Cade
What are the EU going to do? Grant all UK banks the passports they need to operate in the EU without anything in return? What will probably happen is that the clearing houses and derivatives operations will move to Frankfurt. The main reason that the City of London was doing all this stuff was because it formed a bridge between EU and USA and both parties were doing their banking here. Now that the UK has no deal with the USA and a Hard Brexit deal with the EU, that convenient buffer no longer exists.
Cade
Direct shipping between Ireland and the EU is up 52% in the last year. Dublin to Holyhead and Liverpool is down 19%. Rosslare to Pembroke and Fishguard is down 30%. They're just going around the UK rather than deal with the new Hard Brexit red tape. Hauliers in Northern Ireland are no longer shipping goods to Ireland to use the short Dublin/Holyhead route to reach markets in the Home Counties of south-east England. They're shipping directly to the UK mainland through the three ports in Northern Ireland. Belfast is up 15% in volume of goods shipped. Larne 18% and Warrenpoint 20%. For example, if Brexit was going to be so wonderful for Nissan, why did they decide to close down their Barcelona plant at the 11th hour instead of Sunderland? How much money did the government secretly pledge to Nissan shortly after the referendum vote was known? Why was it kept secret? Add to the mix the critical nature of Nissans electric cars and need for batteries, the U.K. government adds to the taxpayer burden by granting Nissan yet another £150 million of our cash for the Nissan battery plant. So Brexit is a “success” for Nissan in many ways because we are paying them hundreds of millions to stay here. Contrast that with the other car manufacturers who got nowt like Honda at Swindon - closed down. And as Renault own almost half of Nissan, who are partially owned by the French government, the U.K. government is subsiding the French government, just as we are doing by chucking millions of Pounds to them for ‘managing’ the Channel for us! So much winning.

It’s unclear though whether this decision/investment would have been equally possible without Brexit? So positive in the sense Brexit may be slightly less of a shitstorm as feared but not really positive in the sense that Brexit enabled this investment? 🤷🏻♂️

Don Dan
Let’s no let the fallout of Brexit slip under the radar! Whatever happened to the special relationship? It doesn’t seem to be worth as much these days. Not since we left the EU. The international trade secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan has finished three days of talks in Washington without any sign of a transatlantic trade pact – or any success getting the Biden administration to drop Trump-era tariffs on steel. Trevelyan has plenty of work to do on other post-Brexit deals. The government is well short of its target to have 80 per cent of UK trade covered by free trade agreements, according to a National Audit Office report – which warned against negotiators getting “stretched too thin” in the rush to achieve more accords in 2022. Speaking of 2022, small businesses have been told to get ready for new customs checks coming into force on 1 January, amid growing fears of further supply chain chaos in the new year. Delays to cross-Channel trade are still worsening almost a year after Brexit checks came in, says a study also highlighting rising costs and key staff shunning the UK. No less than 79 per cent of firms trading with France reported hold-ups in the three months to September – crucially, 6 per cent more than in the second quarter of the year. The delays are also lengthening, with 42 per cent of businesses taking an additional two to three weeks to import goods compared to 28 per cent in the April-June period. Some 82 per cent of firms say logistic costs have risen for imports and 43 per cent for exports, the survey by the French Chamber of Great Britain found. And 30 per cent cut staff “directly as a result of Brexit” – some reporting problems in “attracting European talent to the UK”, following the divorce from the EU. Boris Johnson claimed they were just “teething problems” when traders hit trouble at the start of 2021, but the French Chamber has warned of “potentially serious supply chain issues” that threaten Christmas deliveries. Don Dan
https://apple.news/Aeg0zMASZTti4-21_Beb6hQ LONDON (Reuters) - Britain’s trade performance is lagging increasingly behind that of other similar economies, according to data that suggest Brexit has had a detrimental effect on exports, on top of the COVID-19 pandemic. Britain is the only Group of Seven advanced economy to have failed to regain the level of goods exports seen in late 2018, according to official data published by each country, including British data on Friday. Ulysses
And in other news, reports are emerging that the UK is shifting position significantly on the issue of the role of the European Court of Justice in governance of disputes relating to the NI Protocol, while emphasising the need to deal with practical issues (which according to NI business representatives have already been completely addressed in EU proposals). However, David Frost still referred to the ECJ in a comment today.
