I was at the game with my old man. I was thirteen at the time, and we were standing in our usual place at the barrier on the raised terracing between the two entrances off Gorgie Road if anyone remembers that.

The way older relatives spoke of him was quite something. A real shame we don’t have the sheer depth of video archive we do for today's stars.

My pal and I met him at Boroughmuir rugby club (mid to late 70's l think). We blethered to him for about an hour about Hearts and football in general. As he was leaving, his wife came up to us and said that was the first time in years that he had spoken to anyone outwith his family about his time at Hearts. She then showed us his 1956 cup winners medal which she wore as a pendant. Two very proud 18/19 year olds.

Yip, in years to come there will as many videos of Messi / Ronaldo etc as anyone wants, but sadly we don't have that for the stars of the past

Great story.  My only

memory of him was my dad taking me to his shop in the late 60s before a match to buy something just so he could point him out.

My dad too. He insisted I called Willie Sir.

Sounds just like me.  My dad and I stood there.  I, too, was thirteen.  Regarding the thread on Donald Ford and him only being booked once, am I right in thinking that Willie Bauld was also only booked once, in a 4 - 1 win against Airdrie when he threw his arms down in a gesture of frustration at the referee and got booked for it. He slso scored the opening goal, 20 seconds after kickoff without an Airdrie player having touched the ball.  Sorry for going off topic (nostalgia does that).

When he passed away in 1977 the club released a programme celebrating his life. I handed my one in to the club museum.

1st game my dad took me to was Hearts 8 Third Lanark 3. Sitting on the wall at the halfway line with my legs over on to the track. Willie Bauld scored 5 goals that day, my 1st Hearts hero.

You always remember your 1st hero.

I remember going into his shop pre game for a quarter pound of sweets. Back in the 70s in the days of low attendances and meeting the old guys in the Diggers who had stopped going to the games singing Willie Baulds the King of Scotland and showing us how he headed a ball. It was all in the neck muscles apparently 😊

I was also at his testimonial, I've got two 'all time' heroes.

The 'King', and the original  'Mr Hearts.' John Cumming.

I also used to go into his shop, I remember he spoke to me once, and I couldn't answer him, I was too in awe of him !

I've said it before , and I'll say it again, we'll never see their likes again.

Yes, I love that picture.  Thank you.

I had a framed copy of it on the wall in our hall when I lived in Edinburgh.  We’re heading back home soon and the picture will be used again!

I'm sure Sir Alex Ferguson mentioned Willie's heading power in an interview and said he could header a ball better than Ronaldo.

I think he said he was the best header of a ball he ever saw and that Hearts were pretty much his second team but I could be wrong.

He had a soft spot for hearts and saw us win a couple of cup finals in the 50s/60s at Hampden

I think quite a few of us whose dad's had seen him play were taken to his shop to meet the great man. My dad took me along a few times and I have a vague memory of meeting Willie and shaking his hand. I have to say that for all my dad's reverence of Willie his biggest hero was Dave Mackay.

I was told Club deducted the cost of the match ball from Willie which really pissed him off and he never returned to Tynecastle.

Willie "bought" me a pint at the private do in Eric Browns in Dalry Road the night before it opened to the public (Willie's son married Eric's daughter). I've met a few sporting heroes in my time (Henry Cooper, George Best, Stephen Hendry and others) but nothing compares with meeting the King.

He did return.  He was invited to Hearts v Killie Cup game in 1975. Midweek match, we won 2-0 with Busby scoring both with strong headers, which Willie would have approved of.

I think Fergie gave a eulogy at Dave Mackay's funeral, telling the attendees that they were in the presence of greatness.

My old man was a great fan of Davie Mackay too but when it came to the crunch he always said, "There's only one king of hearts.....and that's Willie Bauld."

Alfie Conn played for Gala Fairydean after leaving Hearts

Tommy Walker was manager AND secretary of the club

He was alleged to be able to defy gravity, ie he seemed to be hanging stationary and unsupported in the air when the ball arrived. Dennis Law was described as having the same ability, of course, it was just perfect timing.
