I think the OP will be amazed to see you've converted his niece into a "young man".

You concede the point about not subjecting a youngster with violence but go onto convey the scenario of you being involved in a square go with the racist deviant? And yet you maintain it is not about 'manhood'? Peculiar.

With a child in tow you do not get involved. You remove the following scenarios: A confrontation with the child at risk of being hurt (and this going to happen). Or a confrontation which results in the police carting you off with the child left stranded (cops have been known not to listen to pleas with "what about my kid?" when bundling someone into the van).

OP was correct not to seek confrontation and remove both he (and more importantly, the child) away from the scene.

EDIT: have just seen OP's response to this poster.

Look up. :stuart:

I understand your circumstances and how they might prevent appropriate action. But you must see that it wasn't explained in your original post and you looked like someone out for a rant who wouldn't back it up when it counted. Upon further reading, it seems he was a speaker? And not just some drunk **** who wanted to spew his bile? I clearly see the implications of a confrontation when in the company of a friend who is a member.

My dad never put up with that stuff, and I remember him nearly coming to blows with a guy when I was six for shouting racial slurs in a pub while I was there.

I'm sorry if I came across to strong, but I find people who do nothing then complain later just as bad as the instigator.

I am the first person to speak my mind even if it gets me into bother, and have managed to get rid of a few racist ****bags near me in the Wheatfiled by complaint, confrontation and the face to face threats (usually with the polis nearby, right enough!). My profession (teacher) precludes violence of any kind and I must consider the economic and career-ending consequences before acting. That said, I fight my corner against all racist and sectarian chants both before and during games and felt that this forum might be a place to debate this matter in a grown-up manner. Anyone who knows me knows that I am no shrinking violet!

And it was, I didn't act immature in my responce. Which I now see was OTT given the extenuating circumstances for avoiding confrontation.

As for putting your job at risk, it's a sad state of affairs where a teacher could jeopardise his position by confronting a racist.

If I'm being honest, I think the OP is talking complete bollocks!

The Merchie is not a favourite watering hole of mine, and I've had my run ins with them in the past, but I don't believe for a minute they would let a "BIG STEVIE" drink in there who walked in the door and shouted what the OP claimed was shouted. The whole story sounds really far fetched to me, especially as I know a lot of people who do drink in there and none of them have mentioned "BIG STEVIE"

Might I suggest the OP applies for a job on Jackanory?

Yeah, I thought that it was some drunk coming in shouting his head off. But the OP made it sound like he was a speaker, and clearly known to the bar staff. Anyway, I've said my piece.

I spoke of my discontent at his lack of responce, then apologized for the severity of my post. I have both bases coverd if it turns out to be true or bollocks. :2thumbsup:

wherever it happens around Hearts it should be challenged. I admire the guy sitting behind me at the Motherwell away game a few weeks ago who was with his really young lad and took on the idiot sitting behind him regarding his racist abuse of Obua ("get to **** back to Congo you black b******). Charming.

Due to new licensing laws, I was unable to take my niece to the Station Bar before Hibs game. Instead, I took her to the Merchie where I was told to use the family area the back. Now, although supposedly the family area, I was told to be prepared for the arrival of BIG STEVIE, who I was told was a little racist, but good fun: an oxymoron if ever one existed!

Stevie duly arrived on the scene with the screamed proclamation: I hate *******, *******, Jews, Spics, wops, catholics and poofs. And, I'm proud of it!This moron then held court, with an audience of people forced to use this area. There were two young brothers who hung on every word of this cretin and It felt depressingly like a recruitment camp for the BNP.

Now, you too might be in the same boat, where the only place you can take your kids before the game is the Merchiston Hearts Supporters Club. However, you should not have to put up with this racist crap and I hpoe that you will complain if this same moron acts like this again (tomorrow, for example).

If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem.

So tell me, were you part of the solution or the problem in this sorry situation?

What I think is utterly out of order, and I am complaing bitterly, I don't mind being referred to as Filth because of previous occupation, but when you refer to my Regiment as Scotts Guards I just boil over. The title is Scots Guards.

I am not really angry just showing how we all have our hates, loves, and different principles. :2thumbsup:

Yet how on earth is a serious issue like racism ever to be debated on JKB if whoever raises it runs the risk of their manhood being questioned?

Read his post again. He had a child with him. What responsible adult seeks verbal and possible violent confrontation with a child in proximity? Maybe that's why he may have done nothing at the time and chose to move on lest an already uncomfortable situation escalate into something potentially damaging to either him or a younger relation.

Spot on, Matty.

Getting pretty sick of reading this place at times. Standard response after standard response after standard response after...

From kids with little life experience no less!

I punched a couple of Hibbies at the last derby (after hefty provocation and having them "square up" to me ) - This wouldn't have happened if I was setting an example to my boy and had more to lose than my good looks.

