Just bought this, thought it was a nice wee watch for the money and like the discreet Hearts badge.

Over the christmas period she was looking at getting me a watch but we couldn't find any that took my fancy as I only like those style of straps. Any of you got any nice watches with the material strap?

I've got a nato strap on an old Citizen. My others have leather, rubber or plastic. Not a fan of a metal bracelet unless it's very retro.

A wee bit of help needed.

I've had an old Tag in the drawer for about a year , I got a battery put in yesterday but a couple of the dials won't reset -  I wouldn't have thought it would be the battery but I only put a £4.99 battery in instead of paying £40 the last time after putting it in the shop to get done - do you think the cheap battery would be the issue  ?

It's quite common for the subdials on chronographs to go out of sync. There is normally a combination of pusher pushes that will recalibrate them. Google will be your friend.

This,  but try searching with the movement number rather than generally by TAG Heuer chronograph or even the model number.     The number should be on the movement.     Good chance it's a fairly standard ESA calibre.

Have a look at the battery make and number and buy one on the Internet.    You can cross reference the numbers on the Internet to one of the best makes.    Renata is probably the best.

Assuming it's a quartz movement and not a tuning fork movement.    Tuning fork (pre quartz circa 1960s and early 70s) require specialist batteries.

If you're concerned about doing it or din't have the right caseback tool then just go to a jeweller.     There's one in Gorgie Road near the Gorgie entrance to Tynie I think,   if they're still in business.     Beaverbrooks or Laings.    What's wrong with Laings?

They wanted about £60 to replace the battery.  That was a good few years ago they say they send them back to Switzerland to get  done .

Fair enough.   Seems daft and too expensive.     May involve a proper reseal if it's got a screw on back like a diver.    Seamaster,  etc.

Sadly not that expensive, I got sick of the cost of battery replacements in an old Tag-Heuer F1 I use as a tool watch so just went to Timpson's about 3 years ago and it was £35.

Just got myself a Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic as New Years gift to myself. Its the 40mm black face model with the ETA 2824-2 movement. Got it for a really good price pre-owned in perfect condition with not a mark on it, even the clasp is perfect. Very impressed at the quality and finish for a watch that can be picked up new for around £500, it looks like a watch costing twice that.

Very nice. I've had a Hamilton with a modified ETA movement for just over 4 years now and it keeps time within COSC parameters. Its been back to Swatch for a warranty repair and then again for something else (which pissed me off) but it's generally been really good. I thought the strap on mine was crap though so I replaced it.

Well in the 18 hours since I set the time it hasn't lost or gained a second so as you say well within COSC.

Winski's on Bruce Street in Dunfermline. Have been taking my watches there for years for servicing/repairs/quartz battery changes etc. They done my son's Omega Seamaster for a very reasonable price including proper reseal.

Captain Sausage

Currently undecided between the Breitling Superocean 44 II and the Rolex no date Submariner.

Would love a Pepsi GMT but it’s out of my price range.

I can can afford the Breitling today, but the Rolex would need me to save up for 2-3 years.

Thoughts? Idea is to pass it down to my son (currently 2) when he is 21, so I’m leaning towards waiting until I can get the Rolex...

I’ve just bought one (series 3). Is it possible to receive WhatsApp notifications on it?

I'd wait and get what you really want.

Have you seen a Tudor Black bay?  Might quench your thirst as they do a Pepsi version.

I once had a no date Sub 2 liner.    There's really nothing quite as classy as a no date Sub.    A Breitling Superocean is not even on the same planet.     It's likely to be powered by a Breitling tweaked ETA2824-2 which is about a hundred pound movement.      A Rolex Sub is well worth waiting for.

Ooft. Looks like I now have the watch I want. That Black Bay Pepsi is a thing of beauty.

Thanks for for the advice CW and @Victorian, I’ll nip into a dealer at the weekend and see if I can try on the Tudor.

I guess I can pick one up, keep saving and swap out in a few years if I still fancy it..

The Tudors are real belters. I fancy one of them as well. Probably a darker version. Sure you probably know but they are part of the Rolex group.

Make sure you get a discount. If not I'd shop around.

Anyone know where I can get my Tag polished up? I took it to Laings but they said they can only do the strap not the bevel and it would have to be posted off to Tag Heuer for a quote which seems a real hassle and likely to cost a fortune.

I associate them with pens. If I was spending that much coin I'd probably choose an established watch maker.

I can vouch for Tudor watches.     I had the heritage chronograph 'Monte Carlo'.     Tremendous quality watches.

Take a look at the North Flag and Fastrider models as well.     North Flag on steel bracelet is a standout.

Anyone any experience Mont Blanc as a watch brand?

They seem a bit overpriced for what they are.      Not really rated in any way beside any others at the price point.

Not sure but I know where to take mine for a polish... nowhere.    It's a black pvd on titanium.   :)

I think they're a go to if you want a pen. Lots of options from proper watch makers at their price points instead though.

I always thought the North Flag was better looking on leather. I almost bought one but something held me back from it. Whilst I like the yellow I think it could become too much.

I think I'd like it better without the date window and power reserve.

The waiting list for a no date Sub is about 2-3 years minimum in the 2 Edinburgh stores apparently so you have plenty of time to save.

I pre-ordered and bought my Breitling at Watches of Switzerland in the duty free at Heathrow and saved over £800. I was on my way to Singapore. I then found out I could have saved more twice as much by buying at WOS in Singapore ?

I did later buy a dual time TAG at WOS in Singapore and saved around 40% on the UK high street price. So if you are looking for a high end Swiss watch, it is worth thinking about an overseas trip to buy it. Best case you will save a bucket load, worst case you will get a free holiday.

I really like the Tudor Black Bay 58 on the fabric strap. How easy are such watches to come by? Is there normally a fair bit of waiting time?

You’re better to buy it on the bracelet and then put the NATO strap on afterwards as it increases the resale value. A good quality NATO is only about £20.

This watch thing is pissing me off. There's always a "need" or a "want" for something else. Madly (possibly) I've really enjoyed wearing a G-Shock that I bought recently and it makes me question why I want the watches that I want.

Does anyone have their grail watch? Did it kill the thirst for more? I've started to feel like if I bought myself a Rolex Explorer (I) then I'd be happy to roll on as a 3 watch guy for many years to come. Is this even feasible? I've strongly considered an Omega AT recently and dabbled with the thought of an Oyster Perpetual but I don't think either would shift the itch. The Explorer just seems like the perfect watch, although I'm not sure that such a thing exists to a watch junkie.

Ive always wanted a grand Seiko or an Omega Seamaster but I've currently got a Seiko dive watch with with pepsi bezel which had really made me question why I want a more expensive watch. I love it, waterproof, time accurate and aesthetically pleasing.  But secretly I still long for the Seamaster.

It helps that I spent my watch money on q motorcycle and realised that's a LOT more fun but that ache for a nice watch never subsides

I spent the best part of £2k on a watch in November and I started hankering again in February. Grand Seiko's are fantastic, they do some amazing dials and certainly aren't 2nd best to the Swiss with movements. I'm a proper knob though and if I got one it would need to be a hi beat. Too expensive I think, even against an Explorer.
