The difficult 15th proves...well..... difficult !!

Andy gets a bogey but its enough to win the hole and the match 4&3.

Thanks to PJ1 for the game, some good golf and good scoring.

Cheers.

Andy finally won the match 4 & 3.

As Andy said i have no idea what both overall scores were but we both must have been under par (although I may have drifted back to about par(ish) with a horror show at the 15th.

Well played Andy.

Time to test out Oakmont now I suppose for the next tournament.

Oakmont is a real bitch of a course PJ, not just getting to the greens but the actual greens themselves, there's gonna be a lot of missed putts on this comp!

Well done to all for making it into the last four - and congratulations to Boof for a good win on a difficult course.

Oakmont may prove a tougher challenge though - it's got almost everything Bethpage has, but with the addition of horribly undulating greens throughout. Could prove even more of a challenge.

Still FIVE places left.....

Currently playing PJ1 at matchplay round Oakmont and I was 3 up early doors, but come the turn it was all square with the greens proving a total nightmare!

PJ1 has just asked me if steamrollers haven't been invented in the Oakmont part of the world

Just playing my first round at Oakmont, wondered what all the fuss was about.

1st hole

Good drive - check

Shot to green - A little too much power, ok though

38 foot putt - to 2 foot, happy with that.

2 foot putt - Is now 1.5 foot past the hole

1.5 foot putt - now 1.3 foot the other side of the hole again

and the 1.3 foot putt. Goes in the hole

The green on the 3rd was bad enough, landed on the fringe. Hit my putt for 60 foot and it went 15

+5 and now on the tee for the 4th

Holy crap i got a birdie

Just went round in matchplay with John, and the best words to describe it are fecking brutal. I think the greens were designed by some psychopathic loonytune who had never ventured out of his village in the Alps.

Ended up 2 up in my favour, but this tournament is going to be something different.

Got par on the 9th after landing in the bunker. The 1 foot putt didn't trouble me too much. Is it bad if it's a long putt?

You played well in the end mate, I started off on fire and then fizzled out to a damp squib, whereas you got stronger as the round went on and sunk some cracking putts (somehow!)

Those greens are incredible though and there wont be many (if any) under par rounds, eek!

Just matchplayed Oakmont with Boof and took a 4 and 3 cuffing. Well done Sir....

Psycho greens - think Boof birdied a couple, but basically it was bogeys almost all the way round.

This competition is going to be brutal.

Anyone else want to sign up for it? :whistling:

If no-one else signs up for Oakmont, any ideas as to how to run the first round without offering a bye to FIVE players?

How about 5 games, with 1 player (player x) not playing at this stage.

5 winners go through to the 1/4 finals.

3 addition qualifying games can now be played. The previous 5 Losers + Player x.

3 winners go through and join the initial 5 winners to the 1/4 finals. (5+3)

I think that would work.

Very good shout, thanks Mark. That's what we'll do if no-one else signs up before 11pm this evening.

I wouldn't want to be 'player x' though - one chance of making it to the QF when everyone else has two. :(

If your putt is longer than 5 feet then you're in bother mate, it makes Bethpage look like a pitch n putt course :D

Good call, have been thinking about something like that.

Which system would be better - 3 points for a win, and maybe 1 point for losers if the game goes into extra holes?

Or winners picking up points based on the number of holes they win by - f.e. winning 6 and 5, the winner would pick up 6 points?

Or 3 points for a win, and 6 as in 6&5 as a goal difference sort of thing?

And a point for the loser if it goes past 18 holes

With only 13 players signed up for the competition, the first round will proceed as follows....

Six ties will be randomly drawn, with the six winning players reaching the quarterfinals.

One player will receive an automatic bye into the quarterfinal.

Two top-scoring loser amongst the six played ties will gain the remaining quarterfinal place - i.e. someone who lost their tie only 1 down will take precedence over a player who lost 2 and 1. Should there be two players in the same position, they'll be asked to play off against each other for the remaining quarterfinal spot. Should there be three (or more) players in the same position, I'll - erm... have to think about it.

Draw coming up shortly.....

That's made me feel a little better. Just went round Oakmont playing fast greens with a moderate wind, and completed it in 69 shots (-1). Now when it comes to playing my match I just have to try and remember exactly what I done and where I put the ball at each hole (especially the greens).
