Glenn Whelan signs one year deal with Hearts (title updated)

Might turn out to be the key signing of the season for us. We’ve lacked leadership in the middle, only Naismith really provides that which is partly why we missed him so much last season. Haring has it but Whelan is a while other level experience wise.

Centre mid is all about combinations. Brown was nothing without mcgregor for example last night. Now Clare can have a spell on the bench and we can hopefully play some better football with more experienced heads in there when needed.

Still worried about where goals are coming from when Naismith’s out but at least Walker has got his eye in already.

This is our best squad for quite a while. Need a result and performance on friday to get things on track.

Another who will be booed and questioned why he was signed within 120 minutes of first team football.

Welcome to the shit show which is our support.

Would prefer if we didn’t keep signing Irish / northern Irish people though

If you think I'm on something now wait till you see the state of me if Craig kicks doors off the hinges in Riccarton. That means someone's been in his ears.

99% of what you write leaves me utterly flailing.

Sean's never hid and like you sense now has a chance to develope beside talent. It's the long haul ending. I hope he gets the ball on his thunder blaster soon because he deserves to be a playmaker that's what he's good at.

Good signing. Remember watching Whelan beat up people all over the Prem and Championship. For the love of God Levein please go to the 4231.

What are you expecting... for our budget this is about as marquee signing as we will get.

Point taken, but you know what I mean. Naismith probably the most glamorous signing we've made this window, albeit he has been here long prior to the permanent deal. Pereira probably the highest profile seeing as he's coming from Old Trafford. Whelan is potentially the best outfield signing of the summer, but is certainly not a fashionable dude

Welcome Glenn

Really pleased with this and don't think there is much risk. I think he will bring the steel we need in the middle of the park. Also his experience will also will benefit the younger boys.

Looking forward to the season again

It’s the main part of the job really.

Unfortunately this basic skill is missing from a lot of coaches...not just at Hearts, but across football.

You’d probably be good at the interviews tbf.

You’d ask all the right questions.

Edit: I didn’t mean to type the word ‘right’.

Another Neil macfarlane???

Nah, MacFarlane was taller! Joking aside, Whelan is coming here at the latter end of his career with nothing in his trophy cabinet at home. Hopefully he'll be a driving force to get a medal. Or two even!

Was never in doubt in my mind

Whelan's dad hasn't been well of late

Hence the delay

But there wasn’t a delay. You told us two weeks ago that he had signed and the announcement was imminent.  Clearly bullshit,

What does McPhee have to do with Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan? Please enlighten us.

Whatever the thoughts are on things manager-wise, theres no doubt we have a quality centre mid pairing.

It's been a very good transfer window.

If Whelan has signed - IMO - his signing could well save Levein’s job.

Between Whelan and Naismith there should be enough leadership on the park to make up for the lack of leadership off it.

Another one of Levein’s nine lives used up. Lucky boy!

A manager that works so hard to get a signing isn’t luck

Levein needs older journeymen to organise the team on the pitch because his management team can’t.

Naismith, Berra, McLean, Cowie, Hughes ect have all been needed by Levein to manage what was

going on on the pitch.

All top teams have more than one leader and people that can “manage” games as required

He gave Hughes another contract last summer when that money would’ve been better spent elsewhere.

Hughes has been a huge positive influence on a number of our young players - check past interviews

Wow, well worth the Hundreds of thousands we paid him then whilst tie coaches hang about with their hands in their pockets.
