Sports Personality of the Year 2012.

I think they have a generic trophy to send out there. There's an extra trophy on the table behind Wiggins.

Replica?

Probably had replica's stationed with all the people who couldn't be there.

They will have had a 3rd 2nd and 1st place trophy sitting in Miami

Fair enough then

English Sports Personality of the Year over for another twelve months then.

Scottish Sportsmen/women have won it 4 times, came 2nd 3 times and 3rd 8 times, more than decent return for our size!

A Scot came third.

If Tiger Tim had become the first British man to win a tennis grand slam in 76 years, the first British man to reach the final of Wimbledon in 74 years, and win Olympic Gold at the London Olympics, I wonder how he would have fared in the vote.

Wiggins was the first Brit EVER to win the Tour De France, much harder to achieve than a major and then won gold in London a couple of days later.

Its a rare occasion when the winner both has the best personalty and sporting achievements.

Damon hill won it one year having neither.

Need to check on Mansell.

Neither his or Murray's achievement is better than the other. He obviously won it because folk in England voted for him.

Greg Rusedski in 1997 never really won anything, but reaching the US Open final that year was enough to win the award, with Henman second.

That must have been a slow year for British Sport.

Of course there are more English recipients, they make up about 85/90% of the population

Country with the biggest population wins the most awards.

:wow:

Just admit it, you don't understand why Wiggins achievements are better than Murray's by quite a distance.

You'd have a point if it was wimbledon he had won. However, he never and Wiggins became the cirst Brit to win the Tour and the first man to win the Tour and Olympics double.

The moment William becomes King, Kate will become Queen.

The Consort of the British King is always Queen. Kate will also be Crowned as William's Consort during William's coronation ceremony.

Wiggins achievements were more or less completely stamina based. Murray's achievements (in the greatest ever era of tennis) required not only stamina, but skill and technique.

The fact that Ennis came 2nd instead of Murray just shows how much of a joke it is.

What does 'stamina based' mean? Do you not think it takes skill to win a road race? Wiggin's technique is one of the reasons he is where he is  Why not give it a go and see how you get on then? There is more to it than cycling up a hill. **** sake.

Murray, as well as he did, didn't have a challenge until the semi-final of tournaments and even then arguably the best player in the world was out injured, making it even easier for him. I'm a big fan of Murray and was delighted with what he achieved, but it just doesn't compare to Wiggo this year.

If you are going to claim they are pro English then even that is wrong because he is from Belgium.

Have you ever actually tried those sports aye? Looks easy on your telly, but they are actually pretty difficult to nail the proper technique to reach world class standards

Face it. You are an ignorant bitter scotch greeting into yer haggis coz yer man got beat. Typical for the hobo bottler i suppose

If they require little skill like your insinuating, why are you no a champion athlete in one of those sports?

I wonder if you'd be running this argument if hoy had won it. I suppose his is just stamina based too

I've already said that Wiggin's achievement was excellent, but I just don't see how it is better than being the first Brit to win a tennis grand slam in 76 years, and reach the final of Wimbledon in 74 years, plus win Gold at the Olympics. I suppose him being the first ever gives him an edge.

Ennis coming 2nd instead of Murray is just silly though, as no way is there more skill or technique involved in running and throwing events than tennis.

By your logic, it can't take much skill to skelp a ball over a net.

Well you got the second part right but your first sentence is nonsense.

Kate is not in the line of succession to the throne, she can never be Queen same as the current Queen's mother was never Queen. She will be Queen Consort.

Edit: Probably a debate for another thread / time though.

So the argument isn't that the SPOTY is biased to England because the first British TDF winner and only man to do the double of Tour and Olympics won it over Murray, it's biased to England because the face of Team GB who captured the imagination came second?

Cool.
