate light or ornament. It is not in the confectionary garden but in the neighbours and may be something to do with a business there.
Carl Fredrickson
It was mentioned that it may be the entrance to the railway station - i would tend to agree with this or similar idea as it falls outwith the fences for both properties. To me it looks like a path between the houses leading somewhere and it could be a sign or notice related to wherever the path goes. What is the source of the photo - is it definitely in Edinburgh?
