Didn't May say it was a free vote last night?

Is it no longer the case now that they lost it?

One minister reported to have resigned on the spot.

Three line whip to vote against something they voted FOR about 30 minutes ago.

Pandemonium.

But the EU would have to agree surely before the deadline as that will also be their default position?

The He only way a No deal can be off is if a deal is agreed and the majority of the house in both camps will continue to vote against it.

Or a second referendum, which I would expect the EU would happily grant an extension to allow.

Yes to legislation. The EU must approve any extension. But the UK could cancel Article 50 unilaterally.

And the EU has basically said they won't grant an extension if it's just tea and cake with Theresa May ad nauseum.

I don’t think they will grant it but if the Gov cancels Article 50 then the ‘majority’ will lose their shit.

I think that is a mistake by May

That seems the only logical choice now.

Vote in

321-278 against No Deal

Effectively a defeat for government after whipping against it?

May says longer extension will mean European Parliament elections.

May is still effectively saying vote for her deal.

May deal coming back very soon.     ****ing tragic.

Which will be voted down again & again and the speaker will eventually have to put at stop to it surely?

It’ll be a No Deal on the 29th if she keeps flogging a dead horse, regardless out tonight.

Corbyn says they will try to find a compromise solution.

Time running out though which was part of May strategy in delaying vote last year.

I think its a disgrace. Without being 'political' snp are 3rd biggest party and should be treated with that respect.

They should have stayed. I think the reason is avoiding accusations of bias against Tories.

That was pretty disgraceful. The third largest party and the governing party of Scotland.

Sit down and shut up.

She specified that the extension motion was primarily technical and to enable her deal.    She washed her hands of responsibility of alternatives.    She's mentally ill.

I'm completely baffled as to what happens now.

I'll be honest. I've had a handle on a lot of this. But I don't quite understand what's happened tonight. No deal was always going to be voted down. Is the shock because some ministers abstained from voting against no deal. Idiots guide would be welcomed!!

Parliament has refused to ratify the deal done with the EU.

Parliament has also refused to ratify a No Deal situation.

The EU is not shifting one inch.

Either May somehow gets her deal through in the next few days, we beg for an extension to Article 50 (which we would need to convince the EU the reason for) or we revoke Article 50.

They're all pointing out the illegitimacy of her not accepting these results.     Open rebellion against her contempt of parliament.         Unprecedented political corruption in the mother of parliaments.

Don't think it controversial - he is old school. Principled with personality. But agree May is bordering on the manic. Has to go

Someone just said verbatim what her motion is for and she sat there shaking her head in denial.      Just wow.

She wont even allow them to know what's going on in house business.

Ill try

Govt put forward a motion to prevent a no deal on 29 March but only then.

An amendment was passed on the motion, which was approved which states no deal will not happen ever.

Therefore the original govt motion was amendment to rule out no deal for ever. The govt did want this so whipped against it amendment motion to stop it being passed.

The whip failed spectacularly and motion passed which in theory rules out a no deal.

A lot of tories ignored the whip. Which is a big deal for many reasons.

Cheers. That makes as much sense as any of this dusterluck does

It's unprecedented.     Utter madness.     Completely overt dishonesty and dictatorship.     The MPs are completely bamboozled and starting to call her out.

She'll get one more,  at least.

But the shit is going to hit the fan in the media and maybe elsewhere.

I don't completely follow the politics -- is a confidence vote in the cards? How could anyone in good faith say they had confidence in her government?

Tomorrow's bonkers vote is to set a deadline for passing May's deal (yes, the exact same one) by next wednesday.

If the deal is passed, the Govt will beg for an Article 50 extension until June 30th.

If the deal is not passed, the Govt will beg for a longer extension and start preparing for the EU elections.

Feck knows what happens if this motion to set a deadline is blocked.

Sorry for being thick but if no agreement is reached in Parliament / with the EU, do we still leave on the 29th with no deal?

Yes as things stand

Need a law passed by Parliament to change that

In theory yes.    May appears to be ignoring these votes.
