The poker thread...

Finished 4th last night, thought I was on for the Saturday/Monday double of wins but wasn't to be.

Was just about in the chip lead when pick up QQ 4 handed. Raise it to 24k (blinds 4/8). BB called me with K6 for a over a third of his stack. King high he bets and i put him in. Was not impressed to say the least.

Was left with 18k, which I put in next hand with A5 of diamonds and the same bawsack called me with K2 of spades. I hit 2 pair and he flushes on river.

Nothing worse than playing people who do not have a clue, or even worse, think they do. Reference slow play, not something I do often I have to admit, I like going in for the kill, but if you don't vary your style and raises then I think you become too predictable.

Wow. Just had the ultimate cold deck hand on WillHill this afternoon.

Had 67 clubs in the BB playing 15p25p.

guy raised it to 75p, couple of calls. I call.

Board by the river is 27626.

My opponent was holding 77.

Un-be-liev-able.

Cold Deck? Playing online last night, down to about 1100 chips from an initial stack of 1500, blinds are 50,100.

On the button, look down at Kings- Under the Gun limps, cut-off raises, I reraise and both UTG and cut-off call.

Flop comes K,J,2 to give me top set.

UTG raises, Cut-off calls and I push all in- UTG calls and Cut-off folds. UTG turns Jacks so I'm laughing, top set against second set.

River comes another Jack...

I just booked a jolly to Las Vegas!

:)

No bad for some..... take me with you :P

Played the 5er re-buy last night (due to the top 5 all getting a seat at the Sunday ?150 game), came 8th. Some eejit raised all-in - he'd been raising with sh*te all night so I knew he had nowt, at best a rag ace - so I called with my KJ, he turns over K10. Hits runner runner on the turn and river for the straight. Annoyed to say the least.

Thats a bit of a pish beat like.

You reckon you might buy in direct to the big game?

Think I'm going to save my pennies to blow in Vegas from now on! Going to come home bankrupt.

Sexton Hardcastle

Was playing with 3 mates yesterday. Had two ?20 freeze outs, came second the first time and won the second so was up ?40 quid. We then decided it be wise to play 25/50p cash. i lost my ?40 profit fairly quickly so just dealt for a while. One of the boys, a pokerholic, was playing on tab so kept going out and buyng in for 20 quid. Eventually he went out again and bought in for 50 quid. He owed the pot ?90. The other 2 boys had bought in a few times and there was about 200 in the pot inc said "?90".

The big hand - all limps - Flop - 2 8 6 rainbow. Bet of ?2 , 3 calls. Turn - 6 clubs. Betting ?5, 3 calls. River - 5 clubs. One boy bets ?15, the next with who owes the pot goes all in for about ?35. after some thought the other boy goes all in for about ?60 and the original bet calls the all ins.

First guy had straigh, loosing about 50 quid, 3rd guy had nuts flush hit on the river breaking even or just under and the tit who owed the put had a full house on the turn winning around 140 quid, paying his 90 and taking a decent 50 quid profit. I was glad i stopped.

Who's heading up tonight?

I've had a full weekend of trance goodness so itching for a game.

Think I'll probably go. Played on Saturday and didn't do too well so could do with a decent game.

Apologies in advance- this will probably turn into a long post, but I really need to vent somewhere that people will understand, and I don't think Samaritans would be too patient with me...

For those that aren't aware, the Nuts poker league is a series of tournaments over 12 weeks at various pubs, with points being awarded each night according to how high you finish and a league being kept to find out who the overall winner is at the end of 12 weeks. With 80 points being awarded to a player for just turning up for a night and winners of a night likely to pick up at least 1000 points, imagine the drama when it comes down to the last night (tonight) with one player (me) only 2 points behind the league leader....

Realising that winning the league depended on me reaching the final table (only on reaching the final table does the points you earn for the night increase) and also finishing ahead of the league leader, I decided that my safest option was not only playing extremely tight, but making sure the rest of my table knew that was what I was doing- in case they were in doubt, I folded my Big blind to button raises of 3x both times in the first couple of laps around the table (9 handed) and didn't play a single hand in any other position. My biggest problem was when I started picking up hands...

The first hand I played must have been about the 20th hand dealt. I was in the Big Blind again with blinds 50,100 and 3 people have limped- I've got Aces. Not believing my luck (but also realising the risk with so many players) I raise it to 500 and get 2 callers. Flop comes 8,J,Q, first player checks, second player bets 400 (into a pot of 1750) and I push all in, happy to take the pot there- I wish I had, I got an immediate call and the initial raiser turns over 9,10 (off, not that that makes much difference...) for the flopped straight.... Leaves me with about 800 chips.

Second hand I played, about 7 or 8 hands later... In the small blind (blinds still 50,100), 5 limpers and I've got Kings.I Push and get 1 caller who turns A,8 (they were the big stack, but it's still definitely a loose call). Kings stand up and I'm up to 2200 chips.

