It's that time of year again when part time horse punters go nuts!

Admittedly not up to speed with this year's festival so got a bit of research to do prior to tomorrow. My bookie account is looking good though and so it'll be all bookies money I play with this year. Is it just me or does it all feel very flat in the build up?

I'm up for spending a wee bit of budget this week.  Won't go overboard.

Most of the big name bookies giving out freebies for incentives.  William Hill are giving £5 each day as free-bet.

I'm purely 365 these days, more out of laziness though. They aren't usually the best with offers and don't see any on their app yet. They do usually come up with something though.

I'm on call this week but managed to sort working from home so hopefully I'm quiet and can see all races. Hand over on call midday Friday so can enjoy the gold Cup day with a beer or two!

Will take advantage of Sky Bets daily money back offer, but every year I’m reminded that horse racing is nearly impossible to bet on as a complete casual like myself 😂

Feels like you have to do a 5 year apprenticeship before you’re even half decent at picking a horse!

The Bet365 super boost is State Man.  4/11 boosted to Evens.  Rude not to.

Ground looks heavy as hell in places. Standing water. Still thrashing it down too.

Not great news for Lossiemouth or Corbetts Cross who are short in their respective races.

Watch out for Eagle Fang!

Being the cynic I am that tells me that Bet365 may know something we don't, and State Man is not going to win. Having said that it's still my choice for the race.

Probably just trying to pull punters in. It should win comfortably tbf.

Can't stick it on multiples which sucks!

Apparently Mullins has a particularly good strike rate in testing ground.  Il Etait Temps is being battered in the 2nd.  Rude not to.

I read a book about 20 years ago written by Kevin Booth who owned the Isiris tipping service. His strategy was to identify favourites that for whatever reason, couldn't win a particular race and to oppose that horse. Quite often he got his info from the relationships between certain stables and certain large bookmakers. He identified which stables had relationships with which bookmakers in his book.

The info is now 20 years out of date and I have no idea if Bet365 has strong ties to the Willie Mullins stable but given that bookmakers hate favourites winning it seems strange behaviour to try to pull punters in in this way on a horse which other bookies have at around 4/9. I agree it should win comfortably but this seems a bit suspicious to me.

It's not just one horse though for them though, it's the bigger picture. The punters they pull on on this offer stick money on other races and become either returning lapsed 365 customers or new ones. Risk, reward.

I've not put the bet on as I'm limited to £15 on it and don't see the point.

What I will say is that it is healthy to have cynicism towards anything a bookie does!

I can see her being festival champion jockey again. Probably between her and Paul Townend. Nicky Henderson seems to be having problems just now which doesn’t bode well for Nico de Boinville.

Bit of phree munney from the super boost on State Man.  Covers the inability of one to pick anything else.

Didn't even have to get out of second gear really.

Have Marie's Rock in this one coming but I've also Love Envoi in a place bet.

Meh day so far. Had that one winner which will see me evens on my singles.

Had a place bet which lost but need embassy gardens to win the last for a treble to win for a great end to the day.

Slept through most of that. Doesn't seem like it was the most exciting day of racing.

Another 3 odds-on favourites for Willie Mullins tomorrow,  as well as the usual multiple runners,  including just the 9 entrants in the 5.30.

Almost but not quite. Had 7 out of 7 in ITV7 competition but tie breaker was distance in Lossiemouth's race and I had 2.25 lengths and correct distance 3 lengths.

£100k prize gone but I'll try again tomorrow.

I think 22 people shared the prize. There were hundreds with all 7.

Wow, you were one of the 305! Brilliant result that. Pity about the tie-breaker. I only had 3 winners today one of which was at Sedgefield.

Yep, didn't see race live but when I saw the replay, could see it wasn't my distance.

£200k prize tomorrow though so you never know.

Imaginative patent bet tomorrow.

2.50  Ballyadam 11/1

4.10  Foxy Jacks 14/1

4.50  Hardy Du Seuil 10/1

It's got a heroic effort winner + 2 x 2nds = virtually no profit vibe about it.

Man, that is unlucky. At least they use the tiebreaker. The amount of folk thinking they’ve won £5/10k on bet365 football scores and buying holidays before they realise it’s a pool is unreal!

Day 2:

So many straight up favourites with rubbish odds. Can’t work out any strategy today albeit betting without.

Yeah not the best day for racing tbh. Cross Country has been pulled. Very small bets for me today just to retain interest.

My picks for today (bets are where I've put Win / EW)

1.45 Jingko Blue

2.30 Monty's Star w/o Fact to File

3.15 Built by Ballymore (EW)

4.00 Captain Guiness (EW)

4.50 Gerimande (EW)

5.30 Cantico (EW)

Did the following treble

Fact to File to win

Built by Ballymore to place

Captain Guinness to place

Oh for the good old days when there was huge fields for almost every race. Not even sure I’m going to watch day 2😞

Yeah it's a bit shit and almost completely reliant on a few stables.  Mullins,  Elliot,  De Bromhead,  Henderson.
