No Idle Talk

Never knew any. Met Paul Kane and Mickey Weir at an Emlyn Hughes soccer day at Meadowbank Stadium when I was wee. Paul Kane was a knob.

Totally agree. I used to DJ and do the pub quiz for Jimmy when he had the Corstorphine Inn. Brilliant guy....and a top top player in his day.

I used to live next to Nick Colgan and socialised with him and his wife a fair bit.  Really good lad and his wife was fit.  He was very good mates with Antti Niemi and had huge respect for him.

I once met Mickey Weir in biddy mulligans and he was a good lad and happy to chat.

Ive met John Collins several times, he is the pricks prick.

Derek Riordan tried to pick a fight with me in a bar next to the omni centre when he saw my Hearts tattoo.  He wasn’t so game when I asked him outside 😅

Pat Stanton. Hated him after he scored a late equaliser back in the 70s but he later ran my works local and was really sound.

Not a player but Grant Stott is ok. He went to school with a workmate of mine and he takes banter well, as well as dishing it out.

Cant think of any player I have met that I thought was a decent lad.

Heard a few accounts that despite being a player you love to hate, off the park, Scott Brown is a top lad.

George Stewart was a good guy back in the day. Pat Stanton was a great player and a gentleman … Jimmy ORourke was sound.   I think a lot of them from 70s  were ok tbh even although they regularly beat us.

Interesting what he said recently about why he shaved his head as a player (to look like a thug) and now he’s growing his hair like normal.

Used to see Goram and Mickey Weir in Busters on occasions. Sat there like a ventriloquist with his dummy. Never spoke to either, probably sound IRL.

Agreed.

I’ve seen him ‘in action’ twice.

Weird, sleepy creep isn’t strong enough.

Only footballer I ever spent any time with, my mate's dad's friend, where we would often go out for a meal after home games, was Johnny Haynes.  I was about 12/13 so never really appreciated his stature as a player in the game at the time. Absolute gent, however, that was very apparent.

Me and my mates ( all Jambos ) were in a pub in Rose St last year and Riordan was in with a couple of his mates. He came over and blethered with us most of the afternoon. We spoke about the Rudi game and singing incident. Basically said he was a daft laddie and wished he hadn’t done it.  We actually all had a good afternoon and my mates and I all agreed that we were surprised he was actually a decent lad 🤷🏼‍♂️

tbf can't be easy being out on the Ran and being famous, no doubt you'd let it slip occasionally. Maybe he was a bit of a dick, dunno really.

Met Goram at a party once when I was a lot younger.  A total bellend of a man.

John Hughes was a nice guy in person, chatted football for ages.  The rest of them are all bitter welts.

Jim McArthur was training to be a PE Teacher when part time with Cowdenbeath but went full time with Hibs.  Our school's Staff v Pupils game saw Jim (plus a couple more ringers) playing for the staff team.  Due to the weather we had to use a hockey pitch with their small goals but I enjoyed putting three past him 😁.  I saw him a few times after that and he always took the slagging well!

Lawrie Reilly always came to the Willie Bauld Dinner and all players of that era were quite pally together. I guess they weren't paid much, compared to nowadays.......

Jimmy O'Rourke was a great guy, unlucky to never play for Scotland. Despite singing about "Send the Hibees to Vietnam" I quite liked Peter Cormack and the one time I met him he was quite quiet and unassuming for a Scottish International.

Tried to pick a fight with me in the taxi too. Was all nice and friendly chat and then someone flicked the switch.

He was on the same flight as me about 10 years ago, his creepy attempts to flirt with the stewardess failed miserably, she was about 20 and was completely oblivious to who he was!

Similar experience. My brother is a spark and done some work for Hughes . Ended up meeting my bro in The Ferret and Bootlace which John owned. Quite an entertaining guy, good laugh and loves the game.

Not a bona fide Hibby as such but once met Pat Nevin. Stood and gabbed a good 10-15 minutes about football. Really nice fella.

To be fair his girlfriend probably wasn't accustomed to seeing a man giving it large.

Only ever met him through the laddies football. He's presented medals and such like and couldnt have been nicer posing for dozens and dozens of pictures, signing autographs, getting ripped by the laddies and spending time with them all afterward

Can’t say I have met that many.  If my memory serves me correct though, Gareth Evans used to own/run the West End Hotel in Palmerston Place.  I used to go there with my mates in the 90s.  He was happy for us to spend our cash, but as soon as we won a couple of jackpots in the fruit machines one night, he chucked us out.  The jackpot wasn’t even that big in those days.

There's very few Hibs players I've loathed as very few have done Hearts any harm since my mid-teens (1983 on). 😊

Erich Schaedler, the personality for the evening, came up from his pub to crack open the charity bottle in Dizzy Lizzy's in late 1984. He cut his hand quite badly but stayed for a while and was a sound bloke.

I got a wee dig in about his part in Robbo's equaliser the year before and he took it in great stead.

Nice man.

PS:

I was still only 16 at the time but I was already a Dizzy's regular. 😄

I'm sure I bumped into McGinn & Boyle in Storries not long after their cup win. TBH both seemed like decent guys :D

Remember being a bit surprised at how small Boyle is

Alex Cropley.

He was sound and had no love for Hibs. Drank in his pub for years. Despite it being a Drybrough pub, he used to sell pint bottles of Tennents on the sly as it was pretty shitty lager on draught (even shittier than Tennents). Obviously, he ended up getting caught out by the brewery and as a few Hibbies drank in the place he had the Hibs song on the jukey. Anyway, on his last night, he swapped the Hibs song for the Hearts song (45 vinyl discs back then). Cue around 8.00 and one of the Hibs guys puts the Hibs song on the jukey and seconds later Away up in Gorge is blasting out. Cropley was pissing himself.