Third hand, again about 7 or 8 hands later and I'm in the Big blind again... Blinds are now 100,200. 3rd Position raises to 500, button calls and I look down at Aces again. I push all in and get both players calling, initial raiser for all his chips and second caller (who won the first time I had Aces) has about twice my stack so will lose about half her chips. Initial raiser turns over Q,3 of Hearts and the Button turns over A,9 of Spades. Despite me hitting an Ace on the flop, unfortunately it's the ace of hearts and the initial raiser hits runner runner to give him the flush to beat my set of aces with his Q,3. This guy is an Australian tourist who's just turned up for the night looking for something to do, not interested in the league or who finishes where....

Because the last pot was won by the small stack, I won the sidepot and still have about 700 chips in the Small Blind- look down at A,K. There's only one caller (the muppet who called with Q,3) but when I push, the BB folds and he instacalls- any hopes that he's got a nonsense hand again are demolished when he turns over Kings. Of course the remaining King comes on the flop to really take the p'ss and give me the pair, but he's made his set and that's 4 hands played (and I didn't play any other hands other than the ones described), me out of the nights tournament and my 12 weeks hard work come to nothing...

Before tonight started, with the league being as it was I could have only dreamt about getting Aces or Kings 3 times in the space of 2 levels as you'd have thought it would have maximised my chance of winning the league. Unfortunately I lost while being an 82% favourite with my Aces each time and it seems I'd have been better off picking up 2,7 off each time and just folding, as the league leader went out not long after me. Poker makes you sick sometimes...

Apologies in advance- this will probably turn into a long post,

. Poker makes you sick sometimes...

I feel for you, some terrible outcomes.

Sounds like you strayed from your normal game play though which may have worked against you.

That first hand you played...would you not normally go all-in with aces against 3 limpers to take down the pot there and then or at least scatter the suited 10 J/ low pair holders? and hope to get called off any AK/KK/QQ

the other hands seem terrible luck.

Do you get any prize for 2nd in league? and what would 1st have got you?

it sure does, this may ease the pain!

I played 2 tourneys at same time on sat, reasonably deep into both ofthem and sitting well with chips.

1st exit....Me AQ off , him K9 suited...bit of raising pre flop, comes A T 5, I bet and he calls for the rest of his stack.....I actually thought it was a 'chip dump' he couldnt really think his K was good.....but of course it was!! turn K, river 9....and left with 650 chips with bb 300 and heading my way...out next hand.

ah but its not so bad still doing well in this other tourney...

2nd exit.. me KK, him 66 , flop rubbish, he puts me all in, turn blank, river 6

out both within a minute. to morons.so peeved im actually gonna change site.

Know what you're saying about going all in with Aces, but personally while I'd never (or rarely) slowplay them I still think pushing all in everytime might not be the best way to maximise your long term earnings- I had hoped that a 5x Big Blind raise would be enough to deter hands that really only had connector value! Obviously the second time it was always going to be a shove given that there had already been a raise and a call.

Second prize gets you a pat on the back- first gets a trophy. There's no cash incentive for winning the league, but there's a voluntary buy-in for each weekly tournament that sees you picking up a cash prize so because I've bought in every week and won quite a few times I'm well ahead for the season.

yeah , but its just that you had set your stall out with this 'im playing tight' persona....which would have been backed up with an all-in move on this occassion.......(perhaps)

so no trophy for the mantlepiece, but good effort all the same

Cheers! If you feel bad enough though bubbling two tournaments in a row, it's even more frustrating finishing 2nd in the league two seasons in a row to different winners! At least the last time the guy who won was miles in front thanks to 3 back to back tourney wins.

Good effort, some pretty brutal beats!

I know the feeling sadly, Literally the last 7 or 8 times i've had pocket kings ive been going home 5 minutes later...Including last night...Raise to 1200 (4x big blind) everyone folds and the small blind goes all in for about 1400, I call obv and she turns over K2! Looking good for me...flop comes all blanks , turn club, river club...She's hit runner runner flush...Spewing!

On a related note to the Nuts league, Is this the last week or is it on next week as well? What's the deal with the regionals? I qualified from the 3 Sisters last season but was away in the US all summer so missed them then. Do you just turn up and they have as list of qualifiers names or what? When are they this time?

First one was harsh, second hand the guy probably thought his 6s were good if it was a low flop, he was unlucky to come up against kks but got lucky on the river. Happens all the time mate, no point getting your knickers in a twist about it.

The season ends on the 30th of September so next Tuesday.

The place you play at will be allocated either the Sat or the Sun. If want to change the day you just email them. You just turn up on the day and they have a list of qualifiers.

The regionals are the 18th and 19th of October at the Circus Casino.

I cant go as am in London to see Porcupine Tree. Missing the Derby aswell that weekend. Gutted

Dont worry...I see it all the time, was more peeved that it came straight on top of the other mug in the other tourney, leaving me scratching my ass instead sitting in the top 10 in 2 decent tourneys.