I sometimes take the kids into the "family room" and was there 2 weeks ago.I can't recall hearing anybody ranting on about racist subjects though?? Can't say I've ever heard or seen of anybody causing bother there or in the main hall when I go in there without the kids. Must admit though I wouldn't let my 7year old daughter listen to this (there's quite a lot of ethnic kids in her school)and would definitely tell whoever to calm it down for the kids sake.

It's usually fine in the family room and when I was a kid I used to like all the atmosphere before a match in the pub or club (no drink of course) and it was good to see the Uncle's and cousins etc which you hardly saw during the week.

Ive two boys age's 9 and 6 and i dont take them to a pub because im a better dad/uncle than you. If u had someone talking like that in the seat next to you at tynecastle than fair enough. You were in a boozer, does it really matter if you dont get a couple of pints before the game? Dont get me wrong because its in a pub it doesnt make it acceptable however such is life in dodgy boozers. Harsh but true!

Do you mind? I've been is some "dodgy boozers" in my time but the MHSC certainly isn't one of them!! It's more akin to a bowling club atmosphere!

I think he was pretty clear in what he was saying in his original post...

In all honesty mate it looked to me like you were dying to come in and play devil's advocate... "Two sides to every story, ol' chap" and all that. I garnered from his post that he was with a wee lassie and did not want to stoop to the level of the stroker in the 'family room' and so did not say anything... By coming on here and mentioning it, he appears to be trying to determine what other people feel about such things since it is really common in the pubs around Tynie on match-days... Perhaps he wants to find out what his chances are of getting some support from the public if his confrontation with the semi-retarded t.wat turns into 'BIG Stevie' and his wee band of thick minions kicking him in the head in front of his neice?

n-

This kind of "be like us" redneck attitude is prevalent throughout the proletariat in Scotland, so it is no surprise that the "let's get bevvied up" before the game merchants who belong to this rather sad rump within our society make themselves known for a short time every Saturday before going home to beat the wife and kids

Two things: if I had not been with my niece (my wife dropped out late) I would not have been in the club and so would not have had to endure this neanderthal. However, IF I had been in the club on my own or IF the guy had acted the same way in the Station where I normally go I would have spoken up, whether it resulted in a bit of rough and tumble or not. It would have been unfortunate as I would have embarrassed the member who signed me in and could have landed me in court with serious consequences for my career; but I feel that it is necessary to make a stand. That is the reason for my post, which sought to identify and hopefully shame the tosser involved and hopefully persuade him to keep his odious opinions to himself in future.

By the way, I only mentioned some of this guys antics. When the team was announced witout Obua, he was high-fiving his accolytes and hugging the afore mentioned wee boys that the black ******* was not playing. This guy was both provocative and obnoxious. I did not post to rile or antagonise, but to seek support from the decent majority. The debate on here so far suggests taht there is indeed a problem which needs to be addressed. Thanks.

You will always get loud mouths in pubs no matter where you go slavering about all insundry

Some people just love the sound of their own voice especially when they have an audience

But to save any more uncomfortable experiences look for somewhere else to go, must be a few places that cater for your needs

I don't really see what else you can do mate... When meeting up with folk before the game I have to endure a fair amount of this crap but have become quite apathetic to it and put it down to just being the done thing in well... Certain bars... They do not let kids in though so I suppose it is not nearly as bad... I wouldn't even think about confronting anyone in there about it though as so many people seem to love the wee sing-songs about race that I would expect a pretty swift kicking.

However if I was sure that enough people were willing to bail in if I was mobbed then I probably would... Dunno though, I say that now, maybe at the time I wouldn't who knows... Pretty daunting prospect when it is coming from so many people eh?

I would recomend Diggers or the Caley Sample Room next time if you have a kid with you and if they let kids in. My girlfriend's parents are Indian and she therefor is dark skinned and looks like what these retards would call a pak! and I have been in Diggers and the Caley with her on match days and never had any bother or cause for embarassment... Wouldn't take her anywhere near some of the other dives though.

Oh, we've never had any bother in the Tynie arms either.

Just read throught the "highlights" of this thread and I can't beleive the grief you received for raising a valid concern and a relevant incident on a Hearts forum.

Happily I do not beleive that the posts on this thread represent a true cross section of Hearts fans. If they did then we truely do have issues.

I do not think he would go to such lengths to make up a story like that when he stands to gain nothing at all from it except some posts doubting his honesty.

I used to live opposite the Merchie for six years, never went in to the MHSC but while waiting on a bus to go up town I heard a couple of guys from there giving it all that crap while they were having a snout outside... Maybe standards have dropped since you used to frequent and they are allowed to continue such conversations inside at volume now?

Seems just as likely as the OP making up fantastic stories to me?
