If he's totally serious about it then the Royal Conservatoire is the way to go. Not just the training but the contacts that you make for the rest of your career. I know people who have studied drama down south and then move back to Scotland and realise they don't know anyone and are out of the loop. Also if he hasn't done it already get on board with a good youth theatre. Strangetown are excellent and do full scale shows in proper theatres, also the Lyceum Youth Theatre. I recommend those as the people that run them are real theatre professionals with careers. A lot of places that set themselves up as theatre or dance training are purely commercial ventures run by charlatans that teach the kids nothing as they don't know much themselves, Strangetown and LYT are proper arts organisations funded by Creative Scotland (replaced the Arts Council).

Thanks Taz, some very helpful information. He’s currently with the Brunton Theatre and MPA (formerly the Pauline Quirke Academy)

Anyway, sorry guys for derailing the thread.

Back on topic…Have you seen the people that will supposedly be exempt from being called up…people with heart disease, diabetes, back problems, bad teeth and piles ffs. No doubt things like adhd, too fat will be added, etc

thsts  me think about why I didn’t go ? It was a mixture Lack of confidence  and not having someone to push me to my dreams really at that time tbh , that’s what it’s great to read how you are actively encouraging your lad  pursue his 👍👍

I’m staggered you lacked confidence. When he first told me he wanted to be an actor, inside I was thinking that I wish he wanted to something else, as that’s a hard game with lots of rejection. It’s his dream though, so we will support him 100% to fulfill it.

My confidence came with age I feel . I grew into it . Yes I can understand your concerns about the acting profession due to the rejections and limited scope for Roles etc . However it’s his dream and no one should put a damper on anyone’s dreams . 👍wish him all the best 👍

Soon as I see celebs, politicians and royalty offering themselves / their flesh and blood, then we can talk.

My guess is that the median age of posters on JKB is somewhere around 52-53.  No government in its right mind would want any of us anywhere near the TV remote, let alone expensive and dangerous military equipment.

Bret the Hitman Hearts

I can't imagine how conscription would work in the modern "snowflake"era.

The sheer numbers of people refusing to be conscripted would make it unworkable. It would be in the millions.

When I was serving, the maximum contract length was 22 years.  You could sign up for 3, 6 or 9 and once you had completed your first stint you could keep going up to 22 years however if you did 9 years then left you were eligible to be recalled back to complete the other 13 years up until the age of 55 when you are no longer required to be recalled.

Now I’m not exactly sure of the current enlistment process but, I’d imagine we already have a fair amount of “citizens” who are able to be *recalled back to the forces and retrained fairly quickly.  Every year (in my unit) we lost about 90-100 people through retirement/end of contract.

* I cannot be recalled back as I completed more that 22 years 😏

Everyone who joins the military has to sign up for 22 years but after you have completed 4 years service you can leave after giving a years notice. I left after 6 years but was still eligible to be recalled until my 22 years from signing up date was completed.

Yes that’s what I said……I may not have been clear though.  The additional “call up” (or call back) is void when you hit 55.

There are many opportunities, not just fighting. Cyber warfare is very important too.

Never thought I’d say this, but what we fighting for.

So that-

1. asylum seekers can get a council flat.

2. I can keep paying 42% tax

3. I can pay extortionate council tax

4. I can pay £550 Road tax and drive on pot hole ridden streets.

You get the picture, may be Putin taking over wouldn’t be any worse than it currently is in the UK.

Don’t even get me started on our Governments giving out tax money away to other countries prior to fixing issues at home.

I really hate living in the UK and can’t wait to retire and leave.