Pretty bad luck there Andy. Unlucky.

Just had an annoying couple of hands online there.

Get Aces in the big blind on a pretty loose table, and get a walk!

Then the big one. I limp with 5's, only playing 15/25p. Guy raises it to 1 pound. Another guy re-raises it to 5! Another guy calls! So it's on me facing 4.75 more to call. I really wanted to but felt the original raiser might reshove and I didn't feel like calling 25 quid off with them. So, I fold, and as expected original raiser shoves in. Both players call.

It's QQ v AK v K9 in a ?60 pot.

Flop 575.

It doesn't matter what the result of the individual hands are. Its whether or not you played it correctly, given the information to hand.

In the long run you will win.

Now personally, I think this is a load of pap at the low levels we are playing at as everyone calls everything. All the blooming time. But I understand the concept at least.

Please go here to read about good and bad beats... Bad Beats

A bad beat of mine

A very very very good beat for me

And lots of good poker strategies here

Certainly isn't, it's even more relevent when your playing donkeys as you'll defo clean up in the long term.

I played my first proper tourney on Sunday. Have fecked around online and played against mates before however this was something different! Came 19 out of 50 and knocked out a former champ, for which i got 50 quid for doing. Now i know it was only a small tourney at a local pub however i really have a taste for this game now. Have been reading about the game all day at work for the past couple of days and have started playing for really small amounts on party poker.

So far i have learned to play tight yet aggressive when you have a hand, don?t try and slow play pocket aces/kings and never try and count on the turn or river card. Any more tips or hints would be greatly appreciated!

I know you are right. And as long as you play properly you should win in the long term.

I just find at the very low levels (5c/10c) NL.. Every bet you make is called. I'll only bet if I have the absolute nuts now, after the river. Its not ABC poker, its just the only way to really win. (by not losing everything to some donk with his K9 (suited of course)..

Agree with you there mate, when your playing donkeys then you just have to wait for the premium hands as they call down everything. It can get frustrating when they suck out with their ace rag but just got to stick with it. You see some shocking bad play at those levels, especially late on a Friday/Saturday night. Can be very profitable tho!!!

The best poker beat I've had was earlier this year in a WSOP weekly final on poker stars, it was the very last one so there was about 14,000 entering with the top 4 going to Vegas. It started at 1 in the morning and I eventually went out at 5.

I was short chipped, I had about 6/7 big blinds left, the chip leader at my table had about 5 or 6 times that. I was dealt poker 10's. I flat call (I have got better since then and now I know to raise), there was a couple of folds then there was a min raise, the next player folded and then the one on my right called. I go all in. The original raiser folds and the guy on my right calls.

He has KQ of clubs. The flop comes QQQ. Drawing dead on the flop! If you are going to lose a big tourney, this is the way to go, quad Q's.

I heard that but to be honest I dont think it was possible for him to do it. I think they just wanted rid of him.

Might go to the Maybury tonight for the ?10 deepstack re-buy.

Where were you talking to him?

He had a disciplinary thingy last week apparently and got the bullet. Pocketing money from the till I believe.

He was playing at Diane's on Monday night (that's not unusual though)- he was the dealer that threw all the bad beats my way!

Maybury Phone - 0131 338 4444

That's now a ?30 freezeout as of this week, not sure if any of the other games have changed. Got to the final table fairly easily, barely any decent players took part that I noticed. Got done with pocket queens by a rag ace. Shanner.

I heard there is a 50 quid double chance freezeout on Thursdays nights now too.

Finished 8th at the Office Poker today. Bit gash seeing as I built up a stack quite early on but then was card dead for a good 3 hours I'd say. Got blinded and ante'd away and losing the odd pot and was a bit of a battle to stay in.

In the end had 24k on final table.

K6 in BB. Blinds 1,500-3,000, ante 200. Guy min raises mid possession. So it's only 3,000 more to me into a pot of like 12,000 so I feel I should prob call and do so.

Flop comes K high. Felt I was probably ahead and decide for a check raise, guy bets 8k. I go all in for remaining 18k I had behind. He calls and turns over aces.

Harsh lesson in thinking about value. Defending blinds can start off cheap and lead you to trouble.

Disappointed how I played the final table at the office poker.

Had approx 33000 with the blinds at 3000/1500 and 200 ante.

Raised 2 1/2 the blinds in early postion with J 10 Suited! Which is a pretty poor play. Hopefully to take down the blinds and antes and fold of someone comes over the top.

Big Blind goes all in with a big stack and I make my play worse by calling! I could of folded and been in push shove mode.

He turns over pocket 7s which made it 50/50ish. I missed and finished 10th.

It was my 2nd final table in a row aswell and I impoded again!

So easily could of stayed out of trouble.

My excuse is I was hungover and didnt have anything to eat all day.
