As the Paralympics are beginning I thought I’d give another recommendation for Rising Phoenix on Netflix. Some remarkable humans talking about their lives as athletes and the challenges. It’s worth it just for the remarkable young Italian fencer’s attempt for the medal after her being one of the stars of the interviews.

“ Killing patient zero “

Excellent documentary about Gaetan Dugas aka as “ patient zero “ Except he was unfairly stigmatised as the first main transmitter of HIV . He was an airline pilot and travelled world wide and while there’s no doubt he infected many , he was not fully responsible . It’s explained more clearly in the film . However even though he knew he was HIV + he still continued to have sex , claiming that it wasn’t clear how HIV was transmitted so he might not have been transmitted it to anyone ( he was right though ,  but his argument has some flawed/ skewered / selfish  logic to it I suppose as at that time it was not confirmed how  HIV was transmitted ) 1982/3/4.

The film casts a sympathetic eye over this guy cause he wasn’t just the only gay being extremely promiscuous. It was endemic in the culture , hence its high transmission rates . Lots of moving stories of survivors of this disease and those dark days of the early 1980s.

6 schizophrenic brothers. Heartbreaking story of the galvin family in the USA, 12 kids and half of them developed this horrific mental condition. Interviews with some of them and fascinating as it is desperately sad. As a sufferer of a mental health condition, it resonates with me and no doubt countless others.

That’s extremely rare for half a family to have the same mental health condition . In particular schizophrenia, which is an awful condition and much misunderstand

It's a tough watch, a lot of other heartbreaking stuff happened in the their family home. Genuinely think what's the point of life when so many of theirs was basically ruined by this horrible situation

This was an excellent 3 part documentary about the real great escape.

it dispells a few of the myths from the famour film but noticeably there were some truths in the film too. Sadly 50 of those who escaped were murdered, against the Geneva Convention rules due to a vengeful and spitefull SS commander ( who ironically was never captured). It was on the PBS American channel so it will probably be repeated again

Trump's Heist - Channel 4 on catch up, about the refusal to accept the 2020 election results and how they tried to influence the outcome. Astonishing and terrifying in equal measure, including input from people who were previously insiders like Bill Barr the attorney general. It made me wonder if it would be scarier if he won or lost this time....

Watched both of these and I'll second that they are both worth watching. The Slavery at Sea one was tough viewing at times.

The Turnaround. A short documentary on Netflix. It’s baseball related but I think some of our fans could benefit from watching it.

Surviving 0ct 7, we will dance again.

Full on horrific and distressing to watch, recounts the turn of events during the hamas attack on the trance rave in Israel. Feature hamas body cam footage, and actual phone footage from the survivors, and interviews with some of these survivors. Harrowing and heartbreaking

“ Lucan “ on bbc iplayer . Excellent documentary focussing on the illegitimate son of Sandra Rivett  quest to locate Lucan . Sandra  was allegedly murdered by Lucan in 1974 . She  was the nanny to the Lucan children and it’s claimed she was murdered by accident as Lucan was apparently blind drunk when he came back to the house to murder his wife Lady Lucan . All alleged Ofcourse as he was never found to face trial . Anyway the documentary is viewed from her son’s perspective and it’s very moving as he locates a person he believes to be Lucan . There is a jaw dropping towards the end of it . 9/10 from me .

Billy and Molly - an Otter Love Story is a lovely wee heartwarming tale, set in Shetland. It’s a documentary with a bit of artistic license taken along the way. Saw it a few months ago in the US but it’s now out on Disney+ and Nat Geo in the UK. Well worth a watch.

7/7: The London Bombings on BBC iplayer is good for interviewing key participants including all the different key Police and forensic people as well as victims.

Some dramatic stories. Obviously covers the murder of the Brazilian guy and they are clever in putting it alongside the gung ho arrogant firearms officers. Show the full event with all the chances to prevent it.

Best for me were the stories of the forensic officers who took the bodies of the dead the lady who lost both legs. A couple of pretty inspiring stories there.

I started watching this but had to turn off when the cop who was first on the scene started talking about going onto the bus with the 2 firefighters. It’s sometimes too hard to watch things like that.

Yeah

But how much they cared was inspirational.

They did well to get all the key people to talk to.

Spoiler alert re one of the stories.

Spoiler

The forensic people recovering the bodies slept in the train carriages so that the dead weren't left alone.

Watched the 3 episode Netflix doc called 'The most hated man on the internet' which was about a truly despicable character called Hunter Moore. In 2010 he created a revenge porn website which in itself was vile but it went further than pics. They were also posting social media details of these women/girls sometimes including home addresses.

There was a comments option for these pics and the bulk of it was horrendous stuff for these women to be subjected to. And apparently this wasn't illegal, there was nothing anyone including the law could do about it. It's difficult to appreciate how this devastates individual lives and the lives of entire families including children.

What ultimately brought this piece of human crap down was it eventually went beyond just malicious ex boyfriends and the like posting pics of the ex to include hacking peoples email accounts and social media accounts to steal photos they have stored there. This IS illegal.

It features a huge range of people affected by it and who became involved including initially one truly tenacious mother whose daughters photos had been put on that site ‎while the daughter said the only way this could happen is by hacking. It's only in a folder in my email account only I have ever seen it I sent it to no one.

This woman despite threats just badgered away at it till she eventually brought in others including an ex marine who was a cyber expert and the FBI all of which occurred because of the tenacity of this mother while under threat from the community this weirdo had built on his site.

They called themselves 'the family' Manson like and it turned this guy into a sort of cult figure like Trump people totally almost deified.

And just like Trump he would set the weirdos on anyone who tried to interfere. About as despicable a human being as you could imagine, made all sorts of online threats including someone might  rape the ex marines wife in front of their children and that was a real bad idea when it came to this marine.

A good watch with a happy ending in that you see a piece of shit you came to hate look untouchable until he crashed and burned after a long struggle initiated by a protective mother. A journalist she eventually managed to get involved said of her that she had the investigative ability of a seasoned investigative journalist.

She handed the FBI a folder full of material with the details of dozens of victims she had personally tracked down and spoken with. She set it going.

Not a docu but have you ever seen 'ring of bright water'?

It's set in Scotland and is a fictional account of a guy who really did live in a remote coastal area of Scotland and kept wild otters as pets. He wrote a book called ring of bright water which described his life there with these otters which sold in the millions. I guess that could buy a lot of otter grub.

His name was Gavin Maxwell and while the film of ring of bright water starring Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna isn't like the book I still enjoyed it when I saw it as a child, stuck in my memory.

Sex Panther

Imposter: The Man Who Came Back From The Dead on 4 on Demand  - All about Nicholas Rossi who many will  have seen on the news over the last few years. A truly bizarre tale about an absolutely awful human. I only knew about him at arms length from the news reports but this documentary fills in the blanks very well, and then some. Couldn't believe what I was watching at times.

Until The Wheels Fall Off.

May not be for everyone however if like me your were into Skating back in Feb day then this is brilliant.

Full 2 hour 15 documentary on Tony Hawk. How he got into skateboarding, early career, the good the bad and the ugly all the way through the Bones Brigade era and onto present day.

I found it fascinating especially the segment on Tony Hawks Pro Skateboarding on the PlayStation.

Well worth a watch if you were into skating or played his game series. Available on demand on Sky Documentaries.

Finished watching all episodes of I am a killer on Netflix.

They all are pretty similar in that in the first part you hear their story and you feel like they have been hard done by. The second bit of the episode gives the other perspective and some facts that have been missed out of the original tale telling.

Could watch these all day long.
