Edinburgh Castle overlooks the Union Canal as it meanders into Port Hopetoun at Fountainbridge. Port Hopetoun was the Edinburgh terminus of the Union Canal. It was closed, along with Port Hamilton in 1922 as canal trade declined. The site was later developed as Lothian House.

Anyway here's a bit of Lothian Road for you

Remember the building that is where the Usher Hall is now?

well that's it getting taken down - unsure about the date in the description

Lothian Road School, demolition, 1910
Chrystal, Francis M
The board school on Lothian Road was also known as Cambridge Street School. It was one of the first board schools, built in 1880 and designed by Robert Wilson. It had a relatively short lifespan for a school building of this era though as it was demolished in 1910 to make way for the Usher Hall.

Shakespeare Pub just to the left

Love this picture, shows how claustrophobic those closes were, everyone on top of each other. Wouldn’t have liked wandering around those at night. Mind you, wouldn’t wander around any of the closes at night these days either.

Port Hopetoun

Couldn’t edit previous answer to this, meant there is a picture on here of that large building on the right of the picture.

Was working earlier, now I’ve had time to think, I did indeed put a picture of that up from the other side.
