US radio stations with a jumble of letters what do these weird names mean?

They don't have a meaning, per se.  When a radio station in North America is given a licence to broadcast, they are assigned a series of letters as a form of identification.  The letters are random, but the first letter will identify the country the station is registered in.

A similar process is used for aircraft registration.

Its the imitials of the radio stations name.

I believe (but may be wrong) that all commercial US stations start with W if east of the Mississippi and K if west.

Canadian ones will begin with C. There is one from St Louis...K-RAP

In the early days of radio, there was a conference where countries were assigned code letters. The USA were given K, W, A and N. :D You're right about K & W and the Mississippi. A and N were used for military purposes.

Older readers may recall an American comedy programme set in a radio station - 'WKRP in Cincinnati'.

A pal of mine is  the morning DJ on W.O.L.D. He used to bevvy a bit, made his voice  go low so the bosses punted him from his old job as they like the young sound these days.

He then drifted on down to Tulsa, Oklahoma doing a late night talk show but he's made his way back up. Makes some extra money doing High School hops but he's starting to think it might be time to start that record store.

He reckons it keeps him young. He feels all of 45 but going on 15.

Why are some months popular for girls names (April, June) whereas other aren't (not many Decembers kicking about)?

I suppose September to December are just named after numbers.

I know a few Mays and Julies as well as those you mentioned. No January, February or March lasses, though.

Augusta...? Don't know any personally, but guess there might be some.

My wife, May, has wondered the same thing.

Similarly, why are some plant names popular female names ... e.g. Rose, Violet, Daisy, Lily .... but other plant names ignored? No-one wants to be Turnip, Carrot, Potato?  Botanic discrimination, if you ask me.

A parent can get with anything these days, and their poor child is stuck with their nonsense for a lifetime.  Some "celebrity", whose name I choose not to remember, has given her child a name that is unpronounceable  symbols.  The pretentious clown needs to get a grip.  There is also a young woman on the LPGA tour whose name is Lee6.  Yes, there's a 6 there.

All that work on the post and everyone ignores it. Damned shame.

The 6 is only an identifier. When she was on the Korean Tour, she was one of several with the same name. The oldest had '1' added and with her being the sixth oldest '6' was applied.

Is there a term for words like unique or infinite - where what it’s describing either is or isn’t?

I got a tenner from Private Eye for an entry in Commentatorballs recently

Jim McInally
BBC Radio Scotland
"The dugouts are quite unique here, I think Elgin City’s are just the same"

Also, nb I'm not a mathematician BUT there are many infinities .... and they are not equal but are all the same size!

Back in the day (either late 80s or early 90s), the Scottish Premier Division was sponsored by 'Fine Fare'. Who were/are they?

Cheers. We're they taken over by another company or just disappear?

I remember the programmes always displaying their name but never questioned who they were.

Was there not a Gateway on Dalry road? Or was it Fine Fare?

It might have been a Fine Fare before it was a Gateway. I think Gateway, who later changed their name to Somerfield, bought out Fine Fare.

If you were asked to build a box, or even buy a box, that was big enough to hold one million one-pound coins, how big would the box need to be?

The box could be a variety of different shapes but the internal volume will always be the same.

OK.  How did you arrive at a box that size, roughly a 4-foot cube?
