I just find it funny myself, has no real impact on Hearts and plenty banter material

That's pretty much how I see it, mate - unless he is selling, as Dexter says - that would be a story!

I think we'll find out tomorrow if he will be allowed to stand in the elections which are in May. According to the Lithuanian constitution only those who are of Lithuanian origin are allowed to be President, but we'll see.

Yes, as a matter of fact VR wants to run for President of the Republic of Lithuania; all this looks rather funny: he showed up last minute for registration, he couldn't present any political programm, by the way, he said that even his wife did not know this decision, etc etc. Anyway, he has no chance to win. What is more, most probably he will not be registered as an official candidate for the president because according Lithuanian Constitution, a candidate, among other things, should be "a Lithuanian citizen by origin" which must mean that his parents or grandparents must have had Lithuanian citizenship but his parents did not have Lithuanian citizenship - as you might know VR is kind of a naturalized Russian (of course VR himself has Lithuanian citizenship).

all right, we all know VR is mad but well madness might be of different degrees :) I've read a lot of his interviews and other strange stuff about him and my conclusion is that he sometimes gets bored and then does or says some crazy things. The best thing would be that he would do some crazy stuff for Hearts and bring Heart of Midlothian to a new level :)

It could just be a publicity stunt or maybe he believes the public are bored / angry with regular politicians ?

VR faces the press..

Journalist: When did you make this decision [to apply for candidacy]?

VR:This morning, about 11 am.

Journalist: Why?

VR: Because I hope to defeat my enemies in football. Their "system" is big and you need to fight the whole Sports department. Now I have no chance.

<...>

Journalist:You said you will fight the "system". What is it about?

VR: I'm stuck and can't do anything right now because illegal business functions legally. Such as betting companies, casinos. Some are licensed, some not, and they operate with huge sums of money, also bribe... not only bribe, but make referees and footballers slaves.

From BBC :qqb003:

Romanov wants Lithuania's top job

Vladimir Romanov shows concern while watching Hearts

Romanov is a well-known face in Lithuania after his dancing success

Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov has taken the first steps towards becoming a candidate for Lithuania's presidency.

The Lithuanian consulate in London says Romanov has put his name forward for their forthcoming election.

Nominations close on Friday for the May poll, but there is a question-mark over whether he can stand for office.

The businessman, who recently topped a public vote in his country's version of Strictly Come Dancing, was born in Russia and might not be eligible.

Romanov, whose family moved to Lithuania when he was aged nine, is presently attempting to determine whether he qualifies to stand in the election.

Charlie Mann, the former spokesman for Romanov, told BBC Scotland: "I had a couple of calls from Lithuania saying he had submitted his papers.

"He is hardly Barrack Obama and he does not have the political skills of our own First Minister Alex Salmond, himself a Hearts fan, but he spent a lot of time with George Foulkes, so maybe George has given him the bug."

Silvio Berlusconi does it with AC Milan and Italy, so why not Romanov with Hearts and Lithuania

Former Hearts midfielder Allan Preston

MP and former Hearts chairman Foulkes had introduced Romanov to the Edinburgh club but became one of 60-year-old Romanov's fiercest critics for his leadership style.

The former Soviet submariner has been an often controversial figure since taking control at Tynecastle in 2005.

Romanov began his reign by promising to break the stranglehold on the Scottish title long enjoyed by Glasgow clubs Celtic and Rangers but has sacked a succession of managers as the Old Firm continued to dominate.

Through sponsorship, he also controls the Lithuanian club FBK Kaunas and Belarusian Premier League outfit FC MTZ-RIPO and, in addition, has property and textile interests.

The owner has used Kaunas as a feeder club for Hearts, who have signed a string of Lithuanian players, and former managers accused him of meddling in team affairs.

"It has been a year or so since I have worked with him closely, but in my time I worked with him he did have political aspirations.

"There were lots of leading Lithuanian government figures at the prestigious New Year events that Romanov runs for his business contacts.

"He did move in the right circles."

The principal business interest for Romanov, who says he began his rise to riches selling bootleg Beatles records, is a substantial stake in the Lithuanian bank Ukio Bankas.

He is chairman of the bank's parent body, UBIG Investments, which is the majority of shareholder in Scottish Premier League club Hearts.

"It is an amazing story, but he is a man who, if he wants something, he often gets what he wants and achieves his goals," said Mann.

