Both blokes playing the old “punch myself and get the day off work” trick. Guy at the back is more practiced/committed.

Great minda MS, both thinking about fish ;)

A couple of old chippys. I’m trying to find one of the old Clan Chattan chippy which was next door to the Canny Mans in Morningside. Having no luck with it...anybody???

One of the guys who served you was scary as. The look in his eyes when he said ‘salt & sauce’ made you say yes, whether you wanted it, or not. You just didn’t want to upset him in case he jumped the counter and murdered you

I immediately thought Tynie Arms. But looking closer the street is nowhere near wide enough to be the top of McLeod Street.

The junction at McLeod Street wasn't always so open.  There was a tenement with shops under it opposite the Tynie Arms.

Cheers, I was assuming you knew the locations. I'm pretty sure it's what I suggested.

Dalgety Avenue.

I assume “The Hoppy” was there at the time of the first photo. I’m basing this on  the interior when I visited a couple years ago.

The McGillvary family from Oxgangs.

The old man was ok but the two sons (especially ‘scary eyes’) were a bit wild.

Scary eyes ended up in the Royal Edinburgh. We had a friend who worked in the Abbey on Morningside Road who used to serve him when he came in with his carer. He asked for all his withdrawals in fivers and did a hop, skip, jump as he was leaving the premises.

Apparently, he also thought he looked like Rod Stewart!

Spot on Morgan, they later took over the Nook takeaway on Morningside Road opposite the Post Office. I had heard he ended up in the Royal Ed.

Rod Stewart

Port Hopetoun before it was filled in.

The bridge which now crosses the canal at Gilmore Park can be seen it's it's original location at Fountainbridge.

There's not a lot of menfolk there. It looks mostly women/girls and a few boys. Mind you times were tougher in the olden days...

Big thanks for this one. I sent it to my mum and she thinks that is her gran at the window of her first floor flat to the left, where she grew up as a child.

The White Hart Inn in just out of the picture on the left.

Some of the tenement behind the fire no longer there, replaced by “Thomson’s Court” building. The part of it to the right of the close (Thomson’s Close) is still there.
