bighusref
Is Chris Hoy not Scottish and British...? That seems lost to some on here. I find a lot of this thread strange, here is my personal opinion on what seems a non debate. Whenever we (the public) see someone succeed, we often look for a link to ourselves, be it a name, be it nationality etc etc. Alex Salmond (whatever you think of him) IS Scottish and it is entirely reasonable for him to praise his fellow Scots. Some of us from the capital city may congratulate him as a fellow Edinburgh man, some of us may congratulate him as a former pupil of the same school, or a guy from the same area of the city as you. This works upwards too, English, Welsh and Northern Irish could congratulate him as a fellow Brit. Given all of that, and putting aside the obviously cringeworthy "braveheart"* comment, surely all British people could have reason to feel a link with OUR Olympic hero? If you feel British, cool, he represented Britain, if you feel Scottish, cool he is Scottish, if you feel like a citizen of Edinburgh etc, etc, etc. I don't see how this can be so upsetting. * That term alone was enough to despise Colin Hendry IMO. i8hibsh
Just think, if the UK went into union with France you could be proud of even more inventors and scientists. I would still keep my identity tho something that the Nats are very insecure about