"However, there must be a doubt about whether someone who is not born in the country can be president."

Mann pointed out that Romanov had recently taken more of a back seat at Tynecastle, proof of his trust in chief executive Campbell Ogilvie and team manager Csaba Lazslo.

Former Hearts midfielder Allan Preston did not see why Romanov could not make a success of the dual role.

"Silvio Berlusconi does it with AC Milan and Italy, so why not Romanov with Hearts and Lithuania," he said.

If he wins (which of course he won't), then I guess my simple rule of South America will have to be adjusted to incorporate Lithuania too:

Little thief goes to jail. Big thief becomes President. :alucard:

A few kickbackers get a mention

FOOTIE chief Vladimir Romanov is set to talk tactics with the world?s most powerful leaders ? if he wins the race to become president of Lithuania.

Victory in the May 17 election would see him rub shoulders with the likes of Prime Minister Gordon Brown and US leader Barak Obama.

But the news has not gone down so well in the Baltic state ? thanks to the fact he was born in Russia.

When asked about his eligibility to be president by the Lithuanian press yesterday, Romanov replied: ?I do not know whether I am eligible. There is a commission and they decide.?

He then cheekily added: ?Look at me, why would I not meet (the criteria)??

Current Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus is due to step down after serving his second five-year term in office ? the longest period permitted under the Lithuanian constitution.

Storm

If Romanov is to be successful in his bid, he will have to collect 20,000 citizens? signatures by April 2 in support of his attempt.

Remigijus Jurgelaitis, a spokesperson for the UBIG investment group that Romanov chairs, said: ?It is true Mr Romanov has entered, but there are 15 candidates at the moment and the situation is changing all the time.

?I think this is a good opportunity and he has a good chance.

?Many Lithuanian people will give their vote to Mr Romanov.?

The former Russian submarine officer has been a controversial figure since becoming the majority shareholder in the Tynecastle club four years ago.

Last night the Gorgie faithful discussing the sensational move on the Jambos Kickback supporters? website compared him to evil genius Blofeld from the James Bond films.

One, calling himself King of the North, posted: ?How many other chairmen have weapons, an army and a police force at their beck and call.

?I?ll tell you ? none of them. Not even David Murray.?

Fellow fan Dipped Flake added: ?He was getting a bit boring lately so good to see him back on form.

?Imagine having the president of a country as the main man at Hearts, beat that Old Firm.?

But a spokesman from the Lithuanian embassy in London explained that the country?s president is not as powerful as their Prime Minister.

He said: ?The president of Lithuania is not that powerful.

?The government and the Prime Minister are the most powerful. The PM is appointed by the President but is normally the head of the party with the most votes in parliament.?

He added: ?I do not think Mr Romanov is a very strong candidate.

?Of the 15 candidates there is only really one strong candidate, Dalia Grybauskaite ? the European Union?s Financial Planning and Budgets Commissioner.?

Russian-born Romanov, who moved to Lithuania with his family when he was nine, is a celebrity in the Baltic state, having won Dancing with the Stars ? their equivalent to Strictly Come Dancing ? in 2007.

Last night, his former spokesman Charlie Mann said: ?I am not surprised, as he always had political ambitions in the country.

?He is a determined man and when he sets his sights on something he normally gets it.

?People doubted him when he entered the dancing competition as a 60-year-old but he won it none the less.?

It?s thought his fortune runs into the hundreds of millions of pounds, with business interests in aluminium, textiles, property and the financial sector.

Romanov also controls Lithuanian club FBK Kaunas ? the side that knocked Rangers out of this season?s Champions League ? and MTZ-Ripo of Belarus.

But he has caused controversy since taking over Hearts with his outspoken remarks about the football authorities and the Old Firm, and his meddling in the first team.

He hit the headlines once again this season when Hearts failed to pay their players on two separate occasions.

Das Root commented on the Hearts fan site: ?If he gets it he could declare actual war on the SFA. That would be a good, good day.?

Hearts refused to comment on the race for the presidency.

The first round of elections takes place on May 17. The two most popular candidates will then be put forward to a second election on June 7.

My Lithuanian isnt what it was but one of those papers seems to carry a poll asking whether you would vote for him.

Naturally, I voted yes but it appears that only 16% of those voting agree with me

So, dont hold your breath if you're waiting to see him elected.
