Sports Direct and Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has won the latest round of a High Court fight with Rangers over a merchandise deal said to result in the Glasgow football giant getting about 7p of every ?1 spent. Bosses at a company within the Sports Direct group say Rangers? directors wrongly terminated a deal through which branded products, including kits, were sold, and want damages. Rangers? directors dispute their claim and wanted a judge to call a halt to the litigation.

This. Was there not some SPFL ruling when it looked like Ashley could take control that effectively blocked it?

I thought this was the case whilst Newcastle were in the championship - the same rules do not apply whilst they are in the Prem.

After Newcastle were relegated they thought he'd have to sell up but nothing happened - as if the change in leadership at Ibrox helped demonstrate he had no influence.

Newcastle are in debt to MA to the tune of ?129m.  Doesn't make them a good buying proposition.

I think its the other way round if he wanted to increase his stake in sevco Newcastle being in the championship was the time to do it,there also rules about owning majority stakes in two clubs in Britain something to do with European football, anyway if I was a sevco fan I'd be keeking my pants ,sevco will be his cash cow and the lying king can't do a thing about it

While all the iBroke stuff is all runours that haven't come to pass (nets up in January, Hampden rented next season, ?12m to replace roofs and so on), even King himself has admitted the stadium needs multi million pounds investment.

Is a sale and lease back a viable option? Who would be responsible for repairs and this multi million pound investment?

Or does this put the lender in an even stronger position? Place falling apart means needs to get Return on Investment even quicker, i.e seriously onerous high short term rent, or make repairs and tie the tenant into a v. long term unbreakable lease?

Ashley needs Newcastle in EPL, so he shouldn't be allowed to take any more stake in Rangers under the rules. If anything he could invest but he takes stadium, tighter retail deal or longer terms than the initial 7 years.

Cue Houston, Graham and the hordes going mental about the stadium not being in the club's name despite the TOP and TAP evidence suggesting the initial consortium offer was to take Ibrox as security away from the club.

And the fans groups were involved/supportive of the proposal.

What folk will do and say to get a club tie, a pair of brown brogues and a seat in the directors box.

From today?s Daily Mail

The chairman of Arnold Palmer Enterprises will be flying to Glasgow after the Masters to be the chief prosecution witness in Scottish football?s biggest fraud trial.

Alastair Johnston, Palmer?s agent, will be testifying at the High Court in Glasgow against former Rangers owner Craig Whyte, whose trial starting on April 18 is scheduled to last three months.

Johnston is a former chairman of Rangers who was sacked by Whyte when he took control of Ibrox in May 2011, before the club went into administration in February 2012 and then liquidation four months later.

Now if Johnston is the chief prosecution witness, then I wonder if SDM will be Whyte?s chief defence witness :toilet: Edited by Footballfirst

Why do Rangers think taking Ashley to court is a good idea?

To be fair MA's lawyers have made a mess of the last few cases.

Because they have no money and unless they can get the crappy sponsorship deal wiped out they will continue to have no money for the foreseeable future.

And what the Glasgow media refuse to say is that is if it wasn't for the MA loan of not too ,long ago Sevco would already be out of business.

In short, Sevco are taking a guy to court who saved them from extinction to overturn a commercial deal that no one else was willing to sign up to.

But the Daily ****** et al won't tell you that.

I've read it as a show of strength from MA, a message - "I will bring frivolous court case after frivolous court case and tie you up without batting an eyelid. I have an in house team of lawyers ready to do my bidding, and most of the time I don't even care. I will spend a fortune to inconvenience you"

There were also two other substantial threads related to this one.  The first covered the lead up to the oldco's demise which started almost as soon as Murray sold the club to Whyte.  The second was created out of this one to cover the existential debate triggered by "Bryce9a"

I'm certainly no lawyer, but it seemed to me he could've done better if the legal team were at least awake - and while it might be MA can easily afford to lose these cases (I'm sure he can) I'd expect him to want to win them all.

Rangers have appointed a 'Supporters Liason Officer'.

Greg Marshall from later this month .

"...will represent the interests of both the club and supporters by building strong and harmonious relationships between the fans and relevant stakeholders through continual inclusion, dialogue and feedback"

Also "promote fan engagement and diversity" and "the main point of contact for individual supporters and supporters' clubs"
