Alright lets start a list great cover songs that out do or equal the original. 3 each, i'll start.

Metallica - Whiskey in the jar (Thin Lizzy/Trad.) As much as i dislike Metallica and find them so boring they do this song proud. Upbeat and rocking.

The Futureheads - Hounds of Love (Kate Bush) Excellent vocal harmonies to rival kates 'mental' vocal pattern.

Pearl Jam - Rockin' in the free world (Niel Young) as much as i love NY his later rocky stuff alway just missed the mark PJ do an awsome job. their version of his song ****in up also deserves a nod.

go on, fill yer boots.

Aye, just about all of the American Recordings covers bettered the originals -

Beck's Rowaboat

Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down

Bonnie Prince Billy's I See a Darkness (although the original of this is every bit as good).

Leonard Cohen's Bird on a Wire from the Unearthed box.

Brilliant stuff.

DH has already mentioned John Cale, but no harm in offering another...

his version of 'Heartbreak Hotel' far surpasses Presley's insipid original.

Also Cristina's dry and cynical rendering of 'Is That All There Is?' beats Peggy Lee hands down.

Metallica's Whiskey in the Jar is one of my all time favourite songs - and my main ringtone.

Another favourite cover of mine is Whiter Shade of Pale played by Zakk Wylde. Not his usual, but just an awesome cover.

As is Tool's cover of No Quarter.

Marilyn Mansons cover of Annie Lennox's 'Sweet dreams'

Give me a break. This and his cover of Tainted Love are two of the worst cover versions around. Completely missed the point on both occasions.

To contribute

Johnny Cash - Hurt

Cake - I Will Survive

The Shins - We Will Become Silhouettes

Bright Eyes - Mushaboom

I P Knightley

Someone mentioned Oasis - I don't mind their version of Bowie's Heroes although the original is better

Frankie Miller's 'Caledonia' is a good interpretation of the original.

John Cale's Hallelujah could be joined by Jeff Buckley's version in the 'really quite good' section. Almost any cover of a Cohen song would be worth listening to. Jennifer Warnes did an album of Cohen covers - most were excellent.

Similarly Elton John songs. I can't stand his voice so it's only when I hear a cover version that I realise what good songs he wrote. I got The Who performing "Saturday Night's Alright (for fighting)" and it's not half bad. Same goes for Joe Cocker performing "Sorry seems to be the hardest word" and George Michael doing "Don't Let the Sun go Down on me" and "Tonight".

Sinead O'Conner & Nothing compares 2U is pretty handy.

Thrice's cover of 'Send Me an Angel' by Real Life is quite good.

As is New Found Glory's version of 'Kiss Me'. Infact their whole cover album 'From the Screen to Your Stereo 2' is awesome.

Finally The Used and My Chemical Romance joined together to cover 'Under Pressure'.

Oh and also a mention for the Prodigy song 'Firestarter' covered by Jimmy Eat World. It's probably better than any of the above three but I couldn't find it on youtube :(
